Default Golf r

Hey all

Started to look at the Golf R's , has anyone driven one, what's your opinion.

Can't be asked with the wait anymore of finding a Scooby / Evo.

I have and it's a lovely car.
The dsg box is awesome and it's very well equipped.
They look a little dull though.
They seen to get stolen a lot but at least you won't look a tool driving one like you do in 20 years old tech and a silly spoiler.

That's the thing with the r it's fast but nice inside.
The impreza is just a fast skip with an 80s interior

I think it's the Pretoria that's the alloys that suit the r the best.

I drove one but not my cup of tea but it's a very good all round everyday car unlike the impreza that can only do two things I. E. Go fast and look a chav.

I said something similar in the line to sign on at racing.

"I don't need to wash it all anyone will ever see is the back bumper"

People laughed at me....

I've had one for 7 months.

Fabulous little car, with a few mods can be 340hp atw
Faster than my Sti IV, Sti VII, Evo VI and e93 M3, not much keeps up with it at least in a straight line.

Resonator delete and flaps mod give you something that also sounds rude, not V8,V6,V5 but acceptable.

Dan.

Would you say it actually feels like a awd car or mainly fwd until the feels it needs to distribute power to the rear wheels.

Off the line, awd.
Pushing around a sweeping corner, it feels very fwd, and then loads up and you feel the weight shift as some of the power is directed to the rears.
It's not bad around the corners Not Evo balancing.

Haven't been a position where I've had to plant it and let it sort out a hairy corner situation, it's never got to that point...yet.

Did you try driving it in anger with the stability control turned off? I find it tends to make the Haldex equipped cars more rear biased when driving hard. With it switched on it will always understeer no matter what and will restrict full power through bends (traction light NOT flashing!). Turn it off however and you can correct under steer by giving it more power with your right foot ....not tried that on the R, but it works on the R32 and later S3 etc.

And of course you can always swap the Haldex Ecu, I almost did until I found turning off the ESP was enough improvement for me

Drove a stock one and thought the brakes were crap,
Then drove the same car after it was mapped to 360/380 bhp by APR

Fast car, DSG great for traffic lights GP.

My Sti has K-Sports tho so i may be spoiled,

However after the map the stock golf R brakes were frightening.

Expected a lot more from the braking and handling,

I drove it like i stole it both times and it felt FWD when pushing on.

Sure i had ESP off too.

It was faster yes,

That was the only mod tho,

I felt it made the brakes feel even worse as you were now going faster,

I honestly expected more,

Only thing it does better than a my Sti is comfort and fuel economy.

Considering it's over a decade newer than my car I didn't find it that impressive

That's the thing though, it's difficult to find a car that offer's everything in one. I was thinking in road use it would be ok, I would only start to notice the handling problems when I take it to a track which not sure if I would do.

It looks like a nice all rounder for a daily driver in stock form.

Agree there, in stock form as a daily it has to be one of the best all round packages,

But, for me it doesn't score high enough on the feel and drama departments but what new car in 2016 really does ???

Or are we just getting old

In a world of Hybrids F1 and Electric Cars,

I don't think we will see anything like the days of Sti,Evo,Skyline,Rx7 etc.

Now it's all the same 2.0 turbo dsg stuff which in stock form are still pretty quick but nowhere near as much fun.

I think this is down to fitting all the modern technology people require in a new car.

If you don't nobody buys it like the my16 impreza.

Probably why a lot of people have a daily and an impreza for the weekends. That's what I did.

Yep to appeal to a wider market need to have all the extras or no one gives it a second look. I will go as far as to say even a GTR gets boring after a few days, its epically fast but again does not excite (defo getting old)
