What makes me laugh is plonkers like Saxo boy who have never been in a 400 brake car waffling rubbish about his silly little saxo and 200 hp subaru. How can twits like this make an objective comparison they can't. I have driven many scoobs and am thinking long and hard about an evo but not that impressed it was gutless in comparison and the costs involved to get some decent power were astronomical sorry they just don't get near the fun of my saff
<fish mode on>

Hmmmmm, that looks like a tasty worm...but what's that sharp looking metal thing!! Oh, it'll be all right I'll have a bite

</fish mode off>

I can make an objective comparison against my car (270ish bhp) and 99% of the rest of the cars on the road - given that only about 1% have anywhere near 400bhp. The fastest car I've been in is Andy F's RA and we've already established its there or there abouts the same as yours down the 1/4 mile, probably even faster. The bottom line is there aren't many cars out there that have over 400hp and even less with over 600, etc so I'm unlikly to be troubled by them.

Even if I could safely and cheaply tune my Subaru to 4-600bhp I probably wouldn't as I need it as an every day car and need reliability, comfort and driveability also. I get enough looks as it is when I turn up on site to peoples homes in a decat scooby I'd shudder to think the noise, smells and impact it would have if I tried to weave through suburban estates with mega power under the bonnet.

You need to accept it cossie that not everyone wants to go at the speed of sound in their cars. If I had the money I'd probably offer to buy your car off you as a weekend play thing or track car but if you offered me a straight swap I'd tell you where to stick it.

Hope I managed to pick the bait without alerting our fishing friend

some quotes from autocar

'a car that redefines the way we must think about and judge the hot hatch back'

'every bit as significant as the 205 gti and golf gti were in their day '

' the RS is a landmark car '

Autocar sponserd by ford ? Either way its compelled me to test drive one to see what the fuss is about. Does anyone who has ACTUALLY DRIVEN one agree.

Face it the common consensus is that the RS Focus is ALOT BETTER than the scooby and bear in mind its a FWD think how the 4wd Cosworth is going to compare. The scooby is so out of date now time to ditch the underpowered tinpot jap sheds most scooby dealers are doing the same so why should a customer be any different. The writing is on the wall. SCOOBY RIP

I was looking forward to Autocar's 'complete road test' of the Focus. Was treated to 1.5pages of drivel instead.
Comparing the limited production run Focus with the 205 and VW is silly. Limited production cars do not redefine anything.
and 3 guesses as to why it is limited - Ford loosing shedloads on everyone sold by any chance?
And ffs, how long has it taken to come out?

Still waiting to see a full and balanced roadtest.

At least the Cosworth Focus should still look good in a few years, Ford are starting on a decent platform this time, not the ***** Sierra!

I am not a Ford fan by a long way but I have to say the Focus RS is nice, and the Cosworth version should be the daddie - if it ever see's the light of day!!

There's not going to be a Cosworth powered Focus 4x4 in it's current incarnation as the chassis can't cope with 4wd.

Years away, so let's not panic !

there is most definitely going to be a cosworth focus. When the current focus is updated the new floor pan will accept 4wd as standard.
The RS Focus is a full production car and better than a scooby in every department. It will not devalue like a mass production subaru and retain far more cred as a result.Still I would think a 1.6 focus does that anyway let alone an RS model
Sour grapes on the scooby owners behalf you lot must get really fed up with being in the 3rd division all the time strange how you and your cars are the butt of every other communities jokes don't hear anyone laughing at evo's but subaru' well that is another matter a very amusing one.

"Face it the common consensus is that the RS Focus is ALOT BETTER than the scooby and bear in mind its a FWD think how the 4wd Cosworth is going to compare"

From what I have read, Co55ie, the common consensus is that the RS is better in some areas (on track, smooth tarmac) and not as good in other areas (bumpy, wet roads etc). With that in mind, people can decide how it suits them, based on the type of driving they normally do. I love the look of the car and wanted to buy one. Even put down a deposit. Unfortunately Ford were unable to give me such basic information as insurance group, servicing costs/intervals, even purchase price, so I gave up waiting and bought an RB5 instead. I dont regret it for one moment as the RB5 is quite a lot faster than the WRX which the RS is being compared to.

As for the Cosworth Focus, yes it should wipe the floor with the current crop of Impreza models, but it is at least 2 years away and I'm sure even you dont expect Subaru to sit back on their laurels for that time. Whether the Cosworth ever sees the light of day is probably dependent on the success of the RS. I for one hope it is a huge success. I have long been a fan of the RS models and was very disappointed in the late 90s when the marque appeared to have been binned for good.

Co55ie - I dont own a Subaru so my view is impartial here.

I post on a fair few boards and I have to say that general opinion is that the motoring fans I talk with like the Scooby, there is a mutual respect between performance car owners, something you wouldnt know about. When I see a Scooby or have a rag with one I more than often get a thumbs up or a flash of the lights when we part company, again, probably something you wouldnt know about, although the 18yr old idiots in thier Escort RS Turbo's must think your god?

In my social circle we have a fair collection of exotica and sports cars, and there are about 8 of us who are car mad, Iam sure if I asked them they would all laugh at the Sierra, regardless of how kick **** it is!. Your inability to spot irony is superb, your saying that people find Scooby owners a laughing stock, and you drive a Sierra - your hilarious - thanks for cheering me up today!!

Ask the nation over 17 what car they would choose between your Sierra and a Scooby, I would put money on it that only an extremely small number would choose the Ford, and they would all be RS owners club members. I suppose your going to give it "well that shows how many Scoobs there are on the roads" - well, yes, but there are not many Seirras for a reason - they are sh1te!

Have a good day mate, your entertainment value is 2nd to none.

I'm sure Ford are replacing the Focus in the nest couple of years. So if Ford do bring out another cosworth (which I hope they do) I cna't see it being a Focus. Judging by how long the RS focus has taken hit the road. Which was supposed to be the 1st October (now)and there aint be many delivered.

Grovesy - I havnt missed the point mate, you have!!

My earlier post was about the Focus, I was taking issue with the star that is co551e, I wasnt slating the Escort RS, I was pointing out co55ie's flaws in his post, so what - if I want to do that I have to email him??

Its a discussion forum, thats what I was doing!

And for the sake of it I had a Regal Cavalier GSI when I was 19, does that count?, it only had about 185bhp. Chill mate, dont take things so personally! - I wouldnt get upset if you called all 18yr old Vauxhall owners *****, we all were back then!!

The Focus is to be revised in (I think) 2004. It will still be called the Focus and will probably be recognisable as such but as stated above, the floorplan will be designed to accomodate 4WD, which the current car cannot do. I really hope the Cosworth version does appear, and I am sure it will (eventually!)

Whatever people now think of the Escort Cosworth, it was (and still is) a fantastic car which earnt Ford considerable respect. It was killed off primarily by the escalating insurance costs, which meant that in the end Ford really struggled to sell the cars. As people now accept that these types of car cost a fortune to insure there is a good market again.

Lets face it, if it wasnt for the original Sierra Cosworth, and its success as a road car, would Subaru and Mitsubishi be so keen to have developed our current models?

(I realize that last comment could provoke another of Co55ie's slightly anti-subaru outbursts, but I am sure he is too mature to rise to the bait!!!)

Looks like its not getting replaced, "RB5320" seems to have alot more info on it than me.

And I totaly agree with that the old Sierra Cosworth "PROBABLY" got the ball rolling for Scoobies and evo's.

Tom M if Sierra cosworths are such a joke and have such a bad image then how comes they cost so much to buy secondhand ?. Alot more than a scooby. Strange that a 15 year old 500 costs the same as a nearly new P1 both ltd edition models
I also find your comments strange because they wipe the floor with scoobies performance wise. Awful subaru flat 4 ( snigger at it this under engineered pile of junk ) compared to the YB dream on.
Tom ask any engine builder which car is mechanically superior you will allways get the same answer and listen to them trying not to snigger when you mention the subaru flat four its a joke.

Co55ie -

I was pointing out that most other performance car communities do not laugh at Scooby drivers at all, I mentioned nothing about perfomance etc etc. Iam not disputing that the Cosworth name is a good one, we all know what they can do, Iam just saying that todays generation prefers the Subarau over the 15 year old Saphire!

I like Cosworths as much as the next person, I just dont like the Saphire, the 500 was an iconic car and still looks kind of cool in a retro sense today but the Saphire just look, well, err, like a taxi, a cheap taxi at that. Sorry mate, I just dont like Saphire Cosworths, if I did I would log onto thier website to talk about them!!

I know you love you car matey, that much is obvious and against some belief I actually do rate your knowedlge as you obviously know a thing or two about cars/tuning, but Iam only saying that there is much more respect from performance car drivers to Scooby owners than there is Saphire owners, in my experience.

How many 500 Sierra "Whale Tale" Cosworths were made?, were they all in Moonstone?? - these arnt testing questions, Iam genuinly interested to know.
