I have been playing a little on the MX-5 forum:-
http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/mx5forum/default.asp?CAT_ID=2
You 'may' have noticed me a little quieter on here?? Lucky you!!
I have been stirring them up a little you might say. The MX-5 is great fun and a good car BUT as a second/third car in my opinion. When I tell them that, overall, the Impreza is better they get VERY upset and have told me to bu99er off back to YOU lot!!
How can I PROVE that the Impreza IS in fact slightly better than the MX-5??
Any ideas?
Pete

Pete can I have a short back and sides please
seriously though you want to watch out as some of those 5's have turbo and supercharged motors kicking out well over 200BHP, and they weigh considerably less than a pikeys tax return....theyre still gay though but a damn sight cheaper to run/insure than a scoob

I used to own an MX5. I have to say that can out-handle a Scooby. They don't have straight line speed like a Scoob, but they are cheaper to run and don't drink much.
In the Spring / Summer I'd rather drive an MX5.
Thanks

Right enough, they're such similar cars... one must, in absolute terms, be better than the other, but how to choose?
While we're at it, I was wondering if a Playstation is better than a washing machine?
What a ridiculous argument....

Heard Mum talking with the neighbour. She said "Most of the haggling is finished, but the only thing we are arguing about now is who doesn't get custody of Adrian." Poor Mum, this divorce is really addling her brain. I'm sure she meant to say "who does get custody of Adrian."

I've got a slightly improved upon mark 1 jap import MX-5 and its fantastic. I've driven many cars which are much faster (360 Modena and TVR Tuscan as an e.g.) but the Mazda is just so much fun. It handles properly, doesn't know the meaning of understeer, the steering is so direct you can think it round corners and crucially on todays roads, you can have a real laugh down a country road without going over 80mph.
MX-5s and scoobs are totally different cars - I would take a scoob on 95% of journeys (as I do with my other car), but for those other 5% of times when the sun is shining and I'm driving down a good road, there is little which comes close to the Mazda.
Proper sportscars (rear wheel drive and 2 seats) are one of those things that many people dont appreciate until they have driven one. Yeah they have a dodgy image among people who are sadly uninformed but I have never had one person go for a ride in my MX-5 and then proclaim it a hairdressers car

Well said Dave GT.
Scoobies are great to drive. I am a diehard fan and owner.
However the MX5 (I prefer a lowered Eunos) is a fantastic handing RWD sports car. One of the best handling cars ever built but very slow compared to a scoob. You can't really compare as they are so different. Those that slate them don't know much. But good work PS Lewis...keep winding them up

Little Miss WRX - don't know where you got the idea that I had bought a dodgy import!!?? You KNOW I wouldn't be seen dead in any other than a Proper Scooby (A fully UK model!!) OR a Proper MX-5 (and that ISN'T a EUNOS!!)

I was wondering if a Playstation is better than a washing machine?
But depending on spin speed and load capacity the PS2 is better
(I'll get my coat)

Nice to see you have some intelligent people in this forum Pete.
As well as some who have no ability to form a decent informed opinion and just go with inaccurate stereotypes about the mx-5's sexual preference! Drive one and you wont think they are gay.
Now MGF's - thats a gay car!
My 5 is actually an import but some of us did a lot of research.
Im wondering if the criteria is the same for Scooby's as MX-5's for import buying or not.
Im seeing about 170bhp at the mo but its just a work in progress.
Cheers

Mine's an import as well. A lot of the motoring press are of the opinion that imports are a waste of time, but they can represent fantastic deals if you are careful.
I bought my car nearly five years ago. Its a 1990 private plate in red with one inch bigger than standard wheels and Eibach springs which lower the car by 30mm. Its got remote central locking, immobiliser, cd player and air conditioning. Its never broken down and given me 70,000 miles of pure enjoyment. I paid under £6000 nearly five years ago for a car that is stilll worth £4000 yet provided well in excess of £2000 worth of fun. It came with no service history, no manual or any other kind of paperwork save for the log book and MOT certificate but has proved to be fantastically reliable.
On the flip side, before the Mazda I had a full dealer history 18 month old top of the range BMW which turned out to be a complete and utter duffer (how much do we think BMW will lose over my driving life by losing me as a customer at 17)?
Grey import mx-5s do need a proper inspection because they come with no history at all, but not all imports are dogs; if a car has been owned in Japan and then shipped over here after being bought at auction it is not neccesarily a duffer. On the contrary even before adding the wheels and lowering springs my mx-5 was quicker and outhandled many mk 1 UK cars that I drove and played with. It also seemes to sound a bit more interesting and it sat lower than UK cars on its standard springs.
I've never had trouble getting parts or insurance (and I've had it since I was 18) and the pain in the neck 112mph limiter is removed by taking out one screw behind the speedo.

Hi Chris,
where does your 5 leak?
there are a number of easy fixes for the known/common leak spots although if its quite old you have to consider a hood as being a consumable. To be honest leaks are not that common that cant be fixed in 10 mins.
Agreed, two very well put together and very well engineered cars.
Completely different criteria for buying them.

I've had both, Mk2 1.8iS import and 3 Impreza's.
Scoobs were capable. MX5 was FUN. No leak problems whatsoever, you could powerwash the hood.
Either car a fine everyday prospect.
Not all MX5's are bought by hairdressers. Some are keen drivers as well who appreciate the handling and engineering. I'm 6'1" and in the building trade. And no I was not in the Village People.

LOL
We've got a Scoob and an MX-5 - both good cars. The MX-5 is a lot of fun - especially in the summer. RWD and a very nice chassis makes a sweet handling car. But it is no Scoob and it leaks! Wouldn't really compare the two to be honest. I cetainly wouldn't see one as a logical subsitute for the other - although I think you could easilt use an MX-5 as your everyday car.
