If you want a quicker car it's very easy. Just find another £50,000. That's what makes our cars so special - you can't get close to the performance without being a lottery winner.

Not true. You can trounce the performance of scoob or AMG with a cheaper motorbike. You can live with the AMG with less than £10k of kit car. You can equal(ish) the performance of a standard scoob with eg a Focus RS. I love the scoob, but it's arrogant to believe it is that much superior to anything else.

and that's without mentioning evo or Cossies

BTW, the merc is great, but not my cup of tea for that money.

The AMG's are tres quick compared to standard / modified scoobies, I gave up at 130mph and let him by, then I watched as Disco took over the hunt and toasted him, his not so fast car and his electronically limited ego at over 155mph!!! LOL

Oh and Disco didn't win the lottery either

It is possible to travel faster than a scoob in all manner of ways. Several motorbikes, many supercars. If you really think that comparing a motorbike or a kit car is relevant, then we must include a cheap flight to Paris at 500mph, or a train ride on the TGV. The point is, there is almost no competition for a 4 seater car, with Japanese reliability, in this price range.

I doubt me on a moped would live with a scoob. No motorbike licence

You can live with the AMG with less than £10k of kit car.
You have to have six little friends and know a girl named Snow white to get in a kit car and I dont

You can equal(ish) the performance of a standard scoob with eg a Focus RS.
LOL not 280PS classic impreza you cant

I love the scoob, but it's arrogant to believe it is that much superior to anything else.
Best on the market for what I wanted and wanted to pay. So for me it was superior otherwise I would have brought something else more superior with the same money.

and that's without mentioning evo or Cossies
Can you buy a new cossie ?? and EVOs are any option I looked at but isnt wasnt superior for what I wanted .

My boss has got a mercy amg thingy.

It sounds great, goes fast and you can watch the telly at traffic lights.

It's poo in the wet, doesn't land well after a jump (!) and has only got 2 doors.

Oh, and it cost £90,000 pounds.

I've never been quoted five times in one reply before - that's made my day!

Dave - slight backdown from "you can't get close to the performance without winning the lottery" to "almost no 4 seater with japanese reliability at the price" ??

I still think the scooby was the best car for me else I wouldn't have bought it either. It's just that if any car was vastly superior for all uses, no one would ever drive anything else!

We mustn't take things too seriously. It's swings & roundabouts whatever we buy, and almost impossible to draw direct comparisons. In my case, I had no trade-in, and at this price when looking for a car with a snappy accelleration, 4 seats, and no bits dropping off during the first month, the WRX was head and shoulders above the competition. If I had won the lottery, I'd be looking elsewhere, but for a poor slob like me, this is as good as it gets.

Dave - don't take me too seriously, either - no offence, partially stirring, hence the Agree entirely with your last post.

Chrisp what are you saying about kit car drivers and "six little friends"?

The quotes were a bit of fun hence the . I knew what you were saying and were spot on. They arent the best car in the world but every car is compromise in one way or another.

LOL anyone that knows me would realize I would need to kit car one for each foot. I am a bit to big to get into a kit car .

I know where you can get a Noble for about £70, Ferrari for £95 and a Aston Martin DB7 for £85.

Shame it's a raffle

My £10k 'kit car' will eat 280bhp classic imprezas for breakfast......in reverse 330bhp/tonne Vs 215 bhp/tonne. And it averages 25mpg, costs £300/yr fully comp to insure, costs £90/yr road tax, revs to 12500rpm and sounds like an F1 car

Imprezas are quick, but lets not loose sight of reality

true, but then again you'll not impress a gorgeous bird on your hot date if you roll up in your bike-engined kit car

performance isn't everything, unless you only drive it on your own or it's spends 90% of it's life on a track.

SL55 AMG a serious waste of money IMHO.

Buy an E55 AMG for everyday, and buy something for £30k, ie the change, that you can drive rather than it driving you.

Or open a salon and wear pink a lot

Errr. Have you lost leave of your senses. The SL55 AMG is without a doubt the best looking 2 seater on the market at the moment and its fast as cheese. Did you see the epsiode of Top Gear when Damon Hill drove the SL and ?? (cant remember, but it was a out and out race car) the SL wasnt any slower around the test track.

Top car.

Why does somebody always have to bring motorbikes into the performance argument? Can you carry any sensible amount of luggage on a bike? No. Can you really, sensibly, ride one in all weathers? No. Can you listen to the radio on the way to work? No. Can you ride one wearing a suit? No. Thought not.
I have no doubt they are very quick for the money, but as an everyday means of transport they are so impractical. How many bikers have their bike as their sole means of transport?

Bikes do the journey faster but you have to spend 5/10 minutes either end getting into/out of all the gear. Must get hot inside the outfits so I guess a shower each end is required too?

so a 20 minute car journey takes 20 minutes.
the same bike journey takes 10 minutes plus 20 minutes sorting yerself out!

BTW a TVR can be had for 'only' £10k more than a scoob and will whip it's butt (and pretty much anything else)!

(I await the cliche'd mentions of 'twisties' )

It's not reliable or have 4 doors etc. but I thought we were talking about performance, not practicality.

Paulmon

Read what I said in my post, not 1 sentence in isolation.

Oh, and IMHO, it aint that attractive. Engine is superb, the rest of the car shouts I own the salon rather tha work in it!!

AMG engines are improving but quality of finish on Mercs has turned to ****e in the last 10 years, compared to how they once were.

Scoobies are great to drive, especially in the rain. Bikes are great to ride, even in the rain, as long as you don't want to take the golf clubs. I haven't driven one of those Mercs, but I bet thats good fun to drive too, maybe not quite so good in the rain though.

I honestly don't understand what all the fuss is about, just get the machine you prefer and enjoy it instead of worrying yourself to a frazzle about different ones!

true . Gone very down hill. None of the new cars will ever do the miles the older cars can do without major problems and cost.

The best handling cars on road or track are usually RWD. I just find it funny that *every* time someone makes an all out claim that AWD is the best, period. What they don't realise is that there's *much* more to handling than where the wheels are driven.

There are plenty of affordable out of the box performance cars, and a number of those with good afternarket support. Although from the show room, Impreza's are reminiscent of bang for buck cars you can get from the states, and the muscle cars from the 60's and 70's.
