My housemate (scoob_dood) has one. Nice grunt with the V6. Great build quality. Not exactly a drivers car more pipe n slippers refinement with a good helping of power. Watch out for the low ride and weight movement when braking as hes ripped 2 sumps off in the last few months.

I test drove one back to back with a Golf GT TD 130.
I thought the diesel was a better car...

I drive a WRX (with PPP) at the moment, and the V6 just wasn't as quick, yet still has appalling fuel consumption.

If you're used to driving a 4 Cyl car then driving a V6 is often deceptive in that the engine is much less noisy and revvy at the bottom end of the range. The 6's I've driven have all been much gutsier(not a real word ) at the top end. Therefore the overall impression of speed/acceleration is lessened, the only true way to tell is look at the speedo.

Cammy

Used to have one when they first came out, got rid afetr a month, absolute ****e, steering was so light it was a joke, rolled everywhere, looked like any golf and used a lot of fuel for the average performance. Only redeeming features was nice(ish) engine and LOVELY leather recaros.

EDIT - you might want to look at http://www.uk-mkivs.net/

It's no Impreza that's for sure, but if you want an Impreza, you wouldn't be looking at the Golf.

It doesn't attract any attention, it looks like all the other Golfs, and has less bodykit than the GTi's

It's quick enough, though not in Impreza territory it will hold it's own in normal use (safe overtaking, powerful enough to get you out of trouble).

Though it's 4Motion drivetrain is not true 4WD, it gives a good level of traction, and feels very surefooted.

It does have soft suspension, this can be rectified if you want, so far I don't feel it's necessary, but if you want to use it for the track, or want it to be more of a GTi them you will want the VW Sports pack at the very least, and probably Bilteins etc if you want more.

I have had 2 replacement sumps since buying the car in July '02 - this was down to soft suspension, a low slung engine with Alu sump and my own stupidity when approaching a ramp/folded bollard (in that order).

It does a steady 25mpg average (over 2000 miles of motorway/a-road/city/cross country) and will happily do 30+mpg on the motorway.

Insurance for me, 25/5yrsNCD/3pts was £800 with protected NCD

Costs so far: 2 sumps (see above) £500

Summary: It's not a GTi .... it's not meant to be! Nor is it an Impreza beater (performance wise). Not a car that everyone will want or love, but I test drove this against a 1.8T GTi and this won hands down, for me.

Hope this was useful feel free to email me for details, or reply to this ...

- Jon

Thumbs up

"Does anyone have any comments about this car."

Spooky!

As it so happens I had a run in with one this afternoon...

Some guy came screaming up behind me in one this afternoon on a dual carriageway as I was on my way home and started hassling me. He sat there for a few secs before dropping it and undertaking me.

So, naturally I gave chase.

Wasn't as quick as I thought and to cut a long story short, I out dragged him twice from some lights, then he ended up going on the motorway in the same direction as me and he tried it on again, so I persued and then passed him.

My car is a mildly modded 306 Rallye with 151bhp @ wheels (179bhp @ fly) and I was quite pleased.

They may have 204bhp, but they weigh 1400kg and the transmission gives quite a lot more loss than a fwd. Compared to my Rallye weighing in at only 1163kg and having 179bhp, plus a more efficient drive train, means I had the advantage.

Nice cars though.

EDITED: Surely your car is still slower than a 306 GTi 6 though ?

... No it seems! Sorry ... I guess mildy tuned, you would be seeing <7 secs 0-60 ? Book time for the V6 is 7.1

As mentioned before, the V6 isn't a GTi .. though it sounds this the guy you encountered thought it was !

scoob_dood -

The Rallye is faster than the GTi-6 as standard anyway...

Stats:
Power - 167bhp
Weight - 1163kg
0-60 - 6.9secs
0-100 - 19.2secs
Speed - 140mph

The Rallye is a second faster then the GTi-6 to 100mph as standard and a lot of people don't know what they are.

In a recent edition of CCC a standard 306 Rallye was faster round a track than a standard CTR, so not to be underestimated.

Our man in his Golf obviously didn't know...

Pug GTI Forum

lol!

Yeah I found some stuff on the GTi-6/Rallye so answered my own question.

I wouldn't compare the Rallye to the V6 either, if I took all the luxury goods off the V6, it would probably shed a couple of hundred kgs

A lot of people suggest that the 4WD loses lots of power due to transmission loss, but the Golf uses Haldex and this is less of a problem (from what I understand). In the main the car is front wheel drive, only using the rear when necessary.

I very much doubt that anyone would go out and look at these two cars when buying ...

Forgot to mention...

I was suprised actually, but pleased.

The Golf is a very heavy car though, which is it's downfall.

Power-to-weight:

306 Rallye - 143.6bhp/tonne
My Rallye - 153.9bhp/tonne
Golf 4Motion - 145.7bhp/tonne

Then, there is the transmission loss to account for. Or apparently not now!

One of the guys in my office has a 4Motion in silver and I do like them a lot. But, like you say, not a GTi.

LOL

The Rallye is "purposful", not full of toys...

But, I've already had my leather and all the electric stuff, so I am not bothered with the Rallye as it's so enjoyable to drive.

I hope it's not a GTI.... the standard 1.8T GTi is slow as a week in the jail sharing a cell with bubba

Apparently there's going to be an advert for the new reebok trainers with the "bye bye GTI" slogan

This only applies to the new golf... I know the older ones and Pugs etc are still decent!

or you could buy an R32.

Drove one yesterday, totally different to drive than Scooby. You dont get the initial kick but the speedo is always higher then you expect. Unlike other Golfs the R32 does not roll at all/ Superb build quality too and a worthy competitor to the WRX me thinks especially as similar money. For your 22k you get met paint, Recaro type seats, climate, 6 CD, PS, EW, CL, Aluminium trip(not plastic), 18inch OZ wheels, automatic dipping rear view mirror, heated seats, Cat 1 alarm, tints, Xenon headlamps, headlamp washers, dual exhausts and.....

cupholders!!!

I've ordered one so obviously biased but having driven it I was quite impressed. Mind you, anyone who knows me knows that I was beaten round the Nurburgring by a girlie!!!!

What's the delivery time for the R32. I was quoted Jan 2004 from the local dealer.

Had a test drive in the v6 4motion and it felt a bit soft - nice engine though. Also they wouldn't let me take it off the A road (dual carriageway)as they didn't want to get it dirty!

Saw an R32 on the road this morning - very nice looking car. Shame the dealer wouldn't let you take it of the A road! Must have been scared you'd be disappointed by the handling!

Standard is basicly a de-tuned 1.8T and easy to sort out the handling - for £1000 you can make it handle properly and have over 200 bhp and 220+ lbs of torque. not too many other hot hatch's that can say bye bye...

the R32 has Bilsteins and H&R springs (Exactly what i have)i here and its getting pretty good reviews for handling. if u get a 4 motions and just change the springs and dampers EASY !

There ain't much wrong with the R32 handling I can assure you. Sat behind an STI on the 2 hour test drive through the lanes and the Golf didn't shame itself at all.

Face it boys - The days of the Scooby are dead :-)

The new kings of the road are going to be RS Audi's, GTA's etc. Scoob was the best car I've had but with build quality rivalled only by Kia and Proton they need to get their act together. Other cars have simply caught up and offer similar performance for similar money but with much better build quality/service schedules etc.
