New WRX priced EVO VIII with 230bhp due out - About time ??
#1
I like the VII more than the Evo VI, the VII looks a lot better in the flesh. I saw one on the M1 today, looks pretty good close up and not to boy racy, but still mean. The stats are amazing for the price.
If you like Max Power the VI is for you, not good if your over 35.
If Evo VIII is 230 bhp and Mit. change the service for 45000k to anything over 7500k I would have to consider it, then chip it to over 300bhp, oh yes.

This will put the cat amongst the pigeons...
Anyone seen this weeks Auto Express ? They say that Mitsubishi plan to launch an entry level EVO VIII with 230bhp for around £22,000.
Must admit, I've always wondered why its taken them so long to tap into this sector of the market.
Hopefully they will have sorted the service interval times out for the new model... surely it won't need serviceing every 4.5k miles like the others !?!
Seems there's plenty on offer for around this price now with the Audi S3 Quattro for around £24k, the Focus RS for £20k, the Alfa 156GTA for around £24k and the new Scoob for £22k.
What would you go for ?

Jerry,
Rumour has it that the AYC servicing intervals are going to be extended to somewhere closer to 12,000 miles. Should make Evo ownership even less painful on the wallet. Any idea on how they are restricting it to 230bhp?

the official ccc cars will be detuned but they wont be around till 2004. Also, there will be an official upgrade to unleash more power.
Import cars to arrive early 2003 though will have the full 300bhp and with 6 speed box allow 160mph + and 0-100 in arodun 10.5 secs

Apparently they are only considering releasing the car because new Euro emission laws have now meant that Mitsubishi will have to kill off the Galant VR4.
It seems to be their way of bridging the gap between the everyday models and the full-spec Evo VII.
AE go on to say that Mitsubishi's European bosses met to discuss the viability of the 'budget' Evo at the Paris Motor Show. Apparently they believe that the only way they can get the Evo VIII passed for European roads is to cut the emissions by dropping the power. Once approved the engine can be chipped and tuned as much as is needed.
They are said to be planning an entry level model at £22k with around 230bhp available, a 285bhp model with a Ralliart upgrade priced at just under £30k, and a monster 325bhp silly thing priced at about £32k.
All looks pretty good to me... mind you, Evos could soon be as common as muck like Scoobs !!?

ChrisB,
The new Mazda 6 MPS looks pretty nice !!
280bhp,4WD,full traction control and 2.3 litres all looks fantastic..just maybe needs a bigger rear spoiler.
Can't wait to see the full stats on it.
The Alfa 147 GTA looks pretty mad... 3.2 litre V6 wedged into that thing !? How fast is that going to be ?
Mind you, surely it'll be really nose-heavy ?? Surely it'll understeer like a b@st@rd !?!
I'm still not convinced by Alfa's reliability record either...
Maybe all this competition will put more pressure on Subaru to sort out car interiors, after-sales etc..
All good fun though !

Good point about the AYC servicing intervals. Even if it is only 22k it will put people off if its much dearer to run than cars that are barely any slower (e.g. WRX or even the Focus RS, Leon Cupra R etc...) even if it does handle better.
On the plus side I bet aftermarket tuners will be able to get the power up a fair bit cheaper than the official Mitsubishi/Ralliart power packs, especially if its been artificially restricted in the first place.

I have seen pictures of the Evo VIII and it looks like a pile of sh** IMO. I think it was in Autocar but it looks big, lardy and blobby. Things have gone downhill since the Evo 6. All IMHO of course

Wonder if they'll sort the teaspoon-sized fuel tank and tooth-rattling ride out and the rear spoiler that wobbles like silly at anything over 50 mph too ?
Looks have gone downhill.. but so have most motors...
Everyone seems to want a overly-curvy "new-millennium" type shape for everything... daft IMO !!
