STi Cosworth 400
Are these engines likely to be as chocolatey as the 'normal' ones?
Quite like the idea of running one for a few years.
Obviously been out of the Impreza side of things for many years, so don't really know much about them.
Any pointers would be useful, cheers.

Being a Cosworth edition car I would imagine the internals are forged. I highly doubt Cosworth would want the bad rep of engine failures, so I'm guessing they are properly sorted. TheNewGalaxy has one and I'm fairly sure this question was asked before, and he said the same. Could be wrong tho

No issues with the engine on mine. Pulls like a train and never caused me a problem.
I can't see how one of these cars would have suffered a traditional 2.5 HG failure as they benefit from uprated head gaskets and studs.
The only potential issue I can see is problems running high boost through the 2.5 block but the Cosworth 2.5 runs at low boost. Cosworth pistons are known to crack at high power applications but the Cosworth engine in general runs pretty conservatively in all areas.
I don't know of any failures, I've heard this rumour of one further up North but noone is able to tell me who it belonged to or what happened.

Didn't Evo stick a Focus RS500 against the STI Cosworth, and the STI won?
Both on handling, and I'm sure it was pretty close on acceleration too.

If so, no - never had neighbours called that.
Wrt the Cs400 - I'm parking that idea now.
Just been offered good money for the Spyder and I'm in negotiations over a rather nice Exige V6.
Fingers crossed.

Why would it blow up? These engines have been used for years by the Americans and have an excellent reputation for reliability, hence the reason Cosworth decided to use it for the project and put their name to the car.
Both excellent but overpriced cars, there is a sizeable performance gap between them in favour of the Cosworth. The RS is a rawer experience and is a more involving experience at lower speeds though.

Yeah they're pretty quick. Easily the quickest out of the box Impreza I've ever driven. 0-60mph is around 4.5 seconds and 0-100mph is around 10 seconds. Looking forward to custom mapping mine when the warranty runs out there's a lot more to come from these cars imo.
Seeing as our much more humble M135i has been "officially" timed at 4.6 to 60 and 10.9 to 100 - much less power, similar weight, no 4WD.
Zip - now that is a VERY nice car indeed. I think I'd be nervous running a Lotus though.

Me too - 320bhp, RWD, 4.6 to 60. 10.9 to 100. It appears that most that have been on a dyno are seeing 340+bhp and 350-360ft-lbs though which is quite a bit above BMW's numbers,

I suspect it is very capable of it in the right hands but personally find the Cosworth quite difficult to get off the line sharply, certainly compared to my S202 which weighs in about 170Kg lighter.
However in the mid range the Cosworth is epic, and it pulls from around 30 to 100mph very easily indeed.

Skulks off to find 0 to 100 time.
A very un- impressive 14.1 to 100.
30 to 70 is 5.1
And a very average qtr mile of 13.7
It's all about the mid range though.
I feel the need for more power.

Fastest laps have 10.9s to 100 for mine.
Autocar got 4.6s to 60 (done before launch control came out which I have). Fastest Laps says 4.5s.
It was also a bit of a giant killer on the Top Gear track; 1.25.1 beating all sorts of properly hot kit.

The 1/4 seems to be about 13s.
Not bad for a wee shopping hatch ;-)

regarding warranty it was 3 years and i've just bought a Subaru 1 year extension for £499 for mine - reckon its worth it for peace of mind, yes there are some exclusions, but the main costs are taken care of.

Think I'm going to take the risk and map her though. I can't see how the engine in these things is going to cause problems especially if mapped and maintained properly. Will be looking at using Andy Forrest or Andy Carr.
It was only a short while ago I was discussing with JGM whether or not I should go Syvecs or Ecutek, what a pleasant chap. RIP.

Owning a standard RS MK2 I have no doubts that the CS400 would destroy the RS500 on bumpy british roads - even more so if damp or wet.

most of us did not pay 50K, and know they are still going for well over 30k, so i'm not so unhappy. still love the car, especially with the recent seat modifications!, just need to find a solution to the crazy price Cosworth want for some new brake discs...
