MK3 Golf VR6 or 16 valve
#1
On my quest for the perfect car for about six grand, have been changing my mind about MK3 Golfs, question, is the VR6 worth the extra running costs compared to the 16 valve because a slightly modded 16 valve seems to put out about the same power (170 ish) bhp ?
#3
No is the answer.
the vr6 requires serious money to get it going any quicker, and in my opinion doesnt warrant it.
2.8 litres and 174 bhp? its a bit pathetic and really not that fast.
Saying that the power delivery on the 16v is a bit peaky.
Have you considered a corrado G60 or VR6?
much nicer to look at, better handling and easier to mod.
The vr6 is always going to make whatever car it is in a little nose heavy.

I've got my Mk3 16v for sale at the moment. '95 N with 62k. It's got a Remus exhaust and a K&N 57i and was rolling roaded in October last year showing 170.5BHP and 149lb/ft
IMHO the 16v is a better car than the VR6 - I test drove a few VR's when looking for a Mk3 and decided that the 16v was better cos it was lighter and felt more nimble. With the addition of the Koni kit I have had fitted it is superb!
See the following thread for more details.
http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=205451
Price is negotiable;
£4700 as it is,
£4300 with the amp & components removed, or
£4000 with the standard 15" alloys and ICE

For £6k you can get a very nice Corrado VR6 which is far better than both the golfs, especially in the handling department. Also no slouch with a 0-60 in 6.5 and 150mph top end.

Mike, your Golf is nice, have seen it in the classifieds, just waiting for some money to come thru so if you havent sold it I may just be interested, it looks a minter and in the best colour.
Like the Corrado but they seem pricey, 6k gets one with mega miles, low milers (i.e. under 100) are 8k still !

Don't you believe the prices, a lot of them are hoping and not selling.
I sold mine a coupla months ago for £6k. Dec 94 M reg, 86000 miles, Classic green with beige leather, electric everything. FVWSH, 12 months MOT, very good condition etc. I had it at £7k with no interest, bought it down to £6.5k no interest and in the end sold for £6k as a)it'd been on the market for 2/3 months and b) I needed to get shot of it as I was moving.
£7k for a mint Storm
£6.5k for a mint VR6 with sub 50,000 miles
£6k for 50-100k miles in top condition
£5k for high milers and ok conditioners
Under £5k for old, high milers and iffy ones.

A friend of mine used to own a mrk 3 gti 16v which he lowered and exhaust/filter, to be honest this transformed the car, it handled better than any other fwd car that ive been in. Not been in a vr6 though but all the extra weight up front would make it not so good as a 16v.
As for corrados i would avoid them full stop, i had a g60 for 2 years and it wasnt all that good, lots of money for running costs and it just isnt that quick even with a chip. As for the Vr6 people rant and rave about them being the best frd coupe...... i would never buy one but they must b better than a g60.

Go for a corrado VR6, they are much much rarer, they look better, they handle alot better and are a future classic..!!!
The corrado VR6 also had a 2.9L engine as opposed to the 2.8 of the golf..
Just my opinion, as my mate had a corrado and for a FWD car it was very impressive in the handling department, on the other hand my mum has a 2.0 8v golf and this is way behind the corrados handling ability.

Insurance would be more on a corrado.... also some companys wont insure them!.... i think a well sorted mrk3 golf is as good handling wise as a corrado!
Vr6's are more thirstier than a 16v too.... there r lots of factors to consider me thinks.

I've got a Corrado VR6 - wouldn't say insurance is a killer (£680) for a 28 yr old, admittedly with a clean record and good NCB.
Not as thirsty as you may think - I easily get 32 mpg on a 25 mile journey to work.
It's all horses for courses I suppose, but I love mine to bits. Only downside - could do with a better gearbox!
Totally agree with Dracoro, there are some over optimistic sellers out there with respect to prices - 8K is a touch excessive!
Cheers,
Nev

I've recently sold my Golf vr6, and I loved it. I looked at corrados at the time, and they do feel quicker, but the golf still has the practically factor.
Don't forget about torque when confronted with comments about 16v's being easily tunable to 170bhp - the 174bhp in the vr6 may not sound too impresive but the way it delivers it's power is just soooo smooth - just leave it in 4th and 5th and feel it go. Or rev it to the limiter in 2nd and 3rd and hear it - one of the best sounding engines ever.
For 6k you'll get an absolute minter - shoudl get you a p or r reg highline with leather and climate control. Mine was a p reg non-highline with 100,000 mile son it - I sold it for £4250. The big engines do 200k miles without too much bother, too.
Oh, make sure you consider sorting out the suspension and wheels sizes, though - standard suspension is sea-sick inducingly soft & wallowly, and the 15" standard wheels look out of proportion.

Driven both and owned a VR6(Golf).
VR6. It was a quick creamy smooth Q car (when debadged) The engine was good with alot of grunt. It felt quicker than the newer 4 motion as it had 5 gears as opposed to the 4 motions 6. Thats the good stuff everything else was poor, handling, brakes etc. So would say no to the VR6. (The Corrado is supposed to be excellent though)
The 16v, although slower was definately the better car in terms of how it drove.
Ever considered a MK1 golf GTi. A classic which will go up in value one day. Just a thought.
Best wishes
Steve

Considered a Mk1, yep, have had two and currently have a MK2 in bits receiving new wings, love mk1's but I am afraid my wife may leave me if I buy another having spent most of my tewnties farting about with MK1's (and MK2's), unless you get one somebody has lavished time and money on to be honest they are a right old dog seem thru rose tinted spectacles, noisy tinny, crap brakes, not all that fast, wobbly handling on skinny tyres.
A mk1 needs bigger wheels, coil overs, at least a 16 valve engine from a mk2/3, completely gutting bodywise, new interior as most smell of elderley incontinent Alsations, nice paint job, bigger brakes and a proper servo linkage.
A nice thought but its a thought I had ten years ago and the reality was expensive and soul destroying, until I drove it......
I want a nice modern car to complement the MK2 I am keeping cos I love it and its worth nowt anyway !

Agree with VW gear boxes being ****e..... i sold my G60 and the g/box was soooo ****ed... half the time it didnt go in secord, the gear change became terrible and very rubbery etc.... i cant belive i sold it like that but at the test drove it behaved itself.
Plus the gearbox had only done 75 000 miles ive currently got a 156 000 mile astra gte and its fine!
