DAIHATSU CHARADE GTTI
#2
Daihatsu make the best sub one litre cars in the world
the 993cc 100bhp gti,the 650cc Avantzo TRXX,the 750cc 120bhp storia x4
i own the GTTi pictured below i got it when i was 18 and the buzz i got driving it at that age was the same as the buzz of having a wrx type RAat 22 a truely amazing car
i took it do a garage a while back and it was left out side and some pikeys decided they would try and steal it ,but they could not so they smashed it up.
anyways i am getting it back .
was wondering how fast it would be with
the following
bleed valve with FCD set to 14 psi
hks induction
full exhast system
what kind of o-60 ,1/4 time
also what do you think of the toyota starlet Gt turbo 1.3 litre turbo 0-60 6.8 standard

The Charade GTti is ok, personally I wasn't too impressed when I had a go in one cos I was driving a modded R5 turbo at the time which would've wiped the floor with it, still pretty good for a 1l though. I don't think you can turn the boost up too much on em cos they're running pretty close to the limit as standard.
The Starlet however is a beast, I went to a rolling road day about 2 months ago which featured one at 220+BHP!

My first car was a Starlet Glanza-V and my second car was a Charade GTti
As regarding the Charade, the internals are very strong...
The starlet was fookin fast, mine was 180bhp
The starlet had crap handling though, LOADS of understeer(and sometimes the back would snap out violently on throttle lift off), the charade was a better car to drive.
I still have my Charade and I ain't seling it

RRR if thats your site I've been wanting to talk to you for ages as I run the owners club.
Standard boost is 8 psi and each psi is worth about 5bhp on a sorted car giving you around 130 bhp. If you have the rally downpipe thats another 10bhp with the exhasut and induction thats about another 15. So you should be loking at around 150bhp ish. I'd go no more than 14 psi as you do run the danger of running lean. You also need to watch the charge temprature as the turbo is possibly going to be running above its peak efficiency and heating the charge too much, This can lead to detonation and big bills. You might want to look at modifying the turbo using the compressor wheel from an Isuzu trooper trubo diesel.
I would strongly advise fitting an air fuel meter if going above 12.5 psi. The standard ECU runs out of fuelling at 15psi.
Regarding speed well I bought a GTti after going out in one with 157bhp which was quicker than my Impreza turbo. it was very scarey.

Philz the Charade engine is amazingly strong. They run 50% increase no problem. I know of one car running a full Motec ECU running silly boost, hybrid turbo, proper downpipe with seperate wastegate downpipe etc with 240BHP !!!! From 1 litre on standard internals !

I had one with a BBR chip, the install certificate said 0.9 bar which it ran all day every day no probs. As long as you service them and don't go too mental they are very reliable. Lift off oversteer was interesting, very little notice

How easy is it to get a bottom end for one of these?
my mate has one and the bottom end is shot he wants peanuts for it, but its in great nick
can't remember exactly what happened but the Daihatsu garage dianosed the problem wrong and he shelled out £1200 for a line bore, crank regrind, new shells, oil pump etc and the problem was still there.. hes gave up on it now, i could probably take it off him for £100 its got 16" alloys and some decent speakers at least!

Engines are onot the easiest things to get. I'd be suprised if he needed anyhting more than bottom end shells.
For £100 I'd bite his hand off. If you don't have it I'd certainly be interested. Let me know if you have it or not.

Get it rebuilt. Pistons are not that much , about £90 per set . Cranks are the most expensive thing but very rarely does anything go wrong with a crank. The engines are quite easy to work on too.
I can pout you intouch with someone locally from the club who may be able to help you see whats wrong with it and what needs doing.

Hi m8
i saw him over the weekend and he wants £500 for it, which is abit more than wanted to pay for a project not sure if this is a good deal or not?
I think hes still smarting over the repair bill Aparently its the balancer shaft(not sure what that is) thats the problem, its spun the bearing and worn the block. It had a brand new crank fitted first time round as they diagnosed the problem wrong, they said they wanted another £1200 to sort this shaft out and then there would be no guarantee's...
I'm not sure whether thats a good price or not considering the work that needs doin? if your interested or know anyone that is i can pass on the details... also i've got some pics somewhere that i took ages ago, i'll see if i can find um...
Cheers
