A3 1.8T Sport 150bhp standard, more recent models get 180bhp
(around 195-200bhp with chip)

S3 1.8T originally 210bhp, but 225bhp from 2002 MY
(approx. 250-260bhp with chip)

..or maybe at 120 he thought "god I'll lose my licence at this speed and backed off?

Ian
(a 1.8T driver that decided not to back off, and sat equal distance right up to (a high speed ) with a lightly breathed on UK turbo, my licence is now 3points heavier and my wallet £60 lighter)

Question

Thought I'd join the banter...Hello all

I in my '99 UK Turbo on motorway last nite, doing 100mph and then see car tailing me - I floor it to 120mph and couldn't shake him off - thought speed was enough so pulled into middle lane and he shot past me! It was an A3 1.8T - how fast are them blimming things?

Oh and yes I was ripping it on a completely empty motorway at 2am - any PC drones can **** off!

The Audio A3 1.8T Sport are not that quick. I think they are only 150bhp. The later ones might be quicker though.

If you were "ripping it on a completely empty motorway" then why were you in the outside lane to start with?

150bhp, same engine as Golfs, Passats and A4's, but geared to be quicker off the line (0-60 = 7.9). Used to have a Passat 1.8T, would do 140 in a straight line, but handled liked whisked eggs once the wheel was turned!

i aint really into modifying - but may need to think that one over again!

at that sorta speed you shoot past the odd granny or two hogging the other lanes, so I stick to the outside lane!

So what mods would get me to 143mph (the top speed?) quicker and how much will it cost?

Totally depends on *which* 1.8T and if it has been modded.

A simple remap will see 195 from an early 150 bhp 1.8T.

The later VVT unit, dependant on injectors and 2nd gen K03 turbo can see 220 quite easily.

It could have been a quattro (1.8t Quattro, not S3) and will have less transmission losses than the scoob as at those speeds the Haldex is virtually FWD.

had a nice burn with an Audi TT a couple weeks back on an empty stretch of dual carriagway. He blasted off in front of me and I had to go after him didnt I! Scooby reputation to uphold after all.

I caught him up and he moved over at 120mph. I obviously had to then pass him and hit 140 mph. Audi TT - good looking car but no match for the scoob!!

caught at 145 mph = instant ban!

I knew i was ok, no cars visible ahead or behind and no cameras and radar detector on...

Good thing these cars get to these kinda speeds and then slow down again so quickly.

Well, the impreza pulled off and I slowed, passed an unmarked car and was pulled over. Lets just say the police were very fair with me, and I will not break 80 these days.

Unhappy

thats really bad luck! So the scoob got away scot free. Bummer.

Unmarked police cars are a problem. I never put my foot down unless the road is completely clear, that way if anything happens its only me that will suffer. And when it comes to urban areas i never exceed the limit by more than 5 mph. People driving at 40-45 mph through town are in my opinion more dangerous than me doing 100+ mph on a 2/3 lane road with no other cars around (except the car i might be racing!)

I dont find the 1.8T cars very quick, mate has an Octavia 1.8T and that is no quicker from a standstill than my Golf (88 8 valve with a few mods), the Passat is slower, The A3 has a very slight edge.

In fact its cars with this engine that always seem to try and prove a point !

A chipped A3 1.8T realistically will push out 195-205bhp with the latest remaps from APR. Bearing in mind they weigh 1150kg and are very aerodynamically sound, they shouldn't have a problem staying with scoobs in a straight line.

A standard one would certainly struggle against an old model Scoob!

Cool

Could have been a Quattro - aren't they 180bhp same as TT?

i had an A4 1.8T Sport, nice and smooth, pulled well on motorway but nowhere near as quick as my old Scoob

Thumbs up

cheers lads - so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised - I've nailed a few from a standstill start to say 60 - but different story at 100+ speeds!

If you get caught doing 145 mph then I think you'll be facing more than just a ban!

I'm sorry I ain't politically correct, I don't think speeding is a sin but any prat that does 130+ mph on a motorway in the dark is a lunatic!

Reason ? Well what happens if the half of someone's exhaust is in the lane ? or a fox is running around ? believe me it happens and if you hit something like that then you are going to be history.....BIG TIME!

yeah.....losing your life was worth it just to beat an Audi S3
....do you really have such an inferiority complex ? Does it matter that much ?

go to http://www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/frames.htm click on death on the left hand side and read the account, come back and tell me you don't give a monkeys about doing 145 on a public road.

If you wanna race at those speeds then go to a track rather than dicing with death on a motorway containing unknown hazards.

Ski Ned,

My car MY95 WRX, with Piper-X induction, full decat, and DIY 16.5psi remap (just). Remap raises boots, maps fuel and air, retards ignition appropriately, controls boos and spool up - also raised rev limites by 1K at my request. Only fitted on Friday, so not full tested under all conditions, but so much fun so far. Cost??? £82.50.

My engine was rebuilt by TSL only 30K ago (and just had ist 30K service), so I am sure it was safe to go for the remap. Acceleration is smoother, less dramatic, but boy do you feel moementum build quickly. My car used to pull strongly in 4th (with UK box) to 128mph @ the red line - now it hits 130 and seems to have plenty in it... still in fourth, though I doubt I'll over rev it too much. 5th is much stronger too, just keeps pulling!

Don't seem to need full throttle to accelerate very quickly, part throttle is plenty. Overall, extremely pleased and will be testing it further when I can throughout the week. One slight glitch, which can be rectified if I can be bothered - is a fuel cut problem at full throttle in 5th @ 80mph. Easily cured by part throttle accleration (still quick) up to 90mph and increasing to full throttle as you reach and pass 100mph.

Mail me for contact details of the remaper if you're interested.

Cheers,

Kev

Oh no, you don't need to be worried in the almighty Scoob, no mere 1.8T VAG unit could ever be as quick as one in a straight line or even more so round the twisties. Honest.
