The cars you mention have 2 seats only. For a weekend / fun car, there are better choices; the ones you have mentioned are relatively slow.

I'd say:

Fun car: a Scorpion or a Dax or something (under 4s to 60)
4 door: Lancer Evolution 7 Extreme S (4.5 to 60)
2 door: turboe'd and LSDed Toyota MR or Civic Type R

Thumbs up

Personally I'd go for the Boxster S or consider an older 911

Have you thought about the Nissan 350Z? 2 door, 2 seat, very quick, stunning looks and soon to be on sale for 22k.

Honda S2000. As fast as a porker S and £5 - £10k cheaper I think. And also exclusive, porkers, slks, bmw's are everywhere.

I've got one so any questions, fire away.

Don't go to a Porsche dealer with that sort of money for a 911, there are loads of specialists out there that will do you a much better deal.

Running a Porker is no more expensive than an Impreza IMHO.

Yep i agree with the guys above, 911 definitely. Dont buy it from a Porsche dealership as they rip you off! Better luck in exhchange and mart or autotrader!

OK then, a Civic Type-R. Best of all worlds, plus sell it in 'X' amount of time, and get good residuals (god that sounded old!).

Evo 7 for the weekend car though

Must admit I am thinking of a carrera 4 as my RA replacement but may take a 350Z for a run first

Different image but good performance and reasonable prices?

Paul,

I came out of a P1 and into a new M3, I need 4 seats for the wife and kids. If I were you I'd go for the Boxster S, it may not be as quick as an Evo7 or some of the other bespoke "weekend" cars but as an all round package and for residual values it probably can't be beaten.

T3RBO,

How can you say that the 911 is more refined? have you driven both back to back? what are your reasons??

I was dissapointed when i chased a Boxter S. I thought he was gonna leave me for dead. Through the corners it was even steven but onto the straight i found i had to let off the load peddle to keep a safe gap. I figured he wasn't trying, but after investigating the spec for an S i found they aren't as fast as i thought. Still, they seem a great all round package and the sound track ain't bad.

Boxter S only 240bhp!...just a bit more than a std Scoob...a few easy mods the Std scooby can push 240+ bhp easy..plus better handling!?

Word of warning.
All this talk of great residuals of the Boxster is a bit misleading.
A friend of mine paid £41,800 for a brand new car in Apr01. The supplying dealer offered him £28k for it and he had absolutely no interest privately at £32k whatsoever.
You're probably asking the wrong people as I'm sure you said you wanted away from the whole Subaru/rally thing. I have similar feelings myself as I'm becoming bored. I'm sure this happens with whichever fine piece of hardware you have. My personal gripe is main dealers in general. Even if you receive good service should you really expect anything less? Extortionate new prices, expensive servicing, poor residuals (more or less everything) inflated second hand forecourt prices. Time to buy a well used and 'fastidiously maintained' older vehicle me thinks. Not much chance to have a blast these days anyhow. I think that getting from A-B in comfort with a bit of style is my new aim. Time to slow down and accept the inevitable.
I suggest.....
1. SL320 merc 1995 model
2. BMW528i + loads of expensive toys apid for by someone else
3. Volvo S60 2.0T m-way journeys will seem like fun

Yep I'd go for the S2000. Top value for money.

Not as quick as a Civic Type R? Civic has 200BHP, S2000 240BHP.

Tried my MY00 against a mates S2000 from a standing start up to about 100MPH (on Isle Of Man) and nothing in it.

Cheers,

Ian.

I'm afraid you are talking complete b*ll*cks

The engine is not the same at all, S2000 revs to 9500, civic does not, civic also uses the new i-vtec. Check the 0-60 times - S2000 5.5 - Civic 6.8 - Boxster S 5.9. The engine in the S2000 was created to celebrate Hondas 50th anniversary and is very special indeed.

In terms of the Porsche comparison I would take the Honda every time. Remember a Boxster S is £41000 without options, an S2000 is £26000 fully loaded.

Handing is a subjective thing, but personally I prefer the challenge and involvement of a rwd setup, don't get me wrong I love the Subaru, but for me there is no comparison in terms of driver involvement.

Sound like you need to drive an R or an RA with the diff wound to the back.

The VTEC are great motors amd remain great for 30 miles and then become tiring. I want something with a shed load of torque from 2000rpm not having to wait till 6000rpm. Okay if you are on a track and never let it drop below 5000rpm but everyday road driving not for me.

Boxster S anyday. It's the sort of car where the longer you drive it, the better it gets. The controls in porsches - steering, brakes etc are still the best of all cars I've driven. They don't give the same turbo-charged adrenalin hit you get after 30 seconds in a scoob, but provide a better overall driving experience (IMHO).

Yes, you will pay more at a porsche dealer, but you know what you're getting - peace of mind. My boss had an accident in his old boxster, did £20K+ of damage. When time came to sell it, no porsche main dealers would touch it, but that didn't stop an independent porsche dealer from buying it and marking the price up by £5k.

Gary.
