You could try Cyprus, as you may find the same van there a lot cheaper and you could drive it back

The current UK Hiace & the Japanese Hiace are different vans.
The current UK Hiace Powervan is based on the Japanese luxury mpv Hiace Reguis/Granvia. The Japanese Hiace van is the same as the old model UK Hiace.

The current UK model came out I think 98/99. The current model in Japan came out in the early 90's.
B4 98/99, UK & Japan shared the same model.

I think the UK version offers bigger loading capacity (& volume) than the Japanese version.
U can always ask ur dealer whether a/c can be fitted to a UK Hiace. I don't see any problems in that respect, as nearly everything nowadays with more than 3 wheels can have a/c.

Used to use these for work.

The current model Hiace came out in 1996 (N reg) in the UK. This is the one that looks similar to an old shape Transit, rather than the older one where you sit ahead of the front wheels.

They have a 2.4 N/A diesel up until 2001 when they got the D4D turbo engine.
The N/A engine goes quite well, and will just touch a ton given a flat long road. We used to get about 30 mpg out of it, and of the eleven Hiace's we used to use we had one gearbox failure (warranty) and a differential mounting bush gave out (warranty again). (Both on the same van so probably a bad example).
Other than that no other major problems surfaced.
The turbo engine is a much more relaxed motorway cruiser. You don't have to have your foot on the floor to keep up decent progress.

The hiace is unusual for a van in having independent suspension all round using longitudinal torsion bars and double wishbones at the front and semi trailing arms and coil springs at the rear. They handle quite well, but are set up very stiff, so it can be a little bouncy on the rear end if unladen.

Independant suspension cos it's based on a Japan-only luxury MPV.

Used to run an old Hiace. Great tool and very reliable but awkward to work on compared to a Transit.
Transit is also much cheaper on spares - Hiace is quite ofetn a trip to the Toyota dealers as there are few pattern parts available.
Still a good van though.
