911 the next step up ? maintenance
#1
I've been thinking about a scooby for a while - but in truth just can't face the looks (no hate mail please)A the points on my livense means something a bit less obvious to the old bill might be a wise move. I've been thinking about an S2000, which i've driven & I thought it was a bit wobbly at the rear & a VX220 better than an elise to drive, but still noisy & no fat mates or family will make it over the sills + i've got to drive it all year round (anybody out their doing that? if so let me know) So I figured maybe an old 911 c2/c4 circa 93 ish. MY main question is..has anyone got the faintest idea how much of a budget you need to run an old 911 (outside of insurance & tyres)HELP
Thanks G

The 964 model ran from 1990 to 1994 and they are not known as the most reliable version!
Even if you get a good one you are looking at £500+ bills for regular services and top end rebuilds are common anywhere from 50-100k miles at around £5k.
Clutches are also a weak point and are £1k+.
I looked into this a while back but decided that I really wanted a 993 model but couldn't afford that so I bought an Evo VI instead.
Cheers,
Phil

I looked into this for a long time before deciding to get another scooby. Took advice from several sources and was basically told to stay well clear of the 964 model as servicing costs are horrendous, which is why you can get a 964 for the same price as the earlier 3.2 Carrera. If you can stretch to the 993 model running costs are much lower, but inital buying cost much higher (although depreciation is minimal).
If you want a 911 that is sensible to maintain, go for the 3.2 Carrera, late 80's. Fuel economy not bad, servicing costs comparable to most GTI type cars, and almost zero depreciation. But as an everyday car? Not for me. Alternatively if you have a spare £30k, get a 993.
This is only my findings and others may disagree. Check out www.911virgin.com for more info.

I owned an F reg 3.2 Carrera in 1996, made from 83-89. Not that quick but not slow obviously, reckon your Scoob would deffo keep with it, kill it off the mark. But extremely well built and reliable. It hd 86k and felt tight .
Be prepared though for possible vandal damage and snide remarks from jealous barstewards .
I wouldn't own one again but like the look of 993s.

I bought a 10 year old 964 RS 2 years ago and have done about 15000 miles in it. It is the first 911 I've owned.
It has been fairly expensive to run, needing a new clutch, new driveshafts, and just recently a gearbox stripdown to replace broken clutch plates in the LSD. However it is is used very hard on tracks most weekends of the year. If it was used as a road car I don't think any of this would have been required.
The total running costs over 2 years have been about 5k GBP, which is about how much the car has appreciated in value over that time. :-)
I would highly recommend one of these cars. The driving experience is in a different league to an Evo/Impreza. More challenging, but more rewarding. The 964 had rear suspension revisions that make it easier to drive than the 3.2 cars (and the 993 was revised again making it easier than the 964). They take time to get used to, but you will be converted. :-)

A pal recently bought a mint 993 soft-top. Beautiful car, 20k miles, Turbo wheels and a Porsche supplied sport-exhaust - all for £29k I would have been VERY tempted.
In 6 month he has already had a £3k bill (service and brakes) and has been advised to put aside £3k per 12,000 miles to cover consumable and servicing!
That being said, in 2 years, with 44,000 miles it will still probably be worth c£25k, so even with £3k per year and £4k depreciation, it will cost him £10k. My scooby cost more than that in depreciation alone in 16 months!!

Thanks all of you for your help - I've just seen the new scooby look in EVO this month - it even vaguely attractive - maybe even enough to tempt me. I think i've been frightened off the 911 - Just can't stretch to the maintenance bills - so i've got 6-8 weeks to decide S2000, Vx220 or the facelifted scooby--or I could even wait for the vx220 turbo in march....If I could stomach riding a moped all winter!

Honestly 911's aren't that expensive to run - if they go bang then sure you need a specialist but is £35 per hour really that much more than a usual main dealer ? (OK so AFN are over £70 now!)
They are suprememly reliable if you get a good one, with regular servicing and no rust. 964 is the black sheep but even then it's hardly bad. Remember this is from the same guy who designed tanks - he knew a thing or two about rugged. And as the ratio of 911's built to those still on the road is so high - you know they are reliable (and yes they do appreciate).
Mines over 30 years old and, touch wood, still goes like a train. Worth £20k just for that engine note on the overrun. Regularly see them with way over 100k on the clock and still tramping along happily. Main thing to be aware of are dodgy UK dealers (buy in Europe) and all the 'oh yeah I used to have one of those, 8 litre turbo it was, 2000bhp blah blah blah' you get at every petrol station.
VX220 turbo should be fun but depreciation on a Vauxhall ? Everyone should own a 911 at least once in there lives!

Agreed, but a pre '89 or 993 for me (or a 2002 996 if you are offering!)
Cheers,
Phil

Why not try a E36 EVO M3 ?
Pretty good build quality plenty good ones around £15-£20k.
Servicing pretty reasonable and lots of BMW specialist garages around and specialist insurance.
321bhp, Quicker than virtually all Scubarus (including modded) over 70mph+, even now an old M3 EVO will give a new 996 porsche a run for its money, 12.3 seconds 0-100 and should be able to take on an UK STI 0-60 and whip it to 0-100 and above.
Non modified M3 Evos aren't too noticable, particularly if you debadge.
BMW M3 Coupe
Horsepower DIN 321
Cylinder/Valves Inline-6 24V
Displacement ccm 3201
Weight (Empty) 1544 kg
0-62 mp/h 5.5 s
0-100 mp/h 12.3 s
It is restricted to 155mph, but people have had standard cars a lot quicker by having the restricter removed 170mph.

And if you get a bad one it'll cost £5k immediately and be a pig to sell!
Full inspection vital.
You pay when you buy a 911 or you pay when you run it
Cheers,
Phil
