Cheap fun required...

Ok, suggestions? Getting rid of the scoob, mostly due to cashflow. issues. Do about 25k a year, mechanically handy, so not averse to something a little older / over 100k miles.. that way I'll service it myself, rack on the miles, and to hell with the residuals.
Even considering a TDi hatch, but
Looking to spend as little as possible, deffo < 3k.

I think I can answer your prayers.
UK Celica GT4 - Its a bit older (1990), its done over 100K miles (112K I think), suit someone mechanically handy, and its comfortably under £3K.
I'll even hold it for you till the weekend. (the car!!)

Definitely look at a Daihatsu Charade GTti. You'd be able to get a good one for 2K and mod it to about 160bhp for another £700 and at that stage it will be quicker than your Scoob. Just add downpipe, ITG induction kit, bleed valve, dump valve and fuel cut defender.
I was so impressed after being driven in one I've bought one myself now !
As standard it will do well over 40 mpg.

Stephenuk300, thanks, but I'm rather anti modded cars, it tends to have a worse effect on the insurance than buying a faster standard car.
mancamefirst - tried to email you, didn't work - want to drop me an email?
Otherwise, what do peeps think about old skool 200sx's - I have to admit I rather like the looks...

No problem Mark,
All the original parts come with the car anyway. Wheels, chip, springs, grill, filter and connection. Everything can be put back to original spec.
This will be cheap to run and insure (group 12) and the passive rear wheel steer, makes for excellent handling.
Just let me know if you are interested.

Any problems with old 200SX's should be highlighted here:-

Mine lasted 150,000 miles before the big end went without any other major problems. You will be dissapointed with the fuel economy though. Averages about 26 mpg.

Depends how much 'fun' you are after and how cheap you want to be.
Most of the cars suggested are still going to cost a fair bit in insurance, maintenance (higher wear etc).
If you are being sensible, then an old 306 D-Turbo is probably the best bet. Quick-ish (Golf GTi quick), great chassis, still looks good (had the S16/XSi kit & wheels), virtually bomb-proof, will run forever and will give 5-600 miles per tank. It was about the first diesel hot hatch and good examples will come well under £3k.
Problem with old, tuned cars are that at 100k+, things do go wrong. Oil burners run and run and run....

Mark,
Took this a while ago when I was selling my GTi to verify the mileage to the buyer. MPG shown on the computer was average over 1200+ miles, not just a run up the road.
Then again, I do drive like a girl.

A legacy turbo can be bought for around £3000, and is every bit as good, if not better than an impreza. Most impreza bits bolt straight on too, and they are very reliable. Crap seats though.
As for the Celica GT4...Sorry, no way. They are not for some DIY mechanic type, as they are a nightmare to work at. I have worked at quite a few of them in the past, and now just point blank refuse to, for any amount of money. They just arent worth the hassle. They give cooling system problems, usually ending up in head gasket failure. Clutches are a nightmare to change, as are head gaskets. Everything on these cars is Awkward ( note the capital A )
Failing a subaru, a 325i is always good fun albeit thirsty. The Golf GTI is an excellent all rounder, and very economical. Can be bought for well under 3K
