Renault 5 turbo, feeling unwell.

Hello, can anyone help,
My mate has just bought an R5 turbo with a blown engine, he put a new engine in which he has heard running and knows is ok.
The problem is as follows,
1st gear, cane it, dump valve on gear change, all fine
2nd gear cane it 3,500 rpm dump valve comes in engine drops to 1000rpm, then 3rd gear 3,500 rpm same again...
what is the problem is it just cos its a renault or is it something simple.
help...

sounds like the dump valve spring isn't strong enough or some kind of problem with it, have u tried taking it off and running without it, i've had 2 of these before always problems though
