Yes it has auto mode, and a sport mode which mucks around with the vanos (iirc) and you get even more poke,
Traction control can be turned off..
My boss threw the M3 around quite nicely, I think (in the dry) the handlings probaly just as good as a standard scoob.
It didn't feel as fast as my Type R (circa 300bhp).
If you don't have rear passengers and forget to latch down the seat belts they flap around like a flappy thing - really annoying.
Fit,finish, quality, poise way ahead of scoob - you'd rather turn up at Wentworth in one wouldn't ya.
Is it worth twice price of scoob maybe, maybe not

Corradoboy - please DO tell where you get this "3 times" information. It is UTTERLY, UTTERLY wrong. There is no such clause in the warranty documents. People started getting worried because BMW can plug into the car and see how many times you have done this. Still be intersted to know the basis for your information.
-On launch control, when the gear lever is held forward to activate it, there are 2 modes. If you mash the accelerator pedal (before letting go of the leaver to shoot off), then it will do a burn-out. If you gradually press it (i.e. one second to press fully), it does the full (and faster) controlled launch control, where it feathers the clutch
-Exhaust noise - agree its an acquired taste, took me some time to get used to it and like it. It changes dramatically during the first 5k or so miles though, and sounds very different depending on whether when the car is cold/hot. You may change your mind when you hear one at 6k prm plus, its is just awesome, touring car like. Incedentally, I know its personal taste, but the exhaust note is a consistently praised aspect of the car in the reviews.
-Re SMG, the car has 11 driving modes, 5 in auto, 5 in manual, and 1 extra manual mode. To 'unlock' this, DSC must be switched off. This eables the 80 mili second gear changes and the (more then 3) launch controls.
DSC can be turned off, Corner Braking Control can also be switched off be holding the DSC button for 10+ secs.
PS my fave feature is the throttle 'blip' on a SMG downchange!

"the throttle blip thing, i don't think is something to be all that impressed about my friend had a 1.8 A4 standard rep mobile and it did the auto throttle blip it was a P plate 6 yrs old?"
There is a goo dreason for this.... it does not do one. Auto boxes do not do, and do not need to do, a throttle blip (torque convertors). SMG/DSG/F1 boxes are sequential (i.e. they actually use the same gearbox as their manual equivalents).
The blip matches the revs for a smooth downchange

Bliping throttle on down change is actually a very neat feature
In fact, it's for sale for a bargain £7500

the m3 with smg is top of my what car next list after my evo. not had chance to get a test drive yet, but will do soon.
just a couple of questions mate. can the smg be put into plain old auto mode? can traction control be switched off? and apart from the exhaust note (first thing id put on is an ac schnitzer exhaust anyway) what was your overall impression of the car? was there anything that you thought were particularly nice touches about the car?
was the car nimble, or did it feel heavy for example? i test drove an e36 m3 once, it was nice but didnt feel chuckable at all.
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Glad to see that some of you guys aren't afraid to recognise your own limitations...
I for one wouldn't limited myself to any derivation of a 3 series beemer as an aspiration.

With all these gadgets and gizmos no wonder it's so expensive. By the sounds of it all you need is auto steering and you won't even have to be there (thankfully ).
Throttle blip on downshift ... honestly I've heard it all now. Why don't they put a large simulator and speaker system in so it sounds like a BMW F1 V10 as well?
tiggers.

Greg..
Yes
its not quicker than my scoob.. but its standard.. doesn't need the bonnet opening, doesn't need a laptop as a passenger
I didn't drive it.. I was a passenger..
Wouldn't mind a drive of it
felt very controllable sideways..

Bliping throttle on down change is actually a very neat feature
matching the revs for you automaticly should make it smoother to drive quickly - VAGs new DSG does it as well
Luanch control isn't that special - my racelogic traction control has it - don't use it very often because it does hammer the clutch especially with 290 lbs of torque

Guys,
Haven`t been on here for a while but I love the Beemer,
although I don`t rate the (SMG)or the conerta because of the weight, converta`s carry quite a bit more weight than the normal coupe and this can really affect the performance.
If you want a hair raising experiance try the Z3M coupe, it`s an animal wet or dry.
"O" and the other good thing abouot most M power beemers is yes they do depreciate in value but not as much as most cars, so they may be expensive to buy but your not going to lose too much money if you decide to sell it a couple of years down the line.

AND on the note of the exhaust, I don`t rate the sound but have you heard the noise a ferrari modena makes....it sounds like someones shaking up a can of nuts and bolts...but I wouldn`t refuse owning one because of it`s sound........after all most of us are in it for the performance.
