Did anyone else watch this ?
I really enjoyed it, the story wasn't something I was familiar with and found it really interesting.

The Admiralty really mucked that up.

I did enjoy the story of the chap with the little trawler.

I missed the first half, but thought the second half was fantastic.

Good story told so well by Clarkson. He's made a couple documentaries like this, and when he's not on Top Gear, he is a brilliant presenter. Same as James May.

Without Iplayer, does anyone know when this (if it is) getting repeated on TV?

and how she ended up

shows how difficult it is to make a decsion when you have only part of the info, imagine if the tirpirz was lurking and he hadn't dispersed the convoy, damed if you do damed if you dont

I have to admit, Clarkson may come across as an utter **** on Top Gear but his War Stories series is fantastic! WWII being a big interest of mine I'm fascinated by these sort of stories and also bewildered at how a man with such poor health was allowed to remain in charge of the Navy during this sort of huge operation!

Some of the people who went through this and are still alive must cringe when they see what modern day politicians have done to this country.

Watched it before Christmas -- very good.

Clarkson did a similar prog a few years ago about Arnhem (a bridge too far) which was excellent.
Turned out his father-in-law (at the time.......!) was an Officer who was involved in the battle, and had never talked about it (to Clarkson)..

The Tirpitz was certainly a threat, although not the one it was viewed as by the old brigade. The shock of losing so many huge capital ships to aircraft (Bismark ultimately for example) still hadn't affected strategic thinking. It took the Royal Navy some time to grasp that the days of the Battleship were over.
The Tirpitz was disabled long before it was finally sunk after a long campaign against it.

PS to the whole convoy story, arriving at Murmansk certainly wasn't the end of it. The Germans bombed them over there as well, sinking ships tied to the dock. Of course the Russians may have been "Allies", but for most who survived the passage it was a bit like finding yourself at the wrong end of the stadium when City are playing United..

very very common, my grandad was a prisoner of war at Auschwitz (pow and concentration camp were different camps at same location) and never spoke about it untill after my gran died a number of years back. What he describes is enough to make you physicly feel sick just hearing about it.
