Question

Hi folks...

Been looking for a car to replace partners rover 220d which i find loathesome>>>

not found A4 yet thats taken my fancy...there was a 1.8T sport quattro with 80k on a v reg on trader.

but requirements are 4 door and a generally nice car.

But ive found a R reg VR6 in red 5 door.
its mint!!! been locally owned for last few years.
48k miles
full elecs inc sunroof
full leather
CD
A/C
heated seats
BBS
fully colour coded
FSH

its up for 6995, but will take 6500 with the 50k service done, 12 month warrenty, full mot, and taxed till end of jan 04.

i drove it today...i was surprised just how nice this car was to drive....did 40 miles and the comp was reading 28.5 mpg with combined driving and the odd foot full

it felt very smooth, nicer to drive than my 02 A3 tdi quattro, probably coz engine note was so sweet and quiet.

i fancy it myself....

does it sound dear at 6500??? or should it be 6000?

anyone owned VR6 on here...what sort of miles per tank and average MPG?

i know its a 6 yearold car... but i like it...

any probs to look for??? or would the A4 be better long term bet in terms of depreciation and i suppose the A4 looks more modern??

any views please???

Scoob's have 4 doors you know and they drive quite nice too!

hello, I am just about getting rid of my N reg VR6, £6500 is a good price for the car you describe, I will put mine in for £6300ish and take £6000 its 57K, FSH, dragon green colour coded, 4dr, 10 CD system, 97 spec brakes with CAT1 alarm (makes a big diff on insurance- approx £300)so check with the car u r looking ats alarm. I went for none leather & no aircon, two reasons, the use a lot of petrol (round town I only get about 19-21mpg, u only need aircon about 3 times a yr in this country and its more to go wrong with the car, with the seats, its a huge extra incentive to steal the car if you have leather, as its fits in pretty much all other Mk3 Golfs, plus the replacement cost is approx 9000K if the go. Give me a shout if you need any more data, or if my car is of interest

I have no experience of a MK3 VR6 as a car but i have a VR6 engine in my MK2 and you will find the note of the engine so addictive, especially with induction and exhaust that 28mpg will soon become a distant memory..i would expect about low 20's to be about right.. If you do go for it i am sure you will enjoy it..

Air-con uses no more fuel they having the windows open on the go and it's more comfortable.

Wouldn't have though leather made a car more nickable, but then again if it's worth £9,000,000 I guess it's worth a go (sorry couldn't resist )

Depends if u have a secure garage, I dont, I also live in a Bham suberb not some poncey Home counties address, thanks for the additional sales pitch!

apologies to MattN, my bro spotted my mistake, £9Mill for the seats is a bit excessive- stressing about my ABS light today, turns out its only the sensor, thank ****.

Remember that the A4 T sport quattro you are looking at is quite a rare car - it is a special top of the range special edition that has the 180 bhp engine (rather than the 150 of the fwd 1.8T), unique 10 spoke alloys, grey faced dials and the lowered sports suspension not found on either the fwd 1.8T or any of the other quattro's as standard. If it's a good one then it may prove to be the more satisfying long term prospect but a pup could end up costing you a lorra lorra money.

I had a 5 door Golf Vr6 for 2 years until 6 months ago, when I chopped it in for a Clio Cup.

They're comfy cars, with a superb v6 growl and smooth power delivery. Economy wise, I averaged 28mpg over the 30,000 miles I did in mine; it dipped to 25 over short A road 'blasts', but never got above 31, even on careful 65-70mph long distance motorway runs.

£6500 sounds steep, but then the miles are very low. Mine was a 97 P with 102,000 miles, with another 100,000 in it easily; I sold it for £4250 as a private sale. Dealers will charge the earth for these motors, especially the Highline model you're considering; just beware that they're a nightmare to sell on. If you're going to keep it for a few years, you'll be making a wise investment.

Oh, and they handle like they're on springs made of sponge. The only mod I did to mine was to fit eibach springs for about £300 - improved things no end and dropped it only about 25mm, so it didn't look silly. Oh, and if you've got £2-3000 free, you could always fit a supercharger and get upwards of 220bhp....

Hi Lee, I have been looking for the last few weeks at Autotrader prices on low milage VR6's(under 60K) and they are fluctuating massively - 2 wks ago most decent ones were up for around £6200 to £6300, but this wk there r several Highlines in for less than £5500, which makes your £6500 offer look expensive. I am now completely confused as to what mines worth; anything between £5-6K looks possible????

personally i'd go for a high mileage/low price vr6 providing it had a FSH....less depreciation over the years.... as we all know miles is nothing to a 2.8 V6 engine... there was one on the autotrader a few months ago with 270K!!!!....and still going strong

Yet again conflicting info on milage?? One of my mates is a specialist rally mechanic,(RAC builds/Prodrive & Rallyart contracts etc) he advised that VR6 suffers form sticky valves and regular coilpack failures over 100K. See your point on depreciation, however always much more ancillary problems via wear & tear on a high milage car....

mind u i did hear of them having problems relating to valve stem seals but i think that was only the early ones 92/93...

Had two VR6's in my time and was happy with both. The 2nd one had an alarming rattle tho' which we never did discover the origins of. Nice car ...pity I cannot afford to run such a vehicle now.....

cheers foks for all the reviews and info....

big change of plan.....the garage which is my m8s wont drop at all...he needs to keep on the front longer to realise it aint everyones cuppa....

my other half is changing her mind like the weather.....and i think im chopping mine in for a A4 1.9Tdi sport saloon on an 03.

nice and economical and 4 doors...also could chip lke my tdiq is to 185bhp....

Lee,

you could always convert the VR6 to LPG, get better savings in fual than a TDi and have more useable power.

cheers spen....but the A4 is parked outside....its 03 tdi sport, climate, 6 cd 17's alloys lowered...in amulet red. 3k miles.

makes me drive abit more sudately!!!! hows your mota damien???

me and tim going to catalunya!!!
