How much for a Ferrari Dino?
#2
Bob,
That'll be for the 308GT4 Dino. For a 246 Dino you can expect to pay about £50k upwards for a good one. The 308 was a Carburetted V8 and was the forerunner to the Mondial. Styling was by Bertone, and some thought it ugly.

You might get a very tatty 308 GT4 for that money which was badged a Dino, though obviously built by Ferrari. Dino Ferrari was in his life and death Enzo's son, Enzo to remember his dead son built a range of cheaper cars carrying the Dino badge. Though when you think about a Dino Ferrari its the rather lovely 206/246 GTS's thats spring to mind. For the 246 GTS it is a completely different ball game at about £40k.

There was a great article in Car a few years back about buying / owning a 308 GT4. Great way to own a genuine Ferrari cheap, but make sure someone else has spent the money first ....
Even if you buy someone's pricey restoration, budget at least £1500 per year for servicing & consumables. They need a clutch every 15K, discs and pads cost the earth and you can't just raid Fiat's parts bin, apparently ....

In the mid 1990s you could pick up a 246 Dino for around £35k. Now it's more like £60-70k. Slower than most modern GTis, and need coaxing into life when you start them up. If money was no objet, I still think I'd have one.

"Enzo to remember his dead son built a range of cheaper cars carrying the Dino badge"??????
Dino opened his own design / tuning house and manufacturing plant. That's where the Dino badge came from. It was later absorbed into Ferrari again.

Dino Ferrari died in 1956, therefore it has to have been Enzo that built the cars using his son's name. Dino may have founded a seperate company but he ceratinly didn't build any of the cars that carried the Dino badge.

Dino worked on developing the V6 'Dino' engine, that started out in the 206 and later the 246, IIRC. 246 Dinos are strictly not Ferraris, and shouldn't carry Ferrari badges anywhere (just a 'Dino' scripted badge on the bonnet), but nobody seems to mind if you stick a prancing horse badge on

I really fancy a Ghibli Cup, and conveniently I don't live far from Bill McGrath. But £4k+VAT for each turbocharger puts me off a bit, as does the 'engine out' timing chain change every 24k miles

WOW, good answers guys, thanks
Basically we were chatting about cars at work, saying how we fancied buying summat old but which was good in it's day so to speak, having a few hundred quid in an XJS was mentioned then Office Smartarse chipped in with "you can get a Dino for 10 grand".
I never picked him up on his point, he'll be thinking of the 206/246 one but will worm his way out till he gets to the 308
Cheers

Hi Carl,
Top guys at Bill Mcgrath
They look after my car and even though they are really busy they will always sort something out if you are stuck.
I don't even want to contemplate mine needing an engine rebuild, it would sit in my garage for a long time ( while I saved up!

Check out a copty of Classic & Sportscar, it has a pretty good price guide. They probably have a buyers guide in an old edition that may be worth investing in
Great looking cars, never driven one thou.
i would get an 'expert' to look at it first before payingh out hard earned cash - 10K sounds cheap.
