What is a supercar and what is a sports car?
So having watched a vid on youtube (/DRIVE)
on this question (plus for SN what is a GT car) I thought I would give it a go myself and see what SN thinks.
Hypercars/Supercars
La Ferrari
918
P1
Enzo
Veyron
Aventador
F40
F50
Huayra
Zonda
Sports cars
458
911 Turbo
LFA
GT3
GT-R
Huracan
12 C/650 S
R8
GT cars
SL AMG's
DB9
F12
599
There are cheaper sports cars and cheaper GT cars but the cars that I have mentioned are all high end and IMO are in a bit of grey area (some more than others)

IMO, they're terms created to impress people that usually will never own them.
Some of the modern "GT" cars have performance in excess of last decade's Supercars. Is an R8 a Sports car? What's the V10+?? What about the 911 and 911 Turbo?
I can even remember an Evo III lapping the Top Gear Track in a similar time to a Murceliago. One's a rice rocket, the other is a "Supercar".

Top bracket should be hypercars, 2nd bracket should be super cars, then a 3rd bracket for sports cars with scoobs evos etc and then a bracket all in its own for ford fans who thinks their blue ovals is the best cars that can ever exist ever ever

It would seem that Nissan may have a different idea
What Nissan say about the GT-R
In 2014, its revolutionary Twin Turbo V6 will produce an earth-shaking 550ps. GT-R is a lot more than muscle though: it is the ultra-modern supercar, an unmatched blend of technology, innovation, and soul.
What Nissan say about the GT-R Nismo
2015 GT-R® NISMO®
Lock up your sportscars, the GT-R NISMO® is on the loose. The supercar already took fastest volume production at Germany’s Nurburgring track. Watch as the 2015 GT-R NISMO® keeps breaking records and breaking hearts.

The thing that defines a supercar is performance. The things that define a sports car are not.
Best example I have is my MR2 roadster. Frustratingly slow to me (I'm going to put a Celica 190 engine in it eventually) but a true sports car it is. It's raw, it's involving and it has exceptional handling.
A sports car is about a pure driving experience. Performance isn't a defining factor of that

They're all terms designed to promote discussion, leading to "mine's bigger than yours" arguments down the pub and the occasional slap/punch/fight from those who've had too much to drink and/or have had a crappy couple of days and don't need the derision when their arguments are dismantled.
In short it's a bloke thing.
