Question

Someone I respect a great deal for his car knowledge has suggested that I use Shell Optimax and Millers Octaine Booster in my 3.0 X-type...

I used Optimax in my WRX but then again the car was supposed to run on super unleaded... and I occassionally put the odd tank of super in the MX5 ...

I would love to use it in the X-type but I just want to be 100% sure it will be okay.... if it is okay... could a total switch be alright and not do any damage, or should it be every alternate fill or just once in a while....

opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
P

Just use whatever fuel you fancy, thought a higher Ron rated fuel such as Super Unleaded or Optimax wil make it run better. I wouldn't waste your time with Octane booster - a waste of money on an X-Type.

Thumbs up

IMHO, I wouldn't bother with the extra cost of SUL / Optimax in the X-Type, unless it specifically states it in the owner's CD / manual.

It will have been designed to run on normal Euro-average unleaded fuel, which can be 91 octane, so any difference in power output will be extremely marginal, I would guess. I'd save the 5p+ per litre and spend it on beer & tabs

I put optimax in my 1991 Saab 9000 and it ran smoother, slightly more power and better economy - so I would guess that an X-type with modern ECU will take advantage of it.

Forget about octane boosters though !

Only ever used the Octane Booster in the MX5 (1.8i) if the fella on the pump couldn't understand my version of Spanish (Spanglish) and put 95 RON into it. Reckon it went much better on the higher stuff though and couldn't see the point of adding booster to the 97/98.

Didn't really matter which I used but the price differnce for a tank full was negligible considering fuel was under 1/2 the UK price. Although I did find she felt better after being filled at BP/Shell statiosn rather than the local Cepsa station.

Mark 'Pipe and Slippers' O uses Optimax in his X-Type. Get's slightly better MPG IIRC.

P,

To be honest you'll be fine on normal unleaded. There are plenty of these at work, and some have done 50k hard miles in under a year on NUL, and have had no probs. If you really need the extra couple of bhp and potential piece of mind shoudl the unthinkable happen to the engine, then SUL is probably for you. Forget about boosters though, as they would be a waste of money. The Cat does not need 98RON + in order to perform well!

Cheers

Matt
