Picked up my Clio Cup This Eve
#1
Bought this as a sensible motor for a little while not cheap & yes it is only a Renault Clio, but all i can say is WTF have we all been thinking! Yes our Scoobies et al are very capable VERY fast cars BUT! this clio really took me back to the 205 GTi that i used to have in me youth (ripe old age of 29 now) these Cup's are just superb I really had previosly subscribed to that old "they dont make the hot hatches like they used to" garbage, the torque steer alone is astounding, it feels so ubsurdley planted for a fwd car its untrue & it returned 38mpg on the run home on the M25. jeeeesus, you simply must have a go in one of these cars to see what i mean! bit of a boyracer image all the kids hanging outside blockbusters stare at it but hey thats half the fun & for i reckon half the running costs too of me old WRX! coming to a track near you for def! hot hatch more like hot go cart def grin factor 10, i got out the car with a headache! from the sheer concentration & the pure involvement of driving the thing at pace, + an ideal shopping trolley & commuter car to leave outside the train station with I hope not to much attention!

Its great fun playing with beemers/audis/merc/jag drivers as they think its a 1.2 shopping trolley and are completely shocked when they can't keep up :-)
But beware ... I get a shock this week when I thought I was leaving an Alfa 156 twin spark from the lights only to be overtaken by it - oh my god !!! - it turned out to be the GTA model 3.2 v6 and 250bhp
When I saw the badge I didn't feel so bad :-)
Happy driving :-)

Agree 100%. Sad to say but ever more Scoobies are being discriminated against with all this speed cameras, policing, theft etc nonsense.
Cup provides more thrills at lower speeds and still has a decent turn of speed. Plus its soooo cheap to run. Get 42.1MPG average (optimax) out of ours week in week out on the commute to work.
The Cup does still roll (cornering) and squirm (braking)a bit too much and I occasionally miss the high speed poke of my old P1 but pound per pound its a bargain.

Exactly what I did, sold my RX7 and got the Cup as a sensible but fun option, and I already love the little thing, loads of fun.
Only had it a week, so still getting used to what a fwd does as opposed to a 330BHP RWD, but enjoying it immensly, cant believe I didnt change sooner!!
Had an Integra type-r for two years before the RX7, and I prefer the Cup to that too, so as a more sensible option, its not really lacking in any department, considering its a pretty cheap new car (got mine new for £12800, with climate control).

Hmm what sort of price are these going second hand then? Sounds like something I might be interested in as getting rid of the scoob. How much is the climate control on top?
Thanks,
Simon.

I'm another convert to the cup club - all comments above echoed by me, particularly comparisons with 205 gti's of our 'youth'.
P1 bloke above - used prices just dipping below £10k now, but climate control has only been available for about a month, so not really trickled down to used market; it costs £695 on top of £12995 list price, but most buyers seem able to pay less than £13k for cup with climate; it does add a little weight though, but I for one would forgive that & give the extra cash for this one luxury. Sadly, retro-fitting climate seems to be a £1500 job - I'll keep opening the windows, then.

Lower speeds? Unless a scooby is modded or a WRX (jap) STi etc etc it will only be marginally quicker than a standard Cup 10-100. If it’s a bug eye it will be in serious trouble. I raced a M99 (had an exhaust) at crail and matched him all the way up the strip. Since then I’ve added a couple of things and know id have beaten him in that particular race. Also had a race vs Saxoboys modded turbo and he also thinks the same thing about standard turbo vs a cup 10-100. More than willing to let someone prove me wrong at crail.

my local dealer has a cup with 7k on the clock at 10450£ i paid £9900 for mine with 8k on it. trying to get used to the seating position, i'm 6ft2 & its not that it too cramped or anything just that the seat feels to thick/high if you now what i mean, also is it me or could the steering wheel do with being a bit smaller? minor i know as the car is just amazing, never mind power to weight ratios in mags etc they should def start doing £/grin or £/bhp, the cup is almost a perfect mini scoob, in terms of all round ability commute/thrash/track/pootle

the first service is at 12k miles costing 140ish quid, do a search on evo's website evo.co.uk they have had one on elong term test for quite a while, 12ks worth of tracking commuting etc I think it went back as the friction plate on the clutch was shagged, but after the abuse its been given, mine has a 3yr warranty til oct 2005 go & try one you will not regret it

Picked up my brand new Cup 3 weeks ago and I love it!!!
Got a very good deal on it as my mate works for Renault, so it was even more of a bargain.
Just approaching a 1000 miles now, so it's only just run in and still tight, but it's not slow and they do get quicker!
Going to Santa Pod in it this weekend, so we'll see what it's like down the strip...

P1Fanatic, seriously consider one. I went from a big power RX7, and as little as a month ago wouldnt have even considered one.
Its early days, but I can honestly say I dont yet miss the RX.
I saw one pull up outside a pub about 3 weeks ago, looked at it, and thought "whoa, that looks really cool, wouldnt mind one", test drove one about a week after that, and bought one the next day.
Costs wise, the Cup doesnt need MOT for three years, has 12000 mile intervals with reasonable costs (RX was every 6 months, last full service cost me £500!!), hasnt dipped below 34MPG (RX was doing about 15), comes with 3 year warranty and AA cover, and has normalish tyres (RX rears were 255 40 17's, now those cost a bit!!), so for me personally saves me a lot of money, and is as much fun so far as the RX was!!
Its basically just loads of fun to drive about in, more nippy than all out fast, but find a good road and its as much fun as anything ive driven.

i would love to have my cup against a WRX or Classic UK Turbo, i am certain it would have the Bugeye not sure about the classic's though, the main thing to note is that the clio is such a compact & relatively noisey car that the it feels so much more rapid, ive owned both standard & modded bugeye & classics

Another ex-Scooby owner with a Cup here
Done nearly 11k in mine now, and have to agree with the comments so far. The only bit I do miss is the Impreza exhaust note, but only a little I ended up putting a K-Tec pipe on my Cup which I like - bloody noisy tho! Had mine RR'd and gained a respectable 10bhp from the exhaust and panel filter.
Particularly happy with the running costs as well - mpg is astounding for a car this quick, servicing cheap and only every 12k. I've been pricing new tyres this week and delighted to discover I can get 2 new Toyos for the front for £55 each (fitted)

mmmm, in a straight line poss not, although there is no lag whatsoever, as i'm sure you get in the rst. its proper old skool hot hatch instant power, i spose on a circuit the clio is such a well composed package that it would have the escort, bearing in mind the clio is a totally standard car with no mods at all, i suspect the rst has had some spanner work to get it to those figures, cup's official figures are
1998cc
172bhp@6250
147lb ft @5400
1011kg
0-60 6.5
top speed 138
the figures arent ground breaking but it really is the way it all comes together, i'll let you know how i get on at bedford

They are pretty impressive figures, the peak torque is developed pretty high by the looks of things, I guess its still pretty lively at low revs though??
The Warranty does kind of appeal to me!!
Also I hear great things about economy which I dont get in the Escort!!
Yeah there is definately lag in the Escort!!
Its had a bit of work to get it to that level, its just I am getting tired of the reliability problems with the Escort. I love the power, I just dont fancy getting rid of it then buying a Clio just to be disappointed by the power and speed of it all!
Will be good to hear about how it goes at Bedford...
Cheers,
Grant

get yourself to a renault dealer & test one out, used ones are dipping below 10k, a lot of cash i agree but 3yrs warranty & aa cover & mpg of 36+, ive tracked a couple of older 90 m3, 95m3's & they are great but you cant beat thrashing a newer car, 2001 impreza & soon the clio, they just feel more able & capable to take what you throw at them with the confidence that you can just drive home afterwards with no real reliabilty issues, was thinking that i wish i had aircon though maybe you should consider a standard 172? old shape ones are around 6-7k ish?
