To replace my Terzo while I find the something better, I've just bought a pristine 1995 V6 Cavalier with manual gearbox. Everything about it is sound and it appears quite fast for a car of this age.

Has anyone got any details on bhp / torque / mods etc? as I am thinking about lightly modding it to improve performance and handling.

Make sure the cam belt has been changed, these cars are powerful but under stated, you can chip them, change the filter take the cat off should get around 200 bhp.standard form is about 170 bhp same lump as the 2.5 vectra sri but suspension is not up to scratch.

Thanks Boot,

The Cam belt has been changed in the last 10k miles. I'll definatley get a filter and look into the decat as it'll be good to suprise a few people on the road.

Standard was wither 170 or 167 bhp, depending on which quotes you believe. Torque again 170 or 167.

Had a V6 Calibra for a while, nice car in many ways. K&N filter element very easy - it takes the same element as the SRi 16Vs. The V6 works very well with a superchip - improves throttle response, drivability etc. Allegedly chip+filter gave 185bhp. Flywheel is very heavy, would imagine it's nice to lighten it.

Handling transformed - up to fairly reasonable - with sticky tyres (I used Yokohama's), though nowhere near scooby levels. Brakes felt good in normal use, but went to mush after 3-4 laps on a trackday. Turning the traction control off and using a well modulated right foot, (together with trail braking to cure understeer) was worth a couple of seconds a lap, too.

Chipped etc it will give most people a surprise, especially at higher speeds. If you want to get serious, IIRC regal do a 270bhp supercharger kit, something like £3.5k fitted, but should be fun. Courtneys would do a lot more still if you want to throw silly money at it. Saw them do an alleged 400bhp+ 3 litre twin turbo 6sp in a Calibra once.

Cheers Hades,

Some good info and tips. I'm not sure if the old bird is up for track-day duty, but 185-190 bhp seems an ideal target. I'll also be looking for new tyres as the old ones are a bit mix and match.

As it is I now have a bit of spare money from the Scooby sale...
