Your not wrong, at least the ones that I have had all had issues, and big ones too.

I had a P38 V8, piston liner slipped and that was the end of that.

I got another V8, head gasket went. I got this one sorted at a cost of over £2k, and then guess what happens about 2 months later, yep, piston liner slipped on that one too.

But when they work, they are awesome, at least the P38 V8 was like driving a sofa!

I am looking for a winter car at the moment as I dont want to use the Type R when the roads are full of salt and huge puddles!

Might consider an old Defender!

Had a 2001 Disco 2 from new and it was brilliant. Never went wrong.

Had a Range Rover sport new in 2005. Went to Sandwich in Kent during a winter gale....and it sulked. Went into limp mode 'cos it was cold (bless). Land Rover told me it was because the grease in the air suspension connections was wrong Who knows....so I sold it.

Wish I had kept the Disco...

Have had a Range Rover and a Land Rover, both with absolutely pathetic build quality, constant issues, constant failures!

Sadly Jag goes into the same group for me.........

always been a fan of LR products

but like everyone - they are brittle for such supposedly "tough" machines

had the same V8 Liner and HG problems,

a friends broke down on him a year ot two ago, and he had simply had enough of it (a really nice late X reg P38 in dark blue with a cream leather interior)- and he simply got the AA to tow the thing to me, I wanted to fix it - but realised after a couple of days that it was a HG

so I drained the petrol out (about £100 worth) and sold it for scrap - I think for £100

my brother had a Disco series 2 - it developed a fault that he later found out was so common it had it own internet meme - "the three amigos"

he actually fixed that though - dodgy connections on the ABS/Suspension

about 10 years ago I moved to the Toyota Landcruiser - now that is one fvcking tough truck

lol, I would still prob have another one though

At least with the old Buick V8 you could get a engine machinist to mill out the old liner and press in a new one for a reasonable cost. My mate used to obtain scrap/warranty engines from the dealers and that's exactly what he did...replace the dropped liner then throw it on eBay. A Porous block though was the end of the road...hence why so many are now on eBay as coffee tables or wine racks.

These days it takes as much time to do a EGR(s) on TDV8 than it does to do a head gasket on a p38. And the turbos, just look where they are and ask what do you do If one fails?. Then theres oil pump casing cracking. Manifolds splitting...this all just the engine.

Got a Sport with active anti-roll? Better check those ARBs-if they leak (and they do) it's not like dropping one off a Scoob...its case of lifting the body off the chassis enough to get clearance...but whilst you are there you better change the steel pipes... I've had to replace them on a 4yr old Sport from corrosion...they burst, lost the hydraulic oil and the driver carried on driving and seized the pump.

My advice if you want one...buy new /nearly new. Sell before warranty expires.

There's a reason why you see so many L320s on backstreet dealer forecourts for less than £15k ( or even less than £10k)....

The major problem with Ford-onwards era Land Rovers (and Jags to some extent) is it appears zero thought has gone into how to fix or maintain it once it's built.

Anyone who has drained the oil out of a TDV8 "sprinkler system" will under stand...what idiot put the sump plug next to the chassis leg? They Could drill and tap a hole anywhere on the sump, but they put it where it sprays oil everywhere when the sump plug is removed...why do that? That's just draining the oil...and that's after you tried to remove the seized bolts from the steel under tray that are screwed into nasty quality fixings in the chassis legs which then shear off and spin. Or the filter on a freelander2/evoque oh come on!! .why did they put it there...its a PSA engine yet even Peugeot saw enough sense to put the filter where you can access it easily with plenty of room to swing a socket/spanner...Land Rover on the other hand must have been on a mission to **** off its dealership workshop staff by putting it in the most awkward place with no clearance and requiring a special spanner to undo it (Special = shortened and bent with Oxy-Acetylene ).

So yeah I'm a bit fed up with dealing with them.

Imagine trying to fix one in Africa, miles from anywhere

For comparison my wife said to me once, a few years ago when the Landcruiser came back from the garage

"The car does not feel right, it seems slow and sluggish"

Well, that was surprising because a, it is not a quick car, and b, my wife is a very good driver but not a particularly quick one (she can parallel park that car in spaces most men would not even attempt)

So it must have been really noticeable

Anyway I said OK I will drive it to work and see

Well it was obvious it had a problem - so at lunch I walked out to the office car park and had a look,

It became pretty clear that the issue was the pipe from the inter cooler to the turbo was not connected properly

I was able to fix it, with only a screwdriver and still wearing a suit in about 10 mins

Exactly...but I do like the way they drive (Tdv8 or supercharged) the interior comfort, the space inside, proper seats both in the front and rear (so many luxury cars these days have crap rear seats...VAG+BMW especially). They did so much right on these.

To own though...never.

And to off-road or even use it on muddy lanes, you'd have to be mad.

For the past five weeks my sister has been driving a Disco sport, what she should be driving is her Evoque, sadly LR are struggling to rectify a steering/suspension fault, enough said..........

Such a shame to hear about the Evoque (and other RRs). I'm sure there's no straight answer but I need to ask...why are they unable to built a car properly?

So you are saying they choose to build it like that? Dress it up like a polished turd and then drop their customers who have spent considerable money right in it?

I dont think its the way they make it, I think its some of the components that are used. Like electrical components that are bought in bulk from the cheapest manufacturer.... Im sure I saw Italian made sensors.

So its more the bits that they dont make, but JLR UK doesnt give a crap about individuals!! They think that the "image" sells there cars and until people start taking their business elsewhere, they wont change.

I guess that's what it comes down to. A shame because the Evoque is a lovely looking car and I'm told drives really well too.

No. Despite my sisters car spending more time in Stratstones than i'd be prepared to put up with she's going to get another LR car, probably back to an RRS this time though.
I've only owned one LR car, an RRS which like most was plagued by suspension bush failings, something that LR still doesn't appear to have sorted.....

Having just been to and back the Le Mans 24 hr in a RRS V6 Turbo Diesel I must admit my thoughts on LR products have changed. It was a bit like driving a couch though

The drive down was effortless and even at 140+on the French toll roads the thing was epic and we even managed 37 MPG for most of the journey. The sat nav was sh*te but that was on the only down side.

We even met up with an F-Pace and F-Type at the services in France to compare notes. The F-Pace is pretty nice and shares much of the RRS gubbins and seems just as well built but was a nicer place to be in.

Maintainence as been covered by Ali, so I'll shut up.

Converted, probably not as my lifestyle does not need one.
