Duratec 2.5 V6 in Noble M12
#1
hiya,
Does anyone know exactly what Noble do to these engines? I know they have two garret T25 turbo's but I am more interested in the
internal strengthening etc.
And... does anyone know of anywhere in the UK that can do this sort of work?
ta,
Matt

I think from memory Mountune build them, the ones used in the Nobles are stripped & significantly altered, in the crank/rod/piston area. But I do know they do an aftermarket turbo conversion for that motor also.

Mattski,
Sorry to hijack your thread, but I wanted to ask you a question regarding the 2.5 V6 engine. I have just bought a 2.5V6 Mondeo Ghia X - similar engine tuned to I think about 170BHP.
The question I have is - Do you ever get a feeling the engine is being artificially retarded. e.g. you gun off from the lights, the engine revs quickly and then at about 4000rpm, it suddenly slows down rapidly. The revs still climb, but much slower - then until you switch the ignition off the car just seems to have no get up and go in any gear. On switching off and starting again, it seems to reset whatever it is, and the car is rapid again.
I am a bit perplexed, as there is no warning lights etc coming on and the traction control isn't on. Just wondered if you had this problem in the ST24?
Hope you don't mind me asking?
Thanks,
Jamie

Yup - thats the one.

Ahh, O.K. Mine doesn't do it but I have heard of a few things that can cause problems etc. Some things that may help are, although I am not sure if your problem will be fixed:
1. There is a phenomenon called 'throttle hang' where the car feels as tho it is very slow to drop revs when changing gear etc. This is due to Ford keeping emmissions down by keeping the revs up or something. The fix is to change an air pipe, check out this site:
http://www.contour.org/mods/mods.cgi...y=throttlehang
I haven't done this mod yet but I shall as it apparently makes a big difference.
2. There is a 'secondary mass' crank damper in the Duratec V6, it comes into play when you boot it and get to about 3200rpm, i.e. the secondary throttle bodies open and away you go. I wonder if it's a problem with that? Not sure how they work but it might be worth checking out this URL:
http://www.spmotorsports.com/contour..._dualmass.html
SP do some pretty cool stuff, check em out.
3. Apparently cleaning both the 'secondaries'/LIM (lower intake manifold) and the UIM (Upper Intake Manifold) can make a huge difference, there is quite a lot of talk about polishing them and the throttle body. I am going to do it when I get chance. Good info here:

No, don't have that one dude.. the only thing I do have and need to get looked at is a pretty yucky feeling gearshift. Might be worth joining the 'ST Owners Club' - http://www.stownersclub.com

No, not at all

Matt,
I think it is defo the secondary's - I had a look on www.fordmondeo.org - seems the most likely offender.
I think the car has been laid up for a couple of months and they have got gummed up - because there is no way that I am getting a power surge to hang onto at 4000 rpm!
Thanks
Jamie

Mattski,
John Noble Motorsport in Chesterfield build the engines.
If you go up there I'm sure they'll show you round.
Think he said they run v low boost - 7psi I think and just taking it to 9 gives another 30+ hp.

Hi Craig,
Long time no speak dude, how's your beastie?
Thanks for the info, I spoke to Mountune about having some work done, sounds like there are quite a few options. I shall check out your info.
cheers,
Matt

Jamie,
I used to have a V6 GhiaX, the dual length intake system failing is a common problem. Even when its working correctly you can sometimes feel a moments hesitation at around 4000rpm when the system operates. I used to notice most with a medium throttle in third gear.
Never had it fail to switch though.
The changable intake length systems always seem to be a bit of a black art. Never any info about how the systems work, although I understand the principle.
I have an Alfa now and its described as having variable intake geometry rather than dual length intake, Alfa's system works in conjunction with the variable valve timeing and there is a massive step in engine noise and performance around 3750rpm. Autodelta do a chip which changes not only alters fueling and ignition but also VVT and Intake geometry so it would seem the intake length is under the control of the engine management.
