BMW Compact or Audi A3?

Had an A3 1.8 for 3 years, good solid car, not especially quick, good brakes and lovely build quality. Had NO problems with it at all, it was good on petrol (almost 40mpg on along run), and only used one set of front tyres over 28000 miles !. The boot is a bit small, and rear seats are bit cramped for adults. Extras are hugely expensive (alloys etc..) so get your own after purchase.
Dealers/service were good and efficient.
Can't really fault it and would love an S3 if they weren't so expensive.
Drive the BM compact at test drive time, seemed a bit quicker although I doubt it was, build quality was naff, and dealers treat you like you can't afford a proper BMW. To be honest I wouldn't touch one !!
Audi, for me was the only, and right choice IMHO.

Beemer compact - nicer looking???? Its a 3-series thats had a rear end shunt! Don't buy one, they are shopping trolleys!
I'm afraid to say the TDI A3 gets my vote, the new 130bhp can be chipped to 156bhp with little increase in fuel consumption. The performance is superb, my Golf had it done, you can leave UK scoobs once you are rolling.
If you're doing lots of miles don't buy the petrols, they are thirsty.
(BTW - 5 series is an old man's 3 series!)

Drive them
All the A3's I've driven (most except s3) have dull, lifeless steering, mismached spring/damper rates, terrible cable (??) gear shift action and are very bland cars that handle OK but are not much fun.
not driven a new compact, but must be a better drive

Drove both 318ti and A3 TDi and preferred the A3. Not over a long term just a month each but definately prefered the A3. No major BMW issue for me as I've got a 523 but on that size of Car I prefered the A3.

Paul........
I have a compact, old shape on a 'V' plate.....due for change and will probably go for the new model.......may be a poor man's 3 series but travelling a lot I feel safer with 2 doors rather than 4!! Love it! Only problem will be deciding the colour of the new one!
I must have tried at least 4 other marques before deciding on this one including the A3, if you use it for business present your card and get more than a round the block test drive, I always insist on a FULL day at least.....if they don't play ball I won't buy! simple as that.
