What First Car?
#1
Friend is looking for first car, he's 17 just passed his test.
So it needs to be; Cheap to insure (no bigger than 1.4)
Good Street Cred
Can't be Ford, Vauxhall, Citroen or Peugeot
Needs to be bigger enough (he's 6,3)
Needs to be nippy but not particulary fast
Doesn't want anything bigger than say VW Polo size.
So what we thinks, plus what to look for on cars you recommend to him.
Oh and about £3k to £4k.
Thanks in advance!

nope.
Im 17.
1973 GT6
2ltr
worth £5k
3rd party = 968 unlimited miles inc breakdown cover.
if i quote miles i get discount.
eg 6000 miles = 850£
4500 = 815£
3000 = 720£
Its VERY fast and loud. ~
full comps around 1400 which is still good at 17. And if he get pre 73 its tax free.
hehe on the subject of fast, took it to 4.5 k revs today and left a nova standing.(that was in 3rd starting at 30 mph)

Errrrrr.......that narrows it down to a VW Polo then? Possibly an older Civic? Why is he so against the makes listed above? All of them do perfectly reasonable first cars that are cheap to run, cheap(ish) to insure, reliable and hold their value well. Tell him to bit the bullet and consider a Pug or something. I am just about to sell my first car, which was a 206. Alright, the build isn't the best and it is sluggish, but not a single thing has gone wrong, it looks OK and it has enabled me to get use to the roads in a safe little car and build up some NCB. Can't say fairer than that!

Is he buying new or second hand? What kind of budget does he have?

£4000 tops!
Does not want a FORD full stop!
Vauxhall suppose he would have a Corsa.
Didn't think he could afford a 206 and finds the 106 undrivable because his legs are so long!
Same for Citroen Saxo and will not have Xsara!
Is that really all there is too choose from?

And what about Yaris???
VW Polo, VR Lupo, Seat Ibiza, Seat Arosa, Fiat Punto, Renault Clio, Skoda Fabia, Honda Civic, Nissan Almera, Toyota Corolla. Some of those may be a bit on the small side though...
Any of the above should be available in some form or other for about £4K when bought 3 or 4 years old, and should have a low insurance group. I can't vouch for the quality of some of them!

Not a Ford, Vauxhall, Citroen or Peugeot!
1.4 or less
And street cred, for less than £4k!
I guess they want the moon on a stick as well!!!
If insurance is a problem, you'll find that Fords and Vauxhalls are the cheapest to insure. For some reason similar engines in say a VW are 2-3 insurance groups higher.
For that money, I would personally would go for a Peugeot 106 Rallye. Why?
1.3 engine (in the mark 1's, although they are 1.6 in the mark 2's)
Lightweight (manual windows, no air con, etc)
Rally slag cool!
Can be a little pricey to insure (compared to a Nova or a Fiesta) £2.5k-4k depending on condition, etc.
Steel wheels, so no need to worry about kerbing alloys (it will happen, no matter how good a driver your mate thinks they are)
So it's a Peugeot, but I'm surprised someone can add so many limitations with their first car!

Seat Ibiza - cheap vw polo, with all the build quality etc
1.4 are cheap, and quite nippy. for 4k can get a 3 yrs old virtually new car. Spend a few quid on some nice alloys, and as
a first car, its pretty neat

Think it will be a Polo or maybe a Clio.
He won't have a Ford (can't blame him) he can't afford a 206 and the 106 is tooo small (same for Saxo)
The Corsa maybe ok just loads of *** heads drive them!
Thanks!

he's thinking of the new clio (the 1.2) because he knows people in the trade who has a couple/can get some and will give him a big discount.
Seen a black Polo on 99S 3dr 1.4 CL up at £3900 with 40k - sound good?
