Yeah I'll be launching it off the trailer - so a 4x4 would be useful for pulling it up the slip. Budget is as little as possible, maybe a few grand? A Transit van's not a bad idea - anyone know how much they weigh unladen? It'd be useful for carting about my windsurfing sails too - rigging them is such a faff

2000kg is a lot to tow
i bought an A4 tdi for towing and thats only rated to something like 1500kg, so for 2K you're out of the car league...
Transit type things have got to be the way to go...

I've got a Passat TDi which tows my jetski nicely but towing a boat that size would be risky. I might look into dry docking it and just use the passat for launching / retrieval

For 2000kg you can forget any car short of an S Class or Rolls!
Any separate chassis 4WD would do, but a long wheelbase transit with 4WD and a newer type turbo diesel would be ideal. Paint it black with a red stripe for that A-Team look as well

Mitsubishi L200 'Animal' or 'Warrior'. Website here
May not be that quick but IMO they look great! (for a truck!)
p.s. quite pricey though!

You'll need a vehicle that has a towing capacity of at least 2000kg (obviously) assuming this includes the weight of the trailer. Ideally it should also have a kerb weight in the region of 2350kg so that the trailer is ~85% of the weight of the tow vehicle, which is the recomendation for safe towing. (unless you've got loads of towing experience, drive HGVs etc, then upto 100% is ok). You'll also need to measure the nose weight of the trailer and make sure that doesn't exceed the vehicles limits as well.
I think you'll be looking at one of the larger 4x4s. Something like a Nissan Terrano (for example) has a maximum towing weight of 2800kg, a kerb weight of 2510kg, a nose weight limit of 120kg.
Hope that helps.
Steve.

DONT MEAN TO BE NOSEY, WHEN DID YOU PASS YOUR TEST AS THERE IS SOME DAFT LAW RELATING TO TOWING, IF YOUVE PASSED YOUR TEST AFTER A CERTAIN DATE CANT REMEMBER WHAT IT IS NOW THEN YOU CANT TOW A TRAILER OVER A CERTAIN WEIGHT
#19
If you passed your test before 1st Jan 1997 you can drive a combined (car + trailer) weight of up to 8250kg. If you passed after 1st Jan 1997 you are limited to total of 3500kg unless you pass a separate test.
Cheers.

A Landrover Defender 110 is pretty good, as is a Discovery, but my preference would be for a Nissan Patrol. I have used all three (diesels) to tow a 2000kg boat and trailer all over the place, the torque of the Nissan was superior to the others and made all the difference.
