They rev really high and are good untill you have to drive over any gradient larger than a gobstopper then they lose their ability. Only joking, really cracking piece of Jap engineering

It's the old thing ... 190+ BHP, less drivetrain loss, if it's in the right gear then it's pretty even against a **standard** Scoob.
As another poster said, standard Scoobs are not that quick relative to other off-the-shelf cars any more. Even 5 years ago there wasn't the same competition .... sure you had things like the VR6 and Calibra turbos which were fast, but now you've got the CTR, ITR, Audi S3, Tavia vTR and lots of others like the 172 etc.

I had one follwo me around one Saturday afew months ago. Everywhere I went it was behind me. I tried hooning it away but always got caught in traffic. Then I came home to find it sat outside my gate watching my car park at home. The f'ed off but I took the number. It turns out it was an undercover car!

I took one out for a test drive a while back, and I was really impressed. For a front wheel drive car, the handling was excellent. The V Tec engine kicks in at 6000rpm to give an extra grunt and red lines at 8500rpm. Can't really go wrong for the price. £10k saving on my UK300.
150bhp used to be a respectable power rating for a hot hatch. Most hot hatches have 200bhp now.
Civic Type R 198bhp
Astra SRI 199BHP
Seat Leon Cupra R 210bhp

I can totally relate to this. A CTR was behind me the other day and he stuck right to my ****! It pisses me off when people rant how quick Scoobies are because the fact of the matter is they really aint that quick!!! I'm only 21 and am bored with the pace of my MY99 UK Turbo (full decat, induction kit!) already!! Roll on the age of 25 when i get insured on my Dads cars!!

UK impreza turbos are not really that quick anymore in relation to the latest wave of hot hatches.
Clio 172's, Civic Type R's and Seat Leon Cupra R's are as quick in real world driving, are much cheaper to buy and have much cheaper running costs. 4 wheel drive might be great for getting off the line but past 30 MPH it is just extra weight and massive transmission losses.
This has caused the Impreza Turbo to become even more of a niche product now. Years ago nothing else could even come close to that performance for 20K. Now you can get a Civic Type R for £15,995 which is 5K cheaper than the Impreza and won't have the crippling running costs of an Impreza either.

so a "standard" Seat Leon Cupra R with 210 bhp 2wd 6 speed is faster when past 30mph that a scooby! GOD what are all the scooby boys and girls going to do when seat's and astra's are flying past them. in "standard" form...

The Focus RS, Civic Type R and Golf R32 all have significantly better 0-100 times than the WRX. The Leon Cupra R, Audi S3 and Clio Cup are about the same as the WRX. And, of course, the Focus RS can even beat an STi around a track, at least in the dry, as can the new Integra Type R (in Japanese spec).

Yup, my Integra R was faster from 60 onwards than any standard WRX and on a par with my my99 "classic" at the same speeds.

I just bought one 2 weeks ago to keep my ageing WRX STI4 with 350BHP company.
They are a damn fine car IMHO.
Quicker than you would expect, and much better response on the throttle than any turbo car has a hope of.
The thing that amazes me is how well the engine pulls with such low torque figures.
I'd say that a well driven CTR would keep up with an old or new model UK turbo (standard of course). The Scooby driver wouldn't have to try as hard, so I guess the CTR driver would potentially get a more rewarding drive.
Sure the CTR has it's limits, but for £16K (or less) it's excellent VFM.
The engine sounds great on VTEC and is as smooth as silk throughout the rev range.
Oh and it gets between 27 and 38 MPG.
It must be good, because poor old Scooby has only done about 100 miles since I got the new toy!

First post on scoobynet! I've always hankered after an Imprezza since seeing them on the RAC 94 rally.
I am a CTR owner and agree with everything above. I've just started a new business and had complete choice of cars - grins per £ you can't go wrong with a CTR - the VTEC is addictive - it just pulls and pulls. On the test drive I was changing up far too early but soon got used to it!
Allegedy the servicing costs are the same as a base Civic but time will tell. The CTR eats the original tyres (Potenza REO 40s) so there will be £100 a corner soon!
MPG - I'm averaging about 24-25 at the mo but with a 8500 redline what can one expect!!
Cheers all

Nothing really to my STi V6 full de-cat, ecu upgrade etc. let him catch up several times not impressed at all apart from the CTR seemed to brake a lot later. AP brake kit up next.
15K = Mitsubishi Evo IMHO (as i was totally thrashed by one!)

i believe it got the best braking distance of any production car even in the world 44m from 60-0 better a Daiblo..
so what is the 0-100-0 times for these cars
very interesting.. honda 2 seconds quicker than scooby..
Si..

Bloody hell!
I never though I would find a post like this on Scoobynet. For the past 18 months I've been called on here to defend my corner after moving from a MY98 Scooby to a CTR and now after a short absence this
One thing to remember as well is that currently most CTR's are still stock because there just aren't that many decent mods out there yet. A well modded Scooby (particularly JDM spec) will outrun a CTR easily - what's going to happen in two or three years though when there's some good mods out there?
Allegedly there's a CTR turbo already that can do the 1/4 mile in around 11 secs and quite a few of us are looking at NOS kits to supplement the VTEC.

Laurence - No allegedly about it. Saw it at the Jap Meet in Maidstone last week. About 15 of us CTR's inc Coreys T28 turbo'd monster.
Sounds amazing
I'll be keeping the CTR for a couple of years before getting another Scooby or turning to the dark side. Above all its a fun car and haven't regretted buying it one bit
