Default BMW 1 series

My 330 clubsport is in for a few bits under warranty and they have lent me a 116d auto.

I have to say once you get past the slightly awkward looks and plasticky interior it really is a a nice car.

That eight speed gearbox is an absolute peach and whilst it's obviously a bit underpowered, it uses everyone of its 115bhp very well.

Handling is also great with a smooth ride but still sporty enough.

Only the light steering at low speeds and lack of side support on the seats lets it down.

Having recently driven a new Golf, I am amazed how much of a better package the Beemer is.

Assuming it caries over the best bits, the M135 must be outstanding

One thing I forgot to mention was the fuel economy - or lack of..

Computer was reset when I got it and is currently showing 40.2mpg - i do drive with a heavy foot (hey it's a courtesy car) but doing the same routes in my 330 (probably at a faster pace ) and it will easily average 30mpg - not a massive difference when you consider fuel prices, DPF's etc.

Sounds odd; the 116d should be great on fuel.

I can get mid 30s in ours on a long run.

odd, the 318d I'm tanking about in at its worst has managed 46mpg (short trips - city traffic ).

Its probably broken

Have had a 120i as a loaner in the past. I liked it. Unlike this 318d I'm driving.

I just swapped the Mrs 116 on an 08 for newer golf gtd, I put some 18 inch wheels on and I cannot believe how much better it is than the 1 series in every single way. In all honesty I think the 1 series is a proper piece of crap.

My car did have a corrosion issue on one rear arch, it was down to a poor previous repair. This has now been sorted by a local bodyshop and so is rust free.

How is the new one better? the old one had a **** lifeless drive, a **** interior, no space in the back, crap slow engines with poor MPG. If the new interior is as bad as the new 5 series then that will be pretty awful.
These are comments from a guy who usually has 2 or 3 BMW'S on the drive.

Why so angry about them?
Your experience is a base model old version. Have you even say in a new F20 version?
Rave reviews across the board; boot is bigger than a Golfs, great new engines (we can get close to 40mpg from our 320bhp 1 series which isn't slow...), decent interior with the best infotainment system, etc.

It's like basing an opinion of the mk7 Golf R on a mk4 SDI..,

Nice. The late E46s came with a 12 year corrosion warranty which BMW will honour if the car has FSH.

,
1. My experience is based on more than a single 1 series.

2 I am angry as I have owned a ridiculous number of BMW'S and still have an E60 m5 and an x5 and the 1 series felt like they basically molded a pile of **** into car shape, and assumed they could sell it as it had a Bmw badge.

Strange that it's (the current one) won so many awards and group tests then isn't it?
They must all be so wrong?

The new 1 series may or may not be a good car but that makes no difference to how much I dislike it and most of other the other new BmW's. It's like the reinvented mini, i hate them but after a blast in my friends cooper s works they do drive ok. There is just somthing that makes me feel shame for humanity everytime I see 1. I am not sure if it's more the car, the people who drive them or they way they release cars for specific demographics that annoys me.

Blimey, you've got it bad.
Well ours is a bloody awesome little car that embarrasses all but the latest full fat M cars while seating four people and a boot of shopping.

Plenty feel total rage against the X5 you know. But if you feel that your completely ridiculous rant is necessary, do carry on.

I've not driven an older 1 series, but the latest one is miles ahead of the latest golf IMO.

Are you taking it personally that I don't like your car? Don't be upset it's just a car. As for four adults in comfort don't be silly, unless you are 4 midgets it's clearly small and cramped in the back . I don't see a 135 embarrassing an e60 m5, but I guess now you are just offended that I think your car is an ugly depressing piece of crap and making stuff up. The only review I have seen comparing the new a3, golf, 1 series and A class had the 1 series in third place. But personally I wouldn't have any of them but for a woman to cart baby seats kids around etc the golf is a much better choice than a 1 series. The other benefit of a golf is that if I drive it it's still enjoyable and don't have to suffer looking like a **** who borrowed his 19 year old daughters car.

Okay, you're just being a childish muppet.
I shall ignore your pathetic rants from now on. I suspect it's more some lame attempt at upsetting me rather than a meaningful rant.

M135i; Five stars in Evo, Autocar, What Car, Auto Express. Lapped the TG track way quicker than your creaky old shonky gearbox Dame Edna lookalike barge. You are clearly a five star pillock.

Happy frothing you bitter old troll.

I had an 06 120D Sport.

Better in pretty much every respect than any comparably engined golf I've ever driven (apart from rear space). Of any age, to be honest. And the new 1 series is a significant step up.

This is what I tried (on about an 09 or 10 plate); it went well, was chuckable and quite fun. Wasn't sure about the "flock wallpaper" seats and door cards but otherwise fine.

Ours is tight in the back (I said it seats four; I didn't say four ADULTS in comfort...) but the boot is actually bigger than a mk7 Golf (we've had three as loan cars), it retains a proper handbrake rather than a stupid eletronic one, it has A pillars that don't block half the road and plenty more shove than a bloody Golf sodding R - even ardent owners and fans are moaning about the lack of mid range shove (bhp is 25bhp less but likely to be a wider deficit, torque is VERY much less and comes in a lot later).

However whatever other cars are out there, to have SUCH contempt for a model known as being very good, just smacks of lame trolling.

I guess we should stop feeding that troll....

I mean why is the R56 Mini physically larger than a Citroen C1, yet have less space inside and a almost useless boot...the C1 manages to have equally useable shaped boot and still have space for a spare tyre!! Obviously the new model helps address the issues new mummies had when they realised alot of pushchairs won't fit and complain on mumsnet about their "small car" being too small (wimmin) But in doing so the F56 looks like someone's attached a footpump to the exhaust and inflated it.

But, engineering/quality wise they are mechanically quite solid cars and not too bad to work on either. Especially when compared to anything small from PSA or Renault (Except the door handles). They take ALOT of abuse from a demographic that usually treats cars like a throwaway appliance, and they hold together far far better than the competition.

Just wish they'd quit calling the newer/uglier/bigger models Mini and name them for what they really are...MAXI !!!! Calling an obese car a Mini is just not right. Bit like some of the descriptions on POF, not that I frequent POF

I had a go in an M135i in my new car hunt - I really hate the looks of the 1 series but due to the good reviews and quite liking a new diesel one I had as a hire car I thought I would see what all the fuss was about.

It is a very nice place to sit, decent MPG, definitely fast, but utterly UTTERLY boring to drive and of course ugly as sin. I did however prefer it to the new WRX STI that I drove on the same day.

A shame you left it in Eco Pro mode...

I've heard all sorts of views but none have called it boring. That's not the same car I bought a year ago; it's bloody exciting when pushed.

I suspect you'll end up with an Audi.

Most cars are bloody exciting when pushed - 90% of the time you are just driving them normally and that is what counts for driving enjoyment.

By all means enjoy your 1 series though, each to their own and all that. Even though it is really boring.
