Chris Bangle... the undoing of bmw?
#1
after nearly 20 years of loving the way bmw's look, for the first time ever, i cant think of one new bmw i like the look of.
no matter what you think of beemer drivers, IMHO they made some of the best looking cars available. audi made classy looking cars, mercedes made boring, stuffy looking cars.
now i think mercedes arguably make the best looking german cars, followed by audi.
at the end of the day, no matter how good the car is, no one will buy it if its a dog.
and chris bangle is the daddy of all dogs IMHO.
is he the undoing of bmw? or is it just me? and why does he still have a job, are they mad?

He's apparantly very persuasive!
Agree, the new Bangle generation isnt to my liking either (Z4 apart)
Biggest mistake BMW made was firing Reitzle, he was the one who saw through Bangle's jibb and kept him in check
I only hope that M gmbH can sort out the five looks for the M5 otherwise i'll be cancelling my order....
I wanted a six series aswell but to me it looks like a dogs dinner, which looks even worse when compared to the merc SL. Shame

Z4, not a huge fan... But still a nice car, and MILES ahead of the old Z3's.
7 Series, absolutely hate it, and I-Drive seems too complex IMO.
New 5 Series, horrible styling, and agree with above unless the M Boys can sort it (doubtful) cause the V10 engine wont be enough to sell it.
6-Series, nice idea, poor design...
Cheers,
Grant

It's good to see a company like BMW making such dreadful mistakes, reminds us we are all mortal.

The new 7 series is already doing very badly compared to the old model, perhaps the new 5 will be the same.

You can never appeal to everyone - as long as they remain cracking cars to drive, I will still aspire to owning one. I'd rather have a new shape M5 if it's as good as the existing one despite it's looks rather than a TT which looks gorgeous but isn't really that inspiring to drive.
I realise that in the mass market ugly cars won't sell however good they are, but I may be the only person who finds the new flame designs refreshing. By the way, I also prefer the Bugeye, like the Cayenne, nearly bought an Alfa SZ and also think that Sophie Ellis-Bextor has her good days....

Beauty is in the eye etc. but don't judge too harshly until you have seen the new models in the metal...
e.g. I thought the Cayenne was a tub of lard from the launch photgraphs but that car simply does not photograph well at all. The ones that I have seen on the road actually are quite imposing and I'd say that the Cayenne S is more subtle than an X5!
I've seen an few of the new fives now and they look much better than I expected. Dame Edna's Spectacles influenced headlights included.
However, one Bangle car that really could fail to deliver is the forthcoming BMW one series. The prototype that they showed at Geneva in 2002 really was really ill proportioned to my eyes.

Hmmm current 7 and forth comming 5 really are an accquired taste. The Z4 however I think looks great in the flesh, although the concept car looked bloody awful!
On the subject of the 1 series, what is the point of it?
If you want a small car made by BMW you buy a MINI. If you want something bigger you buy a 3 series compact. Can't quite see how it will fit in the range
