Had a go in one at the weekend.... firstly i must say that it wasnt as quick as i was led to believe reading forums etc, the car belongs to a friend and i have been in it before but never driven it, on his way round mine he couldnt shake off a Clio Williams and during the drive a BMW 328 got the better off him..... i cant belive it really i thought this car was a match for suburu's/lancers.

Its got a good turn of speed and great handling but it seems to be lacking in sum grunt and turbo lag is a problem, i wonder if a chipped one would be much better???

How does a uk turbo scooby compare??

there's no way on earth a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo would keep up with a scoob in the twisties !

LOL, the coupe turbo threads usually aren't so bad as only a handful of their owners come on here. I like the 20vt but couldn't live with its looks myself. My mate had one and once above 80mph it was particularly useful. Until then my scooby would have done loads of damage and he'd only make it back up at totally mental speeds. That said, mines is modified and his wasn't and they are cheap as chips these days so 13k could get you a very fast 20vt. However, I question the sanity of a 300+bhp fwd coupe

Mine's a S reg 20vt, picked it up for £7500, from garage, so some come back.

there was one for sale recent, had 350bhp, had racelogic traction system, it had a recorded 4.3secs 0-60, not bad!

in the wet it is a nightmare to get power down, even in my standard one, but dry/straightish road good fun to be had.

who said they cant live with the looks?, whats wrong with the looks?

Nothing wrong with it according to the bosst gauge, the manifold might need changing but it all seemed in working order, no doubt it was fast but a BMW 328 should trouble it !!!!!!!!

It was a nice drive just that lag was a bit too much IMO, still this was the first turbo car which ive driven and i must admit the turbo is addictive i wonder why he does so much money in petrol.

I just don't like the overall shape and in particular the lights and the slashes in the bodywork.

16vt have had some problems with belts. not so much the 20vt. The Fiat DOES take quite a while (like a month or more!) to learn how to get the most out of them after the more instant power delivery of the jap 4x4 turbos, but once you learn how to use em they will do your scoob on anything other than serious twisties and standing starts.

sorry!

looks are a bit iffy I'll grant you but then again so is the scoob?

round 2?

p.s. I thought they were pretty tardy myself for a while.

If you're seriously interested in one go to the coupe forum and ask if someone can take you for a spin in theirs

I've been in one and whilst very fast (faster than a standard scooby) they are not as lightening as they are made out. A P1, teked up MY99/00 or 276bph import would spank one to 100 and hold one 60-100. Then, dare I say it, there are the corners

p1 and boggo 20vt have same 60-100 time. p1 ain't your base model scoob though is it?
so p1 against modded coupe - coupe has it.

0-30 obviously the p1 kicks *** - 4WD, lower ratios etc.

why do scooby boys always seem to compare a special edition model like the p1 to bog standard cars? kinda being unfair there

P1 vs Standard 20vt? What?

Perhaps a fairer comparison would be between a Scooby and a Coupe (or an MR2 or a 200sx or an ITR or whatever) with identical amounts of power at the flywheel. Which would allow you all to say "yes, well, in the twisties, in the wet, in Iceland, yada yada Scooby 4wd yada"... but would also mean the Scoobies would be at a disadvantage in other conditions. ScreechMR2's right - you're don't enjoy comparing like for like, are you?

At the end of the day, everyone likes their car for different reasons, and different cars all have too many different strengths and weaknesses to adequately compare. Let's just enjoy our cars, and not argue too much with other enthusiasts. Personally, I f*ckin hate Golf TDi 150 drivers who think they're the dogs b*llocks at the moment...

As you mentioned it, I agree about Tdi drivers........I work for a fleet company and some of my colleagues go on about how fast they are.... ha ha, they do not require much effort with all that torque and hence feel quicker than they really are, gives me pleasure to knock them into place with a 300bhp Gti-R.

Re the Fiat Coupe, they are pretty quick top end due to areodyanmics but how fast do you have to be going to really leave someone?....120mph+...big deal and licence eating figures. I agree with the looks though, they are one of the better Coupes around. I nearly bought one once but was put of by some of my maintinance colleagues' advice.

"p1 and boggo 20vt have same 60-100 time"

when you think about it, that is very impressive!

3rd gear is very fast, you really feel the shove in your back from the turbo.

250/270 bhp is easyly gained with very little cost.
+ 5 clyinder engine sounds great also.

1st/2nd gear boost limited, 3rd gear feels like the car accerations faster, than 2nd, odd feeling.

great fun leaving most cars, "tailgators,Golf tdi150" wondering what left them for dead.

"you have to be going to really leave someone?...."

get it into 3rd gear, at 60 - 100, really moves at that point, blinding fast, really big shove in 3rd gear boost.

now where did I put my spoon?

eh? totally can't even understand whats being said in that quote!!

why would a fairer comparison be between cars with equal amounts of power at the flywheel? we're comparing cars here. They're different. That said however I would imagine that the p1 and boggo 20vt could be fairly close though I expecty the p1 might just edge it at the flywheel only by a few bhp. coupe might be about 185. whats the P1? around 200? and whats the problem with this comparison (in English please! )

328i - get serious. the 330i is easily slower than coupe and 328i should be down on that.
as for a Williams Clio, well, me thinks someone doesn't like putting their foot down or can't drive in that case.

I think the later ones had the boost limiter removed in low gears too.

granted they don't feel 'lightening' cos they ain't got it lowdown (til you chip them and even then its not the same feeling as a tuned jap). but the fact remains they're quicker once you're off.

As stated previously you can't just get in them and put your foot down like a scoob etc. you really have to learn how to get the power out usefully. Once you do then its time for the entertainment to begin.

Re the Fiat Coupe, they are pretty quick top end due to areodyanmics but how fast do you have to be going to really leave someone?....120mph+...big deal and licence eating figures
You need to be near 40 to really leave someone.
Mine's chipped. Not found a scoob who wants to play yet! Must change the way I approach them so that they think its slower

I admit I tend to stick to coupe territory (decent roads). I wouldn't try and take a scoob on on a wet bendy lane cos that would be dangerous and more than likely futile

Talking

dhorwich, you're welcome

The problem as always is deciding what factors to compare on. Price? If I recall the 20VT was the best part of 20k as is a MY99/00 so that seems fair. Range? The 20VT is the top of the range UK coupe with the 16VT below, and the 16v, etc. The UK scooby range (classic) went 1.pish, 2.0 sport, 2000 turbo, P1 (granted limited-run but still regarded as the pinnicle of UK scooby ownership). So comparing a 20VT to a P1 seems fair on this count. Better yet, compare the 20VT Plus to the P1

I will say this again just to be sure nobody misses is: I like, and respect and have been in a 20VT However, the real problem with them is that their biggest bag of tricks in straight-line speed from 60mph onwards where they can really punish a lot of cars (especially 4wd). Unfortunately as much as we love our spirited country drives most cars, be is scooby, ferrari, 20vt spend a fair part of their life trundling along the motorway at about 60-70mph. So what happens when the roadworks/slow car/lorry/jcb clears - the 20VT roars past scoobys and suddenly is the king of the road. I suppose its useful to have this ability given that 90% of our driving is under these circumstances but if I wanted top end grunt like that I'd be buying Adam Kindness's 480bhp supra at £13k and wasting nearly everthing! So whats my point you ask? Well, as good as the 20VT is, its not good where I want it to be. I wanted a car that could handle quite well but is crucially very quick through and out of bends and vitually unstoppable in the 30-70 range. This is why I bought the scooby and this is also where it would spank a 20VT. In a straight line the coupe would do well even in a 30-70 but when I'm having 30-70-20-60-40-100-40-80-backwards through a hedge, fun I ain't driving in a straight line or down a smooth motorway.

Great cars, fast, very able, just all in the wrong place IMHO - hence not really comparable at all

maybe its me being 'old fashioned' but i want a car which goes when u put ur foot down!

According to the cars boost gauge its making the correct amount of boost.

The 328 was pulling lengths on him.

Good question about the 30-70

I drive a rover 220 turbo which is a bit like the Coupe with low FWD loses.

30-70 is 5.5 seconds on a Std 220 turbo.

yeah, coupe is about the same, best ive seen is 5.4secs 30 - 70

from the lack of response from scooby owners about 30 - 70, have you guys got something to hide?

is it a little slower? lol
