Grant,
My mate Paul should be getting his GTIR back in the next few weeks if you fancy a look.
It's been in Greer for ages, but should be just about finished now.

Great hatches, they are raw and becuase they are now getting on a bit, there are a lot of dogs around, not to mention with worn items, so you need to tread very carefully if looking for a decent one.
Good Points:
- cheap for their performance, standard K regs can be purchased for as little as £6000-£6500
- Feels and is quick for a little hatch, especialy when modified
(0-60 5.0-5.4sec, 0-100 14sec, 1/4mile in 13.9 as standard, when modified correctly and setup with fueling (unichip etc) then this can be 0-60 4.5, 0-100 mid 11s and 1/4mile in 12s)
- can be reliable if looked after correctly, and you don't just wack up the boost
- other drivers just don't know what it is and try it on, the best factor of owning a Pulsar!
- very chuckable handling
- lighter than most 4wd's, only 1250kg with electrics including a/c and can be made far lighter, Dakar special is only 1190kg
- loads of tuning potential,
Bad Points:
- its max power looks can give it an ugly look in some eyes, and most are black
-requires decent setup with correct high octaine fueling, even if standard
-Crap brakes and wheel size - need upgrading if you don't do anything else
- understeers even with 4wd - can be uprated with bumpsteer/whiteline etc
-Weak Gearbox
-Weak internals/pistons - requires rebuild above 1-1.2bar 300/320bhp
- poor areodyanmics means once over 110moh or so you feel the difference
-can be expensive to run and fix when they go wrong
- top mount intercooler suffers from heat like scoobs, should be changed to front mount for big power
How fast can they go when highly tuned?.....look out for a red one with black bonnet at totb2 in August.

Johnny, I remember you telling me how long its been off the road, glad to hear he's getting it back soon!!
It would be good if I could have a look round one, as I say its one of the ideas I've got at the moment should I decide to change the car...
MkyBoy - I saw that one for sale on either GTIROC.com or a site like that, very impressive spec however, maybe not such a good option as this will be used everyday?
nisr227 - Thanks for the pros and cons of them, I knew they had a weak gearbox. The ones that I have been looking at have already had brake conversions & wheel upgrades and most of them already have the front mounted Forge/HKS cooler... Which is nice!!
Cheers,
Grant

I've got one.
I use to own a scooby WRX 240 BHP,and my brothers R (username nisr227) blew me away, since then I've bought a blue R and and modded it big time.....the rest is history.
It will soon be pushing around 370 - 400 BHP, when I do my last mod and change the ECU. And that's with reliablity, a bombproof rebuild by NORRIS DESIGNS.
The weakist point is, like my brother said, the gearbox. However you can buy very strong boxes form Quaife and PAR. I'm hoping to get one in the next year or two.
I really respect the scoobies, and will probably own one again, when I need a 4 door.....but in the meantime, I find my pulsar good fun and very fast. Just have a look at Bruce Spence's GTIR at this years TEN OF THE BEST 2 at Elvington.....I doubt any scooby wil beat in up the 1/4 mile. Watch this space.

driven a 290bhp version , fast as f$*k , would i own one ? no !not if it was my primary car , great if it wasn't , just to take for a blast now and again

I had mine for a year and they're definitely not the cheapest to run, in fact I spent £6000 in 11 months (modding and fixing) excluding insurance and fuel which were both pretty horrendous aswell! If I had to buy another I would use it as a 2nd car for weekends etc. Sold it to go to OZ at the start of the year and now I'm back miss it loads
Mine made 276bhp and 305lbs torque with only a bleed valve set to 1 bar and full mongoose exhaust which aint bad £ per bhp! And that was before I finished modding it.
Get one but get a good one and make sure you have a bit of "backup" cash just incase! Oh and I hated the gearbox with a passion.....

Ok Insurance and Petrol wise, how do they compare to:
Lightly Modded UK Scooby
Lightly Modded Jap Scooby
Stage 1 Cossie 2WD/4WD (About 280bhp)
These are the other ideas that I am considering for my next car...

Grant

What i've heard, they are slightly cheaper on insurance and better on MPG, but it depends what declared mods you've got that affect both.
As I said, the main factor is the running costs of modifying (like cossie, there arn't many standard ones, everyone does it) and replacing parts when/if they go wrong.
I've managed to get 250miles out of my 1bar (unichipped) Pulsar, taking it very very easy on the motorway from Watford to Tenby, South Wales.....but due to its looks you do get people that try it on....so its difficult to be conservative!
IMO, they are better than scoobs and Evo's for launching up a 1/4 mile, and they do produce better figures per same true bhp, just goto Santapod at you'll see this is the case, but this performance gets to gearbox in time if its not upgraded.
If you looking at one as just a weekend car, then they are highly recommended. Everyday thrashing?...well mines getting the gearbox rebuilt at the moment after 3 years ownership!
