Default Why does a dishwasher use energy when it's off?

As per title.

Been looking at new ones, the energy use in off mode ranges from 0.1kW to 0.45kW...now that last is a HELL of a lot. That would use 11 units a day if left switched on at the mains? Even the 0.1 one is 2.4 units a day.

Yet I was of the opinion that they need to be switched on at the mains to ensure the water valve is closed?

Can anyone explain?
TIA

That is as much as we used to use in a 3 bed detached house before TVs and lighting were efficient, only electric kettle/oven/freezer were juicy. Surely a water solenoid valve can be safe when off and it should use nothing on standby if it has 230V isolation on the main click switch on the front like our 2008 Bosch appears to have.

Not sure about the need for continued supply........... we have a shed load of power cuts here out in the sticks and the dishwasher doesnt suffer any ill effects.

There must be a misunderstanding there, 0.45kW in a confined space is fire starting territory. I'd have expected something closer to 1W.

I have just installed a Smart Meter to monitor the electricity supply into my place. It was free and I was a bit sceptical to be honest and thought it was a British Gas con. It connect to the main line out of the meter into the consumer unit, it's visible so the wi-fi is direct line of sight.

So far the main electricity users are the kettle, washing machine and dishwasher. They all go straight straight to amber when they are switched on. If I have any of them on together it ***** round to red straight away. With just the TV, BT Box and a few low energy lights it's about 1/3 of the way to amber.

The only thing I leave on when I go out is the BT Box, clock radio and phone and they burn a negligable amount on the meter.

Can't find which site it was, but it was DEFINITELY ranging from 0.1kW to 0.45kW when in "off mode".

Even more in standbay.

Turn the main switch off, and you still use electricity...
