Just seen a 52 registered EVO.....Not my cup of tea
#1
Just seen a 52 registered EVO at my local Mitsi garage 300 yards from my house. Must have been a VII i suppose. I have to admit that having read all the reports recently of the EVO VIII against the prodrive STI i was beginning to wonder if I had bought the wrong car. HOWEVER, one look up close and im convinced I did the right thing. The EVO looked like a toyota corolla or something with a wing stuck on the back. No offense to EVO owners coz they were brilliant and the fastest car I have been in is a friends Tommy Mak jobby, BUT the styling just does not do it for me on the new cars.
Yeah Yeah it may be 1 tenth quicker round 10 miles of welsh mountain roads when driven by the Stig or whoever, but to be honest I aint gonna notice the difference. These cars are meant to be as subtle as a house brick with awesome A to B capabilities. They are both great A - B cars but I think the scooby is still the daddy when it comes to looking the part. As an old Rover driver at work said to me yeseterday, 'did those spoilers come as standard, coz if they did I would pay £1000 to have them taken off' That does it for me, that makes me love it more.
Everyone and I mean everyone looks at me scooby, comments come from all directions and even my 70 year old female neighbour said nice car when i got it.
I just dont think the new EVO's have this wow effect. Im sure they are a great drive but they just dont do it for me. Maybe its time the motoring press had a re-think as to the way they judge cars all the time. The scooby deserves to win 50% of the time at least
Anyone got any comments?
Oh and by the way no offence to EVO owners they are still an awesome car and I would have had a Tommy Mak if they were new now.

There isn't a single word in your post that I don't agree with!!! I feel exactly the same and have also gone for the STi 8 over the EVO and yes, if the Makinnen edition was still a new car then I would of had one of those!
The new EVO's do look like standard saloons with a huge spoiler bolted on as opposed to the more complete and 'integrated' look of the scoob and as good a driver as I like to think that I am, I am unlikely to really be affected by the miniscule differences in performance/handling between the two.

Fanx for the comment EVO. i was beginning to think I was the only person in the world who had that opinion.
Oh and got told at lunchtime by a guy who walked past me house that he saw a load of Iraqui soldiers hide up me exhaust pipe. That made me chuckle as well

Sorry chaps but I saw an Evo 7 and STI8 side by side in a dealers the other day and thought the Evo was the more grown up stealth car. Could never buy the STI8 with that scoop, maybe I'm just an old git but its too max power.

there all ugly the sti8 and the new evo
the older classic scoobys and evos are the nicest, would be nice if subaru just stuck there hand up and said "ok ok you all win, we did **** up bigstyle by releasing that horrible bug eye thing, and were going to try our best to change it back the the way it was with the classic, which is why the rear spoilers and nearly the same nowadays and the new headlamps are going back the way they originaly were"

Theres something about the evo 7. I think they look class. I never thought much to the styling of them at first but it has really grown on me. Maybe the same will happen with the 8 as i dont think much of the new styling over previous models.

But the scoobs are so damned ugly now
I went from a P1 to an Evo as I wanted to do some serious tuning to it & im a hell of a lot more confident doing it to an Evo than a scooby.
Put it this way the Norris Designs Evo with over 600ft/lbs torque runs a standard Evo gearbox & diffs...
Id like to see someone try that with a standard scoob box lol
Stickymicky - I couldnt agree more, but they would never admit they made one of the worst commercial mistakes ever styling wise.
oh - you wouldnt happen to be the owner of SWT would you

Cheers for the replies on this one guys.
It would seem there is a mixed vote, some like the grown up more subtle EVO and some like the 'max power' to use a quote STI.
I guess it is all down to personal opinion, and without people liking different things wouldnt the workd be a boring place. Everyone would drive Street Ka's or something else equally crap.
Only said that coz me mate has one and I cant resist an oppurtunity to take the p*** out of him

I have to say I really don't like the look of the new STI - that bonnet scoop looks plain ridiculous imho.
The Scoob has always been of the 'in your face' school of styling but, much as I hate thinking it, I reckon they just look daft now
It is obviously personal preference, but I've always liked the understated approach.
