How many other cars have you driven???
Minis may be fun, in good weather, sort of, but
They are uncomfortable
The suspension is crap on bumpy roads, and here they are all bumpy
The prices for tuning stuff is crazy considering its been around for a million years.
The gearboxes are crap
Then engine I dont mind actually
The heater is crap
The windows steam up
They are noisy
They are small
The wipers are crap
The lights are crap ( as standard, buy halogens they make such a difference )
There is virtually no protection in the case of an accident. ( Ive wrote 2 off, in quite spectacular style though, and walked away from both!! figure that, but I'd hate to get hit by another car.
AND THEY RUST!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE RUST!!!!!!!!! I HATE WELDING RUSTY CARS!!!!!!!!!!!! and mine is getting rusty.
Still, I'll never sell my mini Had it for 10 years now

It was 1340 ( or somewhere thereabouts, I dont really care what size it was, it wasnt fast enough ), remember, it was over 10 years ago I had that engine in the car. I wouldnt bother wasting money ever again, tuning a normally aspirated engine. Its all paying big bucks, for so little gain. Every car should be turbocharged.

I think a fair few people would be very interested to read about this little beasty, judging by the long post down the page a bit

Stick some 175/50/13 tyres on it, Yoko A539 are about the best, and it'll go in a straight line and corner a lot better..

There's a new tyre size that came out recently, but I'm yet to see any on a Mini, or even read reports on their performance, and that size is 195/45/13. Would involve cutting the front arches about a bit, and you'd probably need some wheels with quite an offset on them to clean radius arms and other such bits at the back. What wheels do you run?

No mate, put some Dunlop 165/70 x 10s on and smoke em in every gear! Much more fun.

I was told years back that the pirelli 175/50/13s were actually a lot wider than a 175 in truth, never bought any though as I liked the A008s. Anybody tried them? Not that it matters as my mini has long since gone

PS A Guy I know is selling a clubman with the vauxhall 2litre turbo in, he wants £7K for it :O A lot of cash for a mini.

Would the £7000 Clubman be blue with white 14" Speedlines?

Tens are great, but you'll need a disc size of less than 7.9"s to fit under them, and four pot callipers bearing in mind the power. A lot of moneys worth.

Pirelli in the sizes available for Minis are crap. Stick to Yokohama

So what's the spec, I wanna see, wahhh

My mate Matt would kill me if I didn't oput up this link to his site:

www.miniwilliams.co.uk

Metro turbo engined job! Mental fun!

I also had the privilege of riding round the Nurburgring in a Honda VTEC powered job, and this guy could drive! He lives about three miles from the Ring, and is a complete loon. We were blitzing, and I mean blitzing everything!

His site is here:

The ringmini vid is excellent. Some years ago, I used 175/50 A008's on my 1000cc mini and thought they were great. Many years later, using them on my turbo mini, I am not impressed. The 165/60x13 Good year NCT2's I had been using felt much better, and there wasnt much difference in grip, but feel is so much better.
I have the yokos at the minute, and the car feels very unstable for some reason. At speed, the back end feels very light, and although it is ok, it doesnt inspire confidence the way the NCT's did.
Minis do handle, but not when they have too much power. They become very dangerous.
Just to add, my best quarter mile time is 14.5@101 mph, at Santa Pod, back in 94, using the 165/60x13 NCT2's Still in 3rd gear crossing the line, in a full weight road car, including a lot of luggage.
I did a 14.6 @ 96 in the summer of 94, at the first Mini showdown at Santapod. 3rd fastest car overall, and fastest turbo mini by far, again fully loaded with tools and luggage. Wheelspin is the problem, with getting a good time, as there is pretty much uncontrollable wheelspin til close to 80mph ( all the way through 2nd gear ) on a grippy dry surface. Wheelspin in every gear in the wet, so no point in trying.
There are other minis claiming 200bhp, but when they had their cars featured in mags, They had short diffs, their times wre still slower than mine, and their top speeds were pathetic at around 110mph. Mine will pull 7500rpm in 4th, using 13's and a 3.1:1 diff. Cool I really should have a roll cage in it.
All the better considering its using a std crank/rods/ and metro turbo pistons.

Stevie,

I met you at Santa Pod at the first mini showdown, I was there with a mate of mine with his Mk1 mini turbo. at the time, his car was metallic blue with 13 inch minilites and a 2.9 diff. I think his best that day was a 15.1 on 13psi boost. He did the first race of the day against a V8 powered mini van - and won! 2 Weeks later he did Ultimate Fast Car, and ran a 14.7 with 17psi boost on 10 inch wheels.

My own mini used the stock crank / rods etc, but I used the Omega forged pistons (broke 2 sets, I still have one knackered set in the garage I think to remind me). It took a couple of attempts at building the engine to get everything spot on and reliable, but once it was right I did over 20K miles on it. Gearboxes lasted anything from a few days to a few months. The car was rolling roaded at 116BHP on 9psi, and 160BHP on 16psi before I added the intercooler and had the head done. I never had it rollered again after that, but I ran a 14.1 qtr mile @ 103 mph in that spec on a 3.2 diff and 13s. I did one of the action days at castle combe, probably about 96 or 97, and the only car that was faster that day was the spaceframe Vauxhall twin cam engined job.

I then bought a GTM and put the engine in that, but it was lethal and I lost interest when things kept breaking. On the only run I ever did at the pod, I lost 3rd gear on the strip, and ran a 15.1, but the 60ft time was 0.5 secs faster than the mini, so 13s would be possible. I've sold everything off now, it was too much of a money pit

My mini was actually one of my more reliable modified cars. My first turbo engine ran for about 40,000 miles. Gearboxes are the weak spot, breaking gears, and diffs, and casings. The engine in the car at the minute still uses the original met turbo pistons, with 6mm removed from the top, to reduce the CR. Never broke one yet, just melted one from the old engine. Current engine has loads of miles on it, as it was second hand when I bought it, I just replaced the head with mine, and bearings etc. Running 1.5 bar, with R5 intercooler, and water/meth injection, Head, cam rockers, big turb, modified SU id guess it has a reasonable bit of power. Torque is excellent though. I have put many a supposedly fast car to shame. DIY rules, never been on a rolling road.
Mine would def go faster if I could get some grip, but was only ever at Santa Pod twice to try. I havent really driven it for about 5 years now, just come out the odd time to race people for a laugh. I just realized that minis are crap and moved on to bigger better things. Still good fun though.

I did tell???
1293 using stock turbo bottom end, incl pistons, with 6mm removed to lower CR to 7.5:1 ( Piston crown still remains intact )
Swiftune head
Swiftune SW5 camshaft ( previously used a MG metro camshaft which is also very good. ) DO NOT try and use wild cams, as they do not gain anything, and lose everything in driveabiltiy. I tried a 286 once, which N/A is v good, but on the turbo it was completely crap, losing all driveability below 4000, and gaining only 1000rpm up top, which was totally unneccessary. Both the cams I mention work brilliantly.
1.5 ratio rockers
Hybrid T3 turbo, 0.36 ex housing, with 0.42 A/R 2wd cossie compressor wheel
ERA mini turbo airbox with K+N filter in pass side under wing.
Alloy renault 5 intercooler
DIY water/methanol injection
Stainless exhaust ( maxiflow i think?? cant remember, but 2" dia )
1 3/4" SU modified with larger fuel bowl, larger needle valve ( weber one modified to fit ) Larger 0.125" needle in jet drilled out to suit, heavier spring ( 9oz I think )
running 1.5 bar boost, torwue down low is excellent, easily pulling from below 1500rpm in 4th using 3.1:1 diff, with 13's
Boost picks up after 3000, with full boost available around 4000, pulling very hard til over 7000.
Crane PS91 ignition coil with Magnecor leads
Welded dizzy giving approx 28deg BTDC all the time
A+ Tran-X straight cut gearset, standard drop gears, and Tran-X X-Pin diff, non LSD.
I have broke 2nd gear before on the tran x, and broke the old withy engineering X-pin diff. The TranX diff is a much superior product than the withy engineering one.
Gear casings also break on the centre web, and have had to replace 4 or 5 so far, although none have actually broken, just cracked.
Clutch is a STD verto unit, with an AP paddle plate. While I say standard, standard seems to be a very wide range of covers. I have tried about 3 new turbo covers, and several normal 1000cc covers, and this is the only one I have that grips. Ironic that it only cost me about £50 one time on a previous engine it was just a re-con clutch kit. All the others slipped at even 8psi, let alone 20psi.
Ive came across a few covers that I would think are strong enough, but most are crap. The new turbo clutches I bought, werent even balanced properly when I fitted them to the engine, vibrating like mad.

Think that covers most things????
I know its messy, but I dont care...lol

Nice looking conversion that, deffo not the tidiest thing I've seen but its results that matter, and anyone who's ever done the turbo conversion will know how messy it gets
Just found out that Matt (miniwilliams) got 201bhp at the dyno day today.

Ta Stevie, sounds like a quick motor

Interesting point you made about the cam, I have a friend with a turbo Clubman, that will 'only' be running about 105bhp at 8psi, with a 2.7FD, it pulls very well considering it's only running 3psi til it's set up and the fact that it has a tall final drive, but I have no idea what cam he is running, maybe standard. The 286 is probably about as wild as you'd want to go on the road, with N/A, I prefer the 276 personally. SW5 would be pretty tame on N/A, as would the MG Metro cam, but both would pull very well from low down.
