Yep the twin cam is a better engine. They cost a little more but they make a little more power. Even though they have 2 cams they are still only 8 valve though The twin cam is now popular for putting into mark 2 escorts etc

My dads got this engine in his sierra. It has done 185,000 miles with no problems, and it doesnt burn any oil either. All he's changed is the cam chain, which is recomended, and a regular oil service.

I have a '92 2.0GLSi and it's a top car/engine.

Not going to set the worl alight, but excellent for everyday use.... and I was told you don't have to change the cam chain ... just the tensioner .. ?

Yes the 2 litre 8V twin cam is better than the SOHC Pinto. But that is only like saying the Mk5 escort was better than the Mk4, either way they were both hopelessly outdated, under-developed pieces of dead weight

Ford also based the Mk5 RS2000 16V engine on that block rather than the Zetec. so, if you find one of them, you can convert it to suit a RWD configuration.

Having said that, just on the number of cams and valves, it might still be chaeper to rebuild/tune a pinto. but they are heavier - I think!.

Which one is better??? Depends on what you want.
For power and tuning, the twin cam is pretty crap. For reliability and economy, then the twin cam is better, but it does need looking after.
Timing chains will need changed ( approx 100K ) and regular servicing. The twin cams also are fond of doing head gaskets/cylinder heads. But again, one that has been looked after will give very good service.

Pintos will also go for a very long time, even without regular maintenance. They arent as economical, but are generally reliable. Cams are the main thing that wears out, and the cam followers do get noisy and need adjusting. Pintos are better for tuning too, as they have been around forever, and are very robust. They also respond very well to turbocharging. I recall an article from a long time ago, comparing turbo technics style kits on both a twin cam, and a pinto. The pinto was a lot quicker.

yes, you are right callum as the car engine has been modded by an add on turbo kit, and runs a 5th injector ecu, it doesnt have a rev limit anymore can drive right thro the factory 6100 rpm, in-doing so i reach over 7400rpm in 4th gear giving a good top speed and reasonable 1/4 mile and ended up melting 1 piston and blowing 4 big ends as well,

but all repaired now with another engine and turbo rebolted back onto it again

Neil

and here is the damaged piston

Cool

Cool.
Glad it's back on the road again...
Mind if I ask the price of the mod and who carries it out?

Exclamation

Neil XR,

That is exactly what one of my Saab turbo pistons looked like after a high speed run at silly boost. I am blaming a weak mixture on that cylinder. The other three were perfect, as were all the bottom ends. I've rebuilt another engine, got water injection and another 4 fuel injectors to hopefully sort it out. Currently looking around for a bigger turbo and intercooler.

Do you know what exactly caused your meltdown?

Callum

i bought the full car for 1200 quid in March in nottingham, it was converted by turbo technics in july 1990 at a cost of 2490 quid when car was new, and it has lasted 12 years on orginal unmodded engine

bought another engine for 20 quid and clutch for 70 quid and swapped it myself

Musafa

i think my problem was the long run at boost in 4th going over the rev limiter by so much and running compression of 10.5:1 didnt help either, the car has an intercooler and 5th injector was well, plus the standard ford n/a set up

I see you have the original manifold too.
Have you thought of uprating the exhaust .....?

I have a Janspeed Manifold (4-2-1) and Scorpion s/s system from the Janspeed to the backbox.
I also have a K&N tray filter with a homemade induction kit and I get just under 8 sec 0-60.

May be the way to go?

Callum

P.S. I have a spare Scorpion s/s backbox if you are interested?
My car's lowered and after a few speedbumps (and fat passengers) it scraped the centerbox to the point that there was a hole in it.
I got a new replacement ... only Scorpion sell it complete - not in sections. So I still have the new back box wrapped in the delivery plastic and never used (3" outward rolled Tpipe)
