Saw this in the Autotrader, and the 0% finance deal actually covers the decent models!!

OTR of £15100 for the saloon vRS - 0% over 3 years..

Seems like a bit of a bargain, if only I could get rid of my ZX volcane and maybe the Legacy Turbo.. (Any offers over the £300 trade in on the ZX? Details available!)

Main question (which has probably been asked before) is would the 4x4 Turbo be worth going for - and then having it chipped up to the 180bhp of the vRS?

Any other decent sporty offers out there, especially with 0% finance?

Cheers

Steven

Just out of interest what kind of performance do these cars offer? I'm after something sporty as well for around this money. Would love a Scooby but I think it's out of the question.

vRS unmodified (FWD) has a book 0-62mph of 7.9secs
Not sure on the 4x4 Turbo.. Probably about 9 ish..

Quite quick, not as fast as my Legacy - but a bit newer!

Steve,

Depends what you want. RS can get better power, but has longer gearing and traction isn't as good. Therefore 4x4 is better for tight twisties, RS more for flowing roads.

Remapping will give approx 220 on a 4x4, 230 on a RS. Change the cat for a free flowing one and change the downpipe, add approx 10% to those figures. Cost for remap approx £425. Full exhaust approx £800-1000. Out of the box most 4x4s seem to have 165, RS approx 190-195, as opposed to the declared figures of 150 and 180 respectively.

RS brakes are better, handling is more "sporty". 4x4 is more comfortable. 4x4 is estate only. RS has a large boot.

There is friendly rivalry between the 2 groups of owners.

Oh and if you want to go the whole hog on the power front, for approx £2,500 how about a 350-380 conversion?

If you have any more questions about it, why not pop over to talk to us at www.briskoda.net. There is a review section for members to post their thoughts on the car. Oh and you won't be alone, there are quite a few scoob converts who have realised that it is a viable alternative to the scoob (insert usual disclaimers about twisties etc ).

I love my RS, but can see the merits of the 4x4 (must say most scoob converts seem to go the 4x4 route). I find mine to be adequately quick, it handles OK and the brakes are pretty good. Servicing, economy and insurance are all far cheaper on the Octavia. The dealers are friendly and most seem to love it when you mod it

My 18 month old one has so far done 90,000 miles, including just under 8,000 track miles and it hasn't broken down yet. Anyone wanna try that in a scoob?

Oh, and I'm sure there are a few scoob owners who will be able to give comparisons on the performance front having seen mine, as I say, I'm biased.

Do a search for 'Octavia' and you'll find a thread on the 4x4 & vRS which I started.

OR have a look at Briskoda.net, as yesterday's rolling road figures are on there.

The engines are identical in the 4x4 (detuned) & vRS and both go
up to 220/230 (one 4x4 owner had 232 yesterday).

I'm very happy with mine - just don't expect flat cornering.
If you think original Legacy Turbo only brought up to date, you won't be far off. A secret bargain !

Steve,

If you can, try to get to a track day that TaviaRS goes on (assuming you are still tracking her Tav?) and have a ride in the car.

Awesome.

I am a convert - but the cars aren't available in Aus though.

Flat 4x4 - Thanks for digging that up, I had done a search but missed that post.. A bit odd.. Interesting reading, especially the remapping (seems 220bhp-ish is about normal), who does the chips for this? AMD? Any problems with warranty if you chip it?

Still not sure, the 0% finance thing is very tempting and I'd still be spending 15K on getting something that (even when chipped) won't be that much quicker than my Legacy Turbo.. Might have another month to think about it - dealer said today that the offer may go on until end of June.

Would like to see the vRS on a track, or is it a 1,4 16v!!?? If TaviaRS is on a track nearby soon let me know (seems he's a bit keen on those track days!!).

Out of interest, has anyone found any more 0% finance deals around? Thought Vauxhall had it for a while, but nothing short of a VX220 appealed.

Cheers

Don't you dare class Vauxhall in the same category as Skoda !
You really do have to think bargain Audi VW - I'm serious.

On performance, if your Legacy Turbo is standard (I owned one plus a 2.5GX and 2 Imprezas), you will find that outright acceleration on a remapped (Jabbasport) 4x4 Octavia or vRS is slightly quicker.

Where the 1.8T engine scores over the Legacy though is in torque and lack of turbo lag in 4th and 5th - the latter was the weak point in the Legacy.

If you are happy with a true 140mph, 0-60 in 6.5 and 30-70 similar but also with 30mpg and lower running costs then you can't go far wrong.

Flat4x4, wasn't comparing Vauxhalls to Skodas, just mentioning that they used to have 0% finance on the VX220 (and other, less inspiring models!).

My Legacy turbo is standard, and from what you say the performance is very similar post chip (I'll check out the Jabbasport site).

Thanks for the info!

The MG is nice but will lack grunt after the Legacy. Every road test I've seen has criticised the lack of torque, and its not turbocharged so you can't 'improve' it much

Steve, which side of London are you?

There are chipped RSs and 4x4s on most sides of London. If you post over on Briskoda I'm sure someone will let you have a go to see what you think.
