Have you thought about a Seat Leon Cupra R. 210bhp FWD, 5 doors, huuuge amount of space inside and very nice looking considering its a Seat. Its basically got the VAG 1.8 20V Turbo engine as per the Series 1 Audi S3 Quattro. A colleague at work has just taken delivery of his in black and it looks very nice indeed. 18's as standard, huge disks and callipers. Worth a look I wreckon if your looking at the CTR and Cooper S. The Seat is the better car IMHO.

gotta ask yourself a few questions,
what sort of driving do you do?
is practicallity important?
is it a second car or how much is it gonna be used?
who else is gonna drive it? (wife?)
running cost important?

As a CTR owner for 18 months, I would have to agree with most of last weeks Autocar's long term test:
Good points:
Superb engine with decent torque, massive revs and superb power.
Brilliant gearbox.
Looks superb.
Practical size.
Fun chassis on smooth roads with excellent balance.
Still attracts glances even after nearly 2 years.
Bad points:
Not so fun chassis on bumpy tarmac. Rear end under damped.
Steering lacks feel. You get used to it but it's never perfect.
Ride very agitated.
Standard interior a bit low rent. Looks good but plastics are thin and cheap.
Standard seats a bit 'bouncy'!
Attracts stone chips like other cars attract insects in summer!
Honda UK a nightmare to deal with if you get problems.

With a kiddie on the way then you will regret a 3-door car after a few months of clambering over the front seats. Seat has got to be the obvious choice IMHO. Just been taken out in a CTR and the thing that really stood out was the fact that it had to be driven hard to feel like it was going anywhere at a reasonable pace. CTR=life in the red zone whereas the Leon Cupra R has torque-a-plenty from tick-over and would be the more grown-up choice considering your circumstances. Best of luck in your choice of car and the imminent little'un.

Just realised that you have a kid on the way! Forget the CTR. It has enough space but getting a car seat in and out of the back is not easy at all. The lever on the seat is stiff, the seats are bulky and the end of the lever always pings off into the shrubbery at least once a week. Getting all the belts sorted is also a complete pain, and the boot isn't big enough for a pram/buggy etc as well as any useful baby paraphenalia. I only ever use mine for kiddie duty occasionally and it's a pain in the neck.
Have you considered the Octavia RS as well? Massive boot and five doors. Reasonable performance and decent handling. Not as driver focused as the CTR or Cooper, but these things will pale into significance when the little one arrives!
