Default Clio 172/182

I know a few lads on here have had Clio sports and was wondering if could give me an idea on what spec they have?

As far as i'm aware the Clio cup has a handling pack over the standard version, but does it loose some extra's?

And what about the Trophy model?

Any help would be appreciated

I used to have a Cup.

IIRC the suspension is the same as the Sport, however it does not have a number of "luxury" items and is therefore lighter and quicker.

Seats are basic, rear seat is thin foam. Apparently they managed to make it 85Kg lighter than the regular car. Many don't have AC. No spare wheel etc.

Fantastic car that was super cheap to buy new at the time 2002.

If you have the cash Trophy is the one to go for, but make sure the fancy dampers are in good condition as i expect they will be pricey to replace.

I had a 182 Full Fat for about 6 months. It was OK, but ultimatly not quick enough. Weird driving position aswell and because the door windows are very large, makes you feel exposed. Im not sure I would buy another

Hmmm, interesting, cheers for info.

The cups seem to go for more, to be honest i like my creature comforts, although not that fused with air con. Was only planning on getting one for 6 months, just to have a try.

Might go for what you had, so basically full fat means all the toys?

Brief run through:

172 - Aircon, ABS, sport suspension Leather/alcantara, etc
172 cup - No A/C, no ABS, Cup suspension, wider track, cloth seats, lightened 89kg, speedline turini wheels.
182 FF - Same as 172 but in 182 form.
182 Cup - Same as 182FF but with leather seats and with cup suspension and wider track.
182 Trophy - Same as 182 FF but with Recaro seats, Sachs suspension and Turini Wheels in Anthracite.

FF means toys and weight. For road use go FF and if for the track go 172 Cup.

I have 1 turbo'd 172 cup that is caged etc but had it for 12 years now so I've had it in many guises.

Also, most folks with trophy's actually go for something else suspension wise as the Sachs are expensive to maintain.

Does command the highest price though out of all the models.

I had a Trophy for 6 years. It's basically a 182 Cup ie, not FF so doesn't have xenons, normal air con instead of climate, Cup interior but with Recaro Trendline seats, Speedline Turini wheels and of course the Sachs dampers. Great little car and never let me down in my years of ownership, the mechanicals are solid and robust and dampers do need refurbing every few years depending on how you drive the car and keep the car. Yes the driving position takes a little while to get used to, but seriously all that gets forgotten when you chuck it down your favorite back road, seriously quick and nimble little thing once up to speed and will keep up with most things on a typical B road. The handling and the grunty engine is the best thing about this car and it is the last of the back to basics raw hot hatch.

Nice one, it will be a second car, so thinking might just go for the standard 182, not looking for anything to fancy as not keeping long term. Just miss having a decent hot hatch.

Main problem I have with them is the size, proper girly car really. Cockpit feels so cramped for a bloke.

I still view 182s with the utmost respect when I see them; there's just something rather special about them that's lost in the newer versions.

Not much difference in the 172/182 and cup models.

172 cup is the best for a pure toy.

The cup have 'cup' suspension a bit firmer. Most 172/182 non cup owners go for cup shocks with cooksport springs for best handling.
And the seats are just plain (non leather edge trim)
Along with other minor differences.
182 has the twin pipe with no spare wheel.

The trophy is the top model with Sachs suspension (expensive if the break as above) different trophy spoiler.
Recaro seats etc. the most expensive one out of the lot.
Tbh the trophy is normally kept standard for its rareness.

Depends what you plan to use it for.

Full fat is just the extra kit on the plain 172/182 with all the extras

Didnt the 182 cup have an option of the trophy rear spoiler and front splitter aswell?

OP bizarre that you've posted this as im in the same position. Ive just changed jobs and dont need my car daily so was going for something smaller but still wanted something that was decent to drive.

I've spent a couple of weeks looking at them and missed a 182 cup that was for sale less than a mile from my front door. Good luck with the search.

I',m just planning on using for road use, daily driving, shops cinema, general driving around.
I was going to just get a 1.2 corsa but i've decided it would do my head in.

So i'm sticking to a decent performance as close to 200bhp as pos. I thought about a VXR corsa but i then decided against as i don't really want something that i'm going to worry bout it getting scratched or nicked.

Hence why Clio ticks all the boxes, nippy small hatch back, good mpg, nothing i'm fussed about if it gets damaged.

Or other option i just stuff it and buy another Impreza like WRX

The 172 non cup will be the cheapest to get and then add a few taste mods.
182 aswell if you like the looks of twin pipe, if I were you I'd look for a cup that has all the stuff on inc suspension, spoiler etc or even a full fat model.

Belive it or not, I bought a mot failure on crack in windscreen, bald tyres and rear lamp damaged for £500.
A few mods later and sold it for £1700.

Find one on cliosport.net that's been looked after and slightly modded.
Engine mounts are prone to failing, and make sure it's had timing belt done as their a pain todo and specialists charge a easy £500

Do not use anyone other than a recognised Renaultsport specialist for cambelts on the 172/82. A lot of "normal" garages don't understand the correct procedure for setting the timing, and there's many stories out there of mistimed engines. Also, change the dephaser at the same time as its a cambelt off job again to replace if it fails a few months after a belt change.

I owned a 172 for nearly two years and its still my favourite car I've owned to this day.

OP, three things you need to know;

1. do NOT buy a non-Cup packed car....full fat is a bit heavier but Cup chassis is worlds better than non-Cup.
2. check it is a genuine Cup; Lots of small differences that cost a fortune to replicate, easiest way (other than a number plate check at a dealer) is to measure the distance between the bolts where the strut is attached to the hub. 50mm non-Cup 60mm Cup.
3. join cliosport.net, pay the membership and check the buyers guide.

I've had both, currently on an RB 55 plate Full Fat with both Cup packs and its lots of fun

a Cup optioned 1*2 has a far better chassis, steering and general feedback than a scoob. I've driven a shed load of big power classics (and own one)...speak to Frayz for feedback from a 182 and high power newage owner

570bhp Impreza = quite fun.
Standard 182 with cup packs and track rubber = most fun you can have with your clothes on!

Two cup options for 182;

Chassis; so all the good bits and the one you want.
styling; anthracite rims, splitter and Cup spoiler...the Trophy spoiler is a V6 variant and larger than the Cup and Sport options. Only available on Trophy and v6.

I've only owned my impreza for a month so can't comment fully, but the 172 still holds the crown currently lol.

Which company?

Probably, as if I had mine now, I wouldn't mind it, I'd just go out and thrash it.
But wanted another toy to spend some time on. I just need something to play with, wether it's working or not lol.
Havnt you got anything to toy with atm?

Interesting, I can see why, years ago I had a corsa sport 1.6, which I bought in mint condition, it was the worst handling car I've ever owned, but once I changed alloys and lowered it etc It went to the best handling car I've ever owned. You touch the white line in the centre off the road and it would grip and just pull you along.

That would have been running 150bhp if I had not crashed it. With 132bhp extra plus better handling it should be fun
