Default Engine scrap in a Evo 6, which replacement engine?

Hello, a friend of mine was very unlucky yesterday after half a lap at the trackday we went to, it ended up with a 200 meter oil trail on the track, some bearings and rod parts on the track and a big hole in the block of the engine behind the turbo. It is a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6 from 1999 that is in very good condition and before it happend there was no sign of anything wrong, oil changed and level checked as you should do etc. Its pretty much standard to, just 3" exhaust system, intake filter and a Blitz boost controller at around 1.1 bar.

I dont know much about these engines or cars but i want to help him out as much as i can, i have heard that the evo 9 engines can drop into a evo 6 without to much hassle and that they are supposed to be better, is that true? What prices are you looking at for a nice evo 9 engine in england? What breakers are recommended (i know one i wont be using again...), i was thinking japperformanceparts.co.uk although they seem quite expensive when i have asked them for prices on subaru parts.

Ok, Yeah i read up on the evo 9 and they have a mivec head that will require big electrical work to get it working? So Evo 8 is the best bet, are the Evos like Subarus where there are many different versions of enginges from the "same" cars? Like JDM/EDM/USDM versions etc, and are the RS different to the other versions and so on?

Here are some pictures of the mess

The block..

A bit of a piston..

What we found on the track..
