I'm buying a new house so I need to calm down on the car expenses. I'm about to chop in my '01 2.7 Boxster and want to get something for about £15k that offers maximum driving thrills. It won't be a daily hack but will need to be reliable enough for early morning airport runs and the occaisional client visit (so no TVR's or yellow 70's 911's please). Short list so far...
S4
E36 M3 Evo Coupe
C36 AMG saloon
However, these are all big money to run so I'm thinking....
S1 Elise
Civic Type R
Any more for any more? Anyone driven any of the above? I'm concerned that after years of torquey German cars (Golf Gti Mk2, 328i, Boxster) the CTR will be a screaming nightmare but I'm sure I'm wrong.

I have driven the elise several times and they are frustrating because they have no power or LSD
Been passenger in the civic and very impressed but they are front wheel drive
Have you considered the S2000? I have driven one of them and would have that over the elise anyday, they are more sociable, comfortable, powerful, better looking etc.
The BM would be a good choice too

I test drove a Civic Type R, and straight afterwards took the S2000 out, and IMHO the Civic is much better. There are some nice touches in the S2000 being a convertable, digital dash and push button start, but I felt to get any go out of it, you had to push over 6500 rpm for the V Tec to cut in. For a car that has 240bhp, I felt my Scoob would beat it hands down. The Type R Civic on the otherhand was one of the best FWD cars I have driven. Again the V tec engine kicks in at 6000rpm but I felt the power upto that point was more responsive than the S2000.

E36 Evo, that is where my money would go mate.
Get one with an extended BMW Warranty and then nothing to worry about apart from servicing which is not that bad..
321BHP as std...and RWD
What more justification do you need to buy one....plus for 15k you could get a nice R plate with low miles and it won't lose money like a nearly new CTR.

Tempting though it is to spend £50 on a nail and the rest on high class hookers (thanks "What Would Scooby Do"!) I'm actually going to spend it all on a car.
So... Thanks for all the suggestions.... Can't do a Westy/Caterham and a second car (space, time, costs etc) and I've had a Caterham Superlight before anyway. Also, while I'd love a RS500, Integrale, Quattro 20v etc, I can't rely on one as a sole car in London.
The M3/C43 idea is looking less promising as they're gonna cost a lorra lorra money to run despite the Star Ship Enteprise performance they can offer.
I like the S2000 suggestion and may flex the £15k to accomodate one though it would be a pre '02 car and hence I need to be sure it wont flick me off the road every time it rains. The other S2k threads suggest it's not all that bad as long as you treat it with a bit of respect. Will drive one soon.
Any S2k experience here? I'll keep you informed.
Thanks again.

all modern audi's are duller than ditch water to drive even top gear slated the V8 s4 for being dull to drive even thou they lapped there track faster in it than then new M3
Is reliability and trouble free motoring important for you and do you do alot of miles, if so civic is the best choice
Elise only for weekend driving unless you are into S&M or the size of a jockey
Other wise the M3 its the most fun of the rest, although its handling is flawed compared to the E30 and E46 and will hold its price the best.
Supras are very fast but too hairy chest gold medalion man for me.
944 turbos are great until they go wrong, engine rebuilds over 10k.

Here's the story so far....
S2000 slightly over budget (pity as I really fancy one of those), CTR - driving one in a week but I'm suspicious about the lack of torque. M3 - too expensive to run I think, same for a C43 AMG.
Wild card - Audi S3. I know, I know - it'll be like driving a quick sofa but after 2 years with a Boxster not much will be up to the challenge so I fancy something quick, well built, full of toys and "reasonable" on the twisties. Am I getting old?
