My other half needs a car but we have bugger all money to spend on one!! He's looking for an XR2 or similar cause he used to have one. Anyone got any ideas for another cheap car or is anyone selling one?!

You and your cheap to buy and run cars....
Lots of questions to be asked here, is it for just him to run around in, or will you and young 'un be wanting to squeeze in too. Commuting, weekends only??? Fill in a few more details like that and I'll blast you with a whole load of cheap suggestions.
I was thinking of you and the Cavalier the other day, remember my suggestion of a Xantia, I saw a well cheap one go through the ring the other day, 1.8 N-reg Xantia, 47k miles FSH silver £1250. How's the Cavalier doing though, hope its proving reliable and more importantly cheap to run.

It's mainly just going to be a cheap run around for him, to and from work (approx 6 miles round trip!) at the weekends and evenings! Doesn't have to be particularly practical cause we have the Cav, which is running really well and fuel bills are amazingly cheap (like the insurance!!). What else?! We are looking at only a couple of hundred quid cause we have bought a house and all the cash is going to the solicitors, surveyors etc!!!
Thanks for replying, good to hear from you!! Hope you are ok?!

Red - the XR2 in for sale is superb - they are really great cars, faster than people think, and the engine is p1ss easy to work on. For £900 he cant go wrong.
PS I know you have posted on there already.

Pathetic as it sounds, even £900 is out of our price range (just spoken to him)!!!! He really has got to get a motor soon though!

If i was after a cheap shed i'd buy a mark 2 golf anyday. Ran a few now, they don't tend to rust, parts are cheap and you can stick gti bits on if you can afford it. I bought a e reg mk2 tour special edition (1800 carb) for £200 with 6 months mot. It would do 110mph and lasted me fine. I threw it away when the MOT ran out or you could've had it...

I've bought plenty of 'cheap runabouts' over the years and to be honest, the best place to find them is in the 'yellow paper'. Ad trader or something IIRC.
Also check the autotrader site for an idea of prices.. just set the search criteria to 20 mile radius, max 500 quid and you'll no doubt find some garage that have a few trade in cars that they'll happily sell you at auction prices.
You'll easily get something decent for about 400 quid. My best was an old 1.1 nova saloon for just over 200 hundred that lasted me for a year, cost pennies to run and insure and all i had to replace was a clutch cable (6 quid in change from an astra belmont in a scrappy).

Get a Peugeot 309, I ran one for ages that I bought for 140 quid, lovely to drive, not fast (1.3) but handling was better than Escoprts and the like, rusts less than my MK2 Golf GTI, gearchange is superb, cant really fault it, my dad is using it until he decides what to buy for 15k
He really rather likes it, try Carsurvey.org before you buy anything

Have a look in Find it as there is a section in cars called bargain cars. May have some good deals in there.
Failing that, look in your local paper and you will get loads for a couple of hundred quid!

Cheers. It's car day in the local paper so i'll have a squizz! Thanks for the Micra suggestion but that one is a big NO! He used to drive his ex girlfriends and he hated it. Don't think he'd get one by choice!!!!!
He's now had the bright idea of getting a Capri!
