Speed limit on M1 to 'reduce pollution'
Our beloved government are proposing to introduce a 60mph limit on the M1 between J28 and J35A to 'reduce pollution'!
60mph speed limit proposal for stretch of M1 motorway
So at a time when the police are advocating a rise in the outdated motorway limit the government are looking to reduce it and no doubt bring out some special fines for polluting the planet if you exceed the limit!

I'd prefer it if they just bulldozed the affected areas surrounding the M1. Chesterfield and Sheffield are ****-holes anyway.
I'm not sure how reducing the speed will help anyway, if you go through at 70, your vehicle is there for a shorter time than if you drive though it at 60.

Personally I don't see how it will make that much difference because I would have thought that most of the pollution is created when that stretch of the M1 is at a standstill each morning and each evening, when you'd be lucky to do 30mph. Is the area around Nottingham covered by this, as I would imagine that is a hotbed of nasty anti-eu pollutants? I can’t imagine the M25/M40/M4 area is compliant either?
So yes, whilst it’s our wonderful government, I wish they’d grow some and give a big fat middle finger to the EU, for exactly the same reason that the stakes have been raised in the electricity generating market, with Eggbrough now threating to close down if they don’t get a grant to pay for the conversation to burn wood chippings made from trees cut down in North America and shipped over here. If they close in 2015, that’s 4% of the UK’s generating capacity gone. I wonder who’ll blink first, and are our politicians really that stupid that they’ll continue to follow the EU agenda and allow blackouts to start?

We are basically farting against thunder when it comes to world pollution, if the rest of the world make little effort all our efforts are pointless. Mind you it's a pretty good way to make some extra cash for the government though.

It's fecking ridiculous, this is simply being done in a vain attempt to put people off driving, or to increase revenue from the speeding fines. If this really was for the environment then the limit should be lowered to 30mph or even better just close the M1 so no pollution/noise can occur (as said it would make no difference anyway) As a result all it will do is cause even more jams, EU coonts

Chris Evans was waffling on about this earlier. Obviously he's a petrol head so is very much on the WTF is this about side of things, but did mention that a stretch of the M3 is also up for the same treatment.
It is related to EU ‘guidelines’ due to come in to force later this year.

Reducing the speed limit will hopefully improve traffic flow, which will in turn reduce the amount of stop / start driving in that section. This they are hoping will lead to an improvement in air quality.
They probably got the idea after looking at the M25 widening traffic flow information - 50mph speed limit through multiple continuous miles, enforced by average speed cameras.

60% was a rough guess at what it works out at lol

So it's actually 24% (or was at least in 2008)?
