KENT CAM OR CHIP
#1
I AM LOOKING TO BUY A CLIO 16V. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT A KENT CAM WOULD BE A BETTER WAY TO GO THAN GETTING A CHIP. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHICH WOULD MAKE THE MOST DIFFERENCE. CHEERS.

If it's stock you want to improve the breathing, exhaust and air filter.
A cam will give the most gains, usually anywhere from 5-15 bhp a chip on it's own will give 5 max, if that and sort out any flat spots.
Ideally do your performance modes, exhaust, filter cams, then have it chipped, make sure you get a chip that can be mapped on a rolling road, not a plug in a play type.

kung fu ---- Where did you learn how to tune? Uprating to fast road or race cams increase alot of power, and this is one of the very few principle things race engineers do to naturally increase maximum power output after increasing displacement. There are aftermarket cams that increase decent levels of max and mid range HP without making it too undrivable.

Cam definately.
Chip.. cant see what extra you'd realistically get on a 16v like this 5-10bhp? tops through otimising the ignition advance??
Will a Cam give that much more power for the cost... I suppose that said its fairly cheap power wise as these cars are so cheap anyway (no offence)
Presumably you already have the exhaust and filter in mind.. which would be the first step in releasing the potential of the cams

If you've got the cash, removing the entire inlet system and replacing it with some decent throttle bodies (try Jenvey.co.uk) would give very good gains. You'd need to fit an aftermarket ECU to map to suit this, so all in, not cheap. Say about £1500+, but you could well get 25-30bhp plus a great induction noise.
Also gives you the capability to remap and to get the best out of all future modifications. Aggressive cams, throttle bodies and exhaust, well mapped, (say £2.5k all in) it's relatively straightforward to see 200bhp out of a 2 litre 16v Vauxhall/Ford, so I imagine you could do similar with the renault, unless it breaks easily . That would be quite rapid in a car that small and light.

yes....they increase power, but before i would put one on, i would get the head flowed, lighten & balance the flywheel, bottom end etc... a cam on it's own, on that size of an engine isn't going to make a big difference!

To many max power magazines me thinks.
Why go to the trouble and cost of completely stripping the engine for little or no gains. When is a case of cam cover off, inlet cam out, exhaust cam out new ones in, job done and all for the price of the cams circa £150 and a rocker gasket. A fully balanced and blueprinted engine is only warrented if your going for major power. Cams will be sufficent for your average McDonalds racer

kung fu --
If that's the case, why not go all out and plant a larger motor inside?
Saying a cam change isn't worth it alone when it comes to making big power from a small engine is an obvious thing, but he was asking what is better for his needs, a cam OR a chip - alone.
