Running costs? Skyline GTR R33 vs EVO VI vs M3 E36 vs Carrera 993
#1
Hi Jay
Got an E36 M3 now and to be honest insurance is the biggest killer (I am 21 though)!!!! Apart from that the usual fuel bill (bout £20-£30 a week) and servicing. As soon as you mention to a main dealer M3 they go ring a bell and quadruple all the prices!!!

If you use specialists then servicing for the 993 will be fairly cheap.
Add to that they only need servicing every year too.
www.jzmachtech.comhave fixed price serving for all Porsches.

The servicing costs on an Evo 6 are not expensive as everyone always says. I have had 5 services on mine at a Mitsi dealer and only one has been over 200 quid, most are just lubrication services and are about 130 quid. The 4k service interval was mainly for the AYC fluid change but AFAIK Mitsi are going to change this to longer intervals.

An E36 M3 will cost about £140 for an oil service and £300 for an inspection 1 or 2.

I'd agree with ajm. Even when I had an E36 325i the servicing was alot more than previously mentioned. If you also wanted to rectify all the things that they found wrong with the car in an Inspection 1 or 2 then the price could run into the 1000's. On one inspection 2 I had done they reccomended that I change the front seat frames as they were creaking which would have meant they would have had to rip the front seats out, replace the whole assembly for the front seats and then put the seats back in at a cost of about £900 in total. And this was from a reputable BMW main dealer.
I fixed the squeak with a £5 can of WD40. In my years of car ownership I have never had a service quote which has cost the standard price but this applies to all cars. I reckon all the cars mentioned are gonna cost pretty much the same in running costs i.e. high. It's the price you pay for running a performance car so just factor that into your budget and you should be ok.

Skylines -
Well as an R33 GTR owner who has done over 12k since July (and prior to that owned a jap spec scooby). Servicing for me is Cheaper than the scooby was (eg Rod Bell Motorsport charge £30/hour, 12k service is c2.5hours +£50 fluids - not at all pricey, HITEC and Abbey are both excellent value too - much cheaper than Middlehurst). My car is running about 400bhp used daily for a 88mile round journey - probably a silly thing to do, but until I get a second car I enjoy this is
I get 20-25mpg unless I'm really silly, and to be honest it returns better MPG than the scooby did (honestly!), but I did have a low geared scooby and do like cruising at significant speed!
For comparison - Spudgun on this BBS got better MPG from his 550bhp GTR than his 380bhp Evo.
Insurance costs me about £50 more than the scooby, and too be honest most of the Japenese Cars cost about the same.

Anyone know the order of most expensive to least expensive with regards to running these cars taking everything into account, except the buying bit...
Thanks for any help.
Edited to say that I'm not talking dealer servicing and parts costs, just specialists.

How about this:
R33GTR - Expensive to service and fuel, but what a great car. Had a V-Spec and it was great. Unfortunately it's engine failed not long after I sold it. That was lucky for me, but a £6k hit for the poor chap that bought it. This was with full Middlehurst history every 6k miles. There was not 1 service that was "standard price" and the cheapest bill was nearly £400. That's every 6k miles remember. Insurance was just over a grand and it averaged about 17 mpg.
Evo6 is an awesome tool. I drove an Evo6 RS Sprint at the Ring and it rocked. However, service intervals are at 4k miles and with AYC fluid changes etc, it's about £250 each time. Fuel tank is tiny and has crap range. Also it's stupidly thirsty like the Scooby. Insurance is laughable and you'll need a pet Rottweiler that doesn't mind sleeping in cars! LOL
An E36 M3 will cost about £140 for an oil service and £300 for an inspection 1 or 2. It goes Oil Service, Inspection 1, Oil Service, Inspection 2, Oil Service etc etc. Of course, pads, disks, etc are all above these standard costs. Great car, but again pretty thirsty. Fairly common though, and would rather have ......
the 993! They need servicing every 6k or so, and cost about £200 a go. Tend to be fairl heavy on disks and pads, but they have superb brakes, so I guess it's to be expected. Build quality is great and it'd get my money over the others.
Above all, remember that a specialist is invariably cheaper, and quite often they have ex-factory trained technicians. There are several for all the marques mentioned above. Would be worth doing your homework as this can decrease costs. At least it would with the BMW and the Porsche. The Skyline really needs a specialist who'll invaraibly charge near dealer rates.
Remember that they will all cost about the same to insure. The Porsche is undoubtedly the best bet as a second-hand buy, and it's probably going to be my next motor. Either that or a 355!
