How do 20 years old get insured on cars over grp13?
#1
My younger bro is looking to change his car and is considering a 106 gti or punto gt, the 106 is approx £1100 to insure but the punto is £1600. (both TPFT)
Hes got 2 years no claims bonus its so hard to get a decent hot hatch for around £4000 and sensible insurance.
I dont think the punto is worth paying out all that insurance when the cars is only worth £3500!

get a 106. in 12 months time the pug will probably be worth twice as much as the punto.
there's a few nice fiats going about but I personally wouldn't waste money on one - they're a depreciation disaster IMHO.

Age Car Insurance NCB Car Value
26 ATR 1300 FC 2 14.5k
25 323F 675 TPFT 1 2.5k
24 323F 1200 TPFT 0 4.5k
23 Xr3i 1200 TPFT 0 500quid
I think that you can see that driving a piece of crap and earning your NCB is worth it, You put the money for insurance and modding etc in an account and drive something sensible till you are in your early 20's and then get something good.
The Porsche 964 is sure going to be good next year, either that or a 8 yr old NSX!!

actually Punto GTs are quite good when it comes to depreciation.
over the last 3 years, mines lost about 1000 pounds of its sale price- parkers / glass' guide is nowhere near what they actually sell for.
rare enough- only 2000 on the road in the UK, and that means they hold a premium.
dont handle as good as a 106, granted, but if you like forced induction, then thy're a blast- and easily tweaked +30bhp over std to 160-70bhp for under 750 quid.
can get % discount through punto owners club for insurance, or try some specialist ppl, like greenlight.
sure its prob same for 106 aswell...

Mozza,
Has he considered a 106 Quicksilver? Not quite in GTI territory, but a mate of mine has just bought one. She is 19 and has it fully comp for just under £800, with 1 years NCB. A 106 GTI was the thick end of £1.5k. There's not much in it, especially in looks. Worth considering IMHO.

I put up with years of driving 900cc Polos and 1300cc Fiestas before I could afford insurance on anything decent.
You really need to be 25+ and have 5+ years NCB before considering anything remotely quick or powerful.

Tell him to look on www.confused.com
I was insured with ATS (0870 6000 080) for 3 years with my XR2i and then my Golf GTI 16v. Both cars were reasonable to insure. I got my XR2i when I was 20. Make sure he gets a Cat1 alarm as that made a difference with me. My XR2i was £700 or something, and the renewal for my Golf GTI this year (24 now with 5 years NCB) was £450..... went with Admiral though as they were slightly better.

thanx for all the replys, Sorry but a mate had a quick silver and it looks similar to a 106 gti but it sure doent go like one!
Ive played the insurance game for years now, im 25 and got full no claims but these days the insuarnce for young driver is a nightmare!
He doesnt want an old car otherwise the insuarnce wouldnt hit him as hard as the car would be worth very little.
One thing ive got to say about the 106 v Punto is that the 106 is a tiny car, very little leg room and has got an uncomfortable driving position with offset pedals...... shame!

I'm just 19, and have an '01 Saxo VTS, which is group 14.
Had it when I was 18, car is insured for 7k, no NCB, one no fault accident, medium risk post code and car kept in garage, £2000 fully comp.
www.elephant.co.uk were the only company to quote under £3500.

At 18 i was insured on a Renault5 GT Turbo no probs, Grp14.
At 20 i was insured on a 3door Sierra RS Cosworth and thas about as harsh on the insurance as you can get (Grp20).
I seem to be better on the phone at getting quotes than most people tho, lot better

My brother has owned both the GT and the GTI he is a nutcase and managed to blow up both cars
Both were caused by over revving according to the garages he went too... (I thought that’s why cars had limiters)
IMHO the 106 gti is by far the best judging on fun and style the punto is just not a good car fine for A to B but that’s it.
There are not many cars with good insurance for his age what about a Civic VTI or CRX VTEC both really good cars and should be cheaper than the Punto

Just do what i did ring round everyone single insurance company. I was 19 and driving a group 20 car ( cosworth ) it took about 3 days to get a quote down to under 2 grand but was worth it. Got it down to £1500 that was with no no claims either.
I somehow pay more now on my scoob and im 23 worrk that out

At the risk of getting flamed how about a Rover 200vi or a 25 GTi - both good cars, quick, good hot hatch handling, probably cheaper to insure due to pipe & slippers image.
200vi is a great "sleeper" too, looks totally standard apart from the wheels & badge.
