Cool

Whats really worrying though is that despite the fact I was flat out between 20-80mph we were level all the way! A moral victory for the scooby you might think but I know better - I was being teased to death by it I crashed through every gear as quickly as I could yet he just seemed to amble along at my side safe in the knowlege he could blow me away any time he chose to It was good to see such an expensive car used a little although I really wish he'd just nailed it and left me

Anyone got the stats for these? I remember something along the lines of 4.5 to 60, 11 to 100 and a top speed of near 200mph!!!

I guess my scoobys not worth blowing away........kind of puts it in perspective

Guy at work has one - serious piece of automotive kit. I'm no Merc fan, but I have to say this is a lovely car.

Why bother full stop.... fighting with a class vehicle in every sense of the word - so what if you *had* beaten it to 100 mph ? It may be controversial, but IMHO 'SO WHAT?' - We all know what we would prefer to drive ... At the end of the day - you'll be spending a wedge to repair your gearbox just for the pleasure of a 'victory' post....

Q - a modded 2 litre jap car or a unique german 5 litre car..

PLEASE DON'T JUSTIFY THE OPPOSITE.....

Surely the AMG ones have the limiter removed anyway?

The CL55 AMG has the 5349cc V8 and, according to EVO,is limited to 155 mph.

Benz appear to have cornered the market in smooth, expensive and fast coupes......

The CL 600 is as follows

V12 5513cc.
493 bhp@ 5000 rpm.
590 lb/ft@ 1800 rpm.
2075 kg.
241 bhp/ton.
4.8 0-60.
155 mph (limited).
90,720 quid.

Personally, I`d go for the CL55 AMG as I like V8s and the CL600 is more the cruiser (but that 590 lb/ft looks interesting).

It`s just a pity that I`m 80 grand or so short!

Simon, also according to Evo, the speed limiter doesn't appear to work very well, a fault they have in common with RS4s & 6s Electrical gremlins? Most unlike the Germans

Wasn`t the 155mph limit a "gentleman`s agreement" between BMW, Merc and Audi designed to end the constant need for speed one-upmanship?

I know Porsche wasn`t interested in signing up.

I guess it`s a bit like the Japanese 280bhp agreement!

The limiter was as a result of a Gents agreement and AMG will "unofficially" remove it as it can't be seen to be too irresponsible and let your average Jo drive around at 190mph on the Autobahn while on the phone and eating a sarnie.

The S/SL/CL55 AMG is much firmer and sharper than the 600, suited to a bit of backroad action while the 600 is far lazier, relying more on that monster torque and featherbed ride to whoosh around smooth roads despite the similar outputs.

Merc will now do you a CL65 AMG which is special order only, and while I forget the exact spec is on for around 600 bhp and 600 lb ft of torque and £110 k.

For the daddy though, have a look at the Brabus E V12 (www.brabus.co.uk)which has a tuned 6lt bi-turbo V12 (640 bhp, 726 lb/ft) in an E Class shell and because of the limits of tyre technology is LIMITED to 212mph. Oh, and it costs £190 grand.

Bullsh1t.

It's the suspension, tires and weight distribution that makes the handling, not where the wheels are driven. Which is why when all manufactuters build faster track oriented cars, they'd work on those parts, and not just decide to power all 4 wheels.

On that, AMG runs on 245 front tires, 265 rear. Full IR Suspension, and same if not lower center of gravity than a BMW M5. A straight-line bullet did you say??

Bravo Bravo!

So what would be quicker on a tight, wet, twisty, bumpy road??? And that's all I care about because most of my driving is on such roads.

The stock SL55 AMG sold to you by your friendly Merc dealer is the car that the FIA use as the F1 Safety car (although it may be a CL55 AMG now but same engine none the less). It's been said that such is the deep rumble of that V8, you can actually hear it ABOVE the noise of the F1 engines on the parade lap. The tailpipes of the Brabus E V12 are enormous and I'd imagine it's a lot louder....
