Merc 500 SL?

Point taken about the comparison - I guess it was just the Porsche that came to mind at the time and the convertible link, as I wasn't sure (still not) if they ever made a convertible 928? Also, I didn't realise how big and heavy those SL's are and having just checked have I see they are over 1900 Kg's... and I thought Skylines were heavy!

Anyone had or been in one of these? You can get a good early 90's one for less than 15k (seems like good value to me considering how much they cost new). A great cheaper alternative to a Porsche Carrera or are they just too 'soft' to be a great drive?

Great car, built like a tank, glacial depreciation (£60k car still worth £15k after 10-11 years ) but not a sports car, more relaxed GT, but with 300-360bhp (depending on year) they're not slow. Was/is a more relxed alternative to a 911.
Put new wheels, and later spec lights on though and they look like a £60k motor

I may be biased but where/when can a 500sl be compared to a 911 Carrera ? The 500SL is a great car - but as a GT - a 928 would be its most obvious competitor from Porsche......
The 911 is a different car altogether !
