Surely unless you do big miles a diesel is pointless.
The pd engined vag is very peaky but the cr one is very smooth

I found that diesels ONLY shine on the motorway. urban driving there no better than petrols, they stink, they have more problems, sound **** & go ****.

Something like a 535 i wouldnt mind though.

My Dad use to have a old mk3 astra diesel, back in the day, that did 40-50mpg. It was an ok car boring to drive but good on fuel. Built proof Isuzu engine.

I've never owned a diesel, hate them.

Had one of them years ago great reliable engine but gutless lol never bought another derv until i bought the vrs and ended up with a load of tuning parts off a friend when he put his car back to standard, totally changed the way i think about performance diesels now, wont have one with a dpf though too much trouble.

I have a diesel as the daily hack as I do around 18k a year in the daily. It goes well for what it is and returns around 45mpg.

On a previous service I had one of these new 1.4 eco petrol engine Focus' as the curtesy car. For a laugh I tried to get maximum fuel economy for the day, to see how good it was.

I was amazed it returned about the same mpg, however, to do that you needed to drive like Miss Daisy and it was utterly gutless. Diesel wins for me in that comparison, as it has plenty of torque and accelerates with ease. I also don't have to drive like a pensioner to return decent mpg. Ha

Been knocking round in a Seat Altea for the past couple of days ; identical chassis to my Golf, just FWD and longer wheelbase. Roughly the same weight...

To work (urban stop-start)...48mpg from cold....Golf...umm 28mpg driving like miss daisy (I usually do 22mpg when I drive normally)

Guess which runs on petrol LOL

I don't care though as it's still better Mpg than my old Impreza

Oh and Loz; word of advice. Don't replace your troublesome diesel with DIRECT injected petrol. As you'll be Jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Stick to INDIRECT injected petrols.

A mate of mine had a 535d and custom mapped made 395bhp, side by side on the straights I was only just pulling away with 470bhp in my scoob, was a very quick car.
We went to Silverstone in it and at 110mph it changed into 7th gear 2000rpm it said 28mpg on the screen

More than happy with my mk4 golf tdi 150 mapped to 180ish, goes ok in traffic situations and averages around 30-35mpg on my work run of 7 miles

If you bought a diesel as a performance car you failed.
Most people myself included use them as a daily hack as running costs are cheap.

I had a pd engined vag and then moved to a cr diesel this is streets ahead of the pd with linear power delivery

I've got a VAG common-rail diesel with 168bhp and it's OK as an everyday proposition. The power delivery does begin to grate after a while and it's lacking in the performance department. For an everyday car, I think I'd rather get a VAG TSi next with 220+bhp and suffer worse fuel economy for greater performance, more tuning options and much improved power delivery.

Conversely i'm having a hoot in my new 31yr old golf 1.6 td. I like the way it pulls up the many hills around here, there are lots of tight bends and a lot of the roads aren't very wide so you can't go tearing around blind up hill bends.
With the subaru that means 2nd @ around 2k rpm which equals zero go or screaming in 1st, the golf just has the torque to pull me around and up without any drama, once around the bend there is no waiting for turbo to pick up, I just press the gas, up to 3rd and she's flying, well not quite, but on these roads I'm able to move as quickly and quicker in some situations with less effort and less stick stirring.

I put 20 quid in it on sunday when I picked it up which put it just over half full, drove it the 50 or so miles back home and been hooning in it all week and it's sill got over a qtr of a tank I'd have used most of a tank doing the same in the scoob, which I've not driven once since I got the golf.

And I had it up to 130 very briefly, ok ok it was only KPH not mph, but it felt really fast.

I get around 31mpg mixed driving and 45+ on motorways in my 530d.

Definitely not a performance car as such, but had to chuckle at the WRX (with PPP I believe) who came tearing up behind me a few weeks back, think he realised he should have bought the STi.
